Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...

How many casual fans do you think have been watching Bleach since episode 1? And let's be honest, how many people would be complaining if Naruto started at Shippuden instead of at the start of the first series?
Point is, if the content is good, people will watch. If people can tune into the upteenth Aizen battle and reliving the Chunin exams, I've no doubt the Davy Back Fight will be captivating on its own merits. If people become interested enough to backtrack, all the better.
Wait what is this in response to? I thought we were well past the whole where-One-Piece-should-start debate, this just seemed to come out of nowhere when we were discussing a promo. I mean I'm still fine discussing it again if anyone wants, but still.
And I'm sure using Funimation.com had nothing to do with wanting people to catch up on more than just One Piece. Because, after all, there's nothing else worth watching, right?
I guess if FUNimation wants to be advertised that's fine, but it sure makes a hell of a lot more sense to put up the "One Piece" specific site if that promo was targeting people who want to watch earlier episodes. They could've advertised both sites.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I just meant that it shouldn't matter if a promo doesn't condense the entire plot and history of the show into a minute. It gave the needed bullet points: returning show about pirates, crazy islands, guns, explosions, when to catch the new eps and where to watch old ones. Most of all, it shows and tells enough so that people who have no clue may at least want to check it out and people who remember it from the old days might give it a second shot.
While I agree with many of firecrouch's points, I have to be honest in saying that Toonami is no longer the gateway for beginner anime viewers that it once was. It's pretty much meant for us old, diehard fans at the end of the day. I'll take a wild guess and say that the crowd that's currently watching Toonami that hasn't seen or heard of One Piece before is very very small.
Hopefully that will change someday if Toonami can expand back into primetime…

The only way for that to happen is for FOX to revoke the airing rights of all their Animated shows. That would probably be enough to influence Adult swim to giving Toonami more time, especially since it has been reported that Toonami has doubled from ratings made about a year ago.
Saturday’s Toonami block premiere episodes of Bleach, Naruto, Soul Eater and Tenchi Muyo! GXP earned mostly double-digit increases across the board vs. the same time period year ago.

Well, considering Adult Swim has just picked up Bob's Burgers, I don't think their relationship with Fox is on the skids. However, I've been hearing rumors that Cartoon Network has new competition for the Family Guy contract (which is up soon) in the form of Comedy Central. If they get it, all bets are off on what Adult Swim will do to stay afloat.
Good promo. Better than the expected: here's a few clips from the show!
Firecrouch is a grumpy bear. I never see a positive post from him. I think the promo gave way more information than is typically seen in promos. People aren't complete idiots. They know to click on 'One Piece' when they go to the toonami site. They didnt need a direct link. FUNimation.com is easier to remember than onepieceofficial.com.
Anywho, it was a pretty fun promo. Would've preferred to see clips from Water 7, but no big deal. So great to see it'll finally be on tv. I wonder how noticeable HD will be.
Yeah…I'm not trying to sound rude Firecrouch, but you really do just sound like you are acting like this because it started at 207 and not episode 1. It was a good promo and told people straight up it was not starting at episode 1 and gave a option on where to find older episodes legally, it also did the job of getting people excited for where it will air. I personally think the series will do just fine in ratings and there is nothing to be worried about.
Jeez what's with all this over-analyzing? I just didn't get excited about the ad as everyone else did, don't paint me like I'm the bad guy. If you really want to know what I thought of the ad just listen to th latest OPP episode, it just went up.
In any case, I was mostly responding to Davis's fears for the casual fans being turned off when the average casual fan most likely hasn't see all 290+ episodes of Bleach and would not be turned off by battles that look cool, even if they have no idea who's fighting.
can you show me how

I sort of agree. I think we should have gotten a general overview of the series a la "luffy. wants to be king of the pirates" ect
just compare this promo to igpx and clearly igpx does a better job of general overview
Hopefully we get an ad that will explain the story a bit next week instead of being stuck with this promo for two weeks.

Because igpx has just as many episodes worth of story to sum up as One Piece.
You guys are being silly. It's a promo. It's fine. Does more than most promos do. They'll have catch up things, as they've stated. Doesn't matter which week they show them.
What good info? It didn't really tell you anything.
Well while they didn't have a whole lot info on the series, I thought that it was important that they stressed the length of the series and that new viewers would be missing the first 200 episodes of One Piece. If I was a new viewer who had never heard of One Piece, I would feel that info would be critical, that's all I was saying.

Here's the problem: You're not a new fan. In fact, you've probably been following the series for quite some time now, compared to new people who are just getting into the series. Someone who goes in, without even knowing what this show is about, needs atleast basic information. There should be an explanation, even if brief, what this series is about, and why you should give it a shot. Not just a generic "Oh, it's long, we're starting 200+ in, here, watch @website, oh by the way, you NEED to watch it", without explanation. That basically sums up the promo, in all honesty, in a nutshell, which is essentially nothing.
And for that matter, why not link to the official website of One Piece, which is www.onepieceofficial.com? Don't give me a bullshit reason that it's "Shorter to remember". People can google it if they can't remember the exact website address. If they want to boost up interest in the series, it would make sense to do it from the website that is hosting first materials for the simulcast/sub/syndicated dub episodes.
Anyways, Firecrouch has every reason to be upset, because honestly? The promo was total crap: through in and through out. There is no reason a new viewer should check this series out based off that promo, because honestly? It gives no information what the series is about. And that's the truth.

