I was making this mainly out of the news of the remake (which I saw on G4 during comic-con), but why not make the thread about the movie in general?
I saw this movie on AMC a few months ago mainly cause of my love for the film "Army of Darkness" which has a reference to this movie in it, this quote to be exact:
Klaatu barada nikto
(tho it was pronounced a bit different in AOD due to confusion)
I wasn't expecting much as I don't like old movies, but I was really surprised! I thought it was a great film! I had no idea I'd like it so much. I definitely want to see it again.
Now, onto the 2008 remake. I don't know much about it other than what was shown on G4 and I already don't like it, mainly these two aspects:
1: Klaatu being played by Keanu Reeves. I don't hate Keanu Reeves… he just doesn't match the character to me.
2: The modern approach to it. I realize at the time of the 1951 movie it too took a modern approach, but I like seeing remakes of old films to retain it's time period. But I'm willing to let this slide due to the message the film delivers and that it fits due to how "at war" the world is now.
Ultimately, I don't care to see the remake right now. But definitely want to see the original again.