Not that they will be turned off, just that they need a little info on where exactly in the story they are. And does Foxy even matter to the story. Just something that says, "It's ok, this isn't going to be plot heavy."
But you do bring up a pretty good point. And Bleach is the harder series to get into.

I agree 100% that they could have had more info, I even mentioned that I hoped they talked more about past arcs in my original post. I also understand the frustration too, One Piece coming back on TV is something we've waited for, for years. It's a fresh start and we don't want to see it F-ed up right out the gate. A lot of people are tense about it. I'm tense about it. I never said anything about the site they chose, but I do agree onepieceofficial would've been better. Anyway, I'm going too try to stay optimistic and hope they do better next week.
Has anybody tweeted to adult swim if there's going to be a general overview promo for the series?
Yeah that promo, while good, could have definitely been way better. They might have another one next week so who knows.
I wonder how noticeable HD will be.
Very noticable. I have the raws for these episodes in HD, and they're leagues better than the FUNi DVD quality.
I can post screenshots later.. maybe.
To be honest the promo wasn't necessarily bad in-and-of-itself, it was edited well, the music was nice, they showed good clips that were hype-worthy. It's just disappointing that they didn't show at least one of those catch-up/orientation pieces last Saturday/Sunday morning. They've got one more week to really promote it and I hope it's good, because I don't think that promo alone was convincing enough.

Great! Man, I cannot wait to see the Water 7 episodes specifically in HD.
I'm going to start watching the Dub from the beginning on Hulu. I havent really seen the dub other than the episodes that were aired on Toonami all those years back lol.
Has anybody tweeted to adult swim if there's going to be a general overview promo for the series?
I wouldn't be surprised if there were. It's amazing that we got a promo 2 weeks ahead of time, and we were told the featurettes were coming, so we may still have a lot more released. The problem is we only have two more weeks where they could air it.
I really hope we see some "arc-centric" promos when Water 7 and Enies Lobby start up…here's hoping!
What I want to see most is arc-centrc featurettes for material preceeding season 4.
Wow. I'm kinda glad I don't browse this part of AP anymore. So much salt.
FUNimation.com just updated their news banner-rotation-thingy with a link to OPOfficial, so now those who watched the Toonami promo can go to FUNimation.com and be linked to the content they need.
!

You should! One of the best dubs I've ever seen!

That would be best next week and the week of the premiere, but we don't really need it until Water 7 starts. No one really needs much background for the Foxy arc.

You need it regardless simply to at least give context to people going into the series fresh. It's not about whether you need background information, but rather something to get people interested to check out the series in the first place.

Agreed… Yet I keep going back.

That looks gorgeous.
I'm pretty sure Toonami might have plans of doing "plot-related/catch-up" promos for OP before it premieres (ala that Bleach one), but y'know, at this point, there's nothing more that can be done. They either have them ready or they don't. Episode 207 is a fun and interesting episode, context be damned. The episodes will be in HD for the 1st time too. The promo said that if one wants to catch up, go online and watch on Funimation.com (or better, people can go and buy the sets). If people are really so anal about truly "needing" context just to enjoy a fun show…then maybe they don't deserve to enjoy the awesomeness of OP until they're willing to be more flexible and take that shovel out their bum. XP I know some feel "context promos" are important, and I respect that it's based on wanting OP to succeed. But even if people know what the show's about (Luffy wants to be Pirate King, etc.), that's no guarantee that people will automatically be drawn to it. Some people just don't like pirates, but they don't know that the ones in OP are not your ordinary pirates. To be honest, I was not drawn to OP at first because pirates didn't interest me (same w/ Skies of Arcadia XD). It wasn't until later on on Toonami that I saw an Alabasta episode (4kids, I know) and saw that these pirates were definitely different from my preconceived notion. Again, this is just me. I do hope OP does well on Toonami, and we can see Water 7/Sea Train/EL in HD on adult swim w/ awesome promos and such. ^^

It's not a "super huge difference" but I can definitely see it. Is that taking the upscale effect into consideration for the DVD, or is that just the DVD quality from a DVD player? Just curious.

Playing it on my computer, so captured it straight from there.

Oh I see, should've guessed. Then I guess it's not upscaled (I suppose). But either way, it'll be nice to see the episodes a bit crisper on TV. ^^

Thanks. They look great. Especially in comparison. Though I wonder if there is that big a difference between the HD and my PS3 upscale. Can't wait to see it.

Wow. I'm kinda glad I don't browse this part of AP anymore. So much salt.
Does that mean same as the last time? Yeah. I was sticking with the DVD discussion, but that cooked down and this repetitive topic started up. We should be talking about the latest voyage! I saw so few opinions when that came out. Wanted to see more.
I'd reccommend the SUB
Also cant wait till they get to Ennies Lobby so epic
Personally, I think their choice of starting points is a smart one.
Picking the point of switch-over to HD means everything is going to look great(those original episodes of One Piece look pretty rrough now).
Plus, it's a short trip from 207 to the Water 7/Enies Lobby arcs. Which are two of the most interesting, exciting, character and world developing arcs in the entire series.
Not to mention, Opening 5 is still probably my favorite one in the series.
Those HD shots really are amazing looking. So sharp and crisp. Can't wait to see it in motion come the 18th.
