That's because Watsuki is one of the greatest mangaka ever. He used a lot of anime cliches quite well (Seta Sojiro is an excellent example). KIshimoto did a poor job with Sai, but he's becoming an interesting character. I really like the way he fights; I hope we get to see his brother in a flashback or something. I bet he uses paper.

Well, I was just thinking of characters who eventually change to become non-emotionless (since that was mentioned earlier). I haven't read all of the Battle Royale manga, but if I remember correctly, he never changed in the novel or movie. So I guess that's why I forgot about him.

Well theres a difference between Kiriyama and Sai and co.
They're emotionless due to trauma and intentional outside effects.

Kiriyama is a complete sociopath due to brain damage.

Yes, I understand. My favorite part regarding Kiriyama in the book is where it mentions how he threw a painting away. Or was it something about mastering a musical instrument really quickly (a violin I think)? I need to read the book again. But it was something like that.

Sai is more the old deadpan emotionless. He didn't really feel joy, he just faked it.

First, I need to clear something up. Sorry if I confused anyone. But by "emotionless" I don't mean literally (except Kiriyama, as Zephos pointed out). I'm talking about the characters who are surpressing their different emotions or whatever. I don't know another way to say it though.

But I disagree about Soujirou. I thought he was only smiling on the outside, not actually being joyful. You know, since when he was a kid the only way to stop being beaten was to "keep on smiling". Although he's always smiling, I doubt he was actually a joyful character. It's just that smiling is the only expression he ever did. So, therefore he was a character who didn't express other emotions until during his fight/talk with Kenshin, where he let his other emotions out (such as his anger/frustration).

Perhaps I misunderstood that part though. Maybe I'll read it again someday and see.

I don't think it was just a smile. Remember how Kenshin couldn't predict anything he did? That's because all he could feel from him was joy. (although some argue it's contentment rather than joy. Take your pick)

That's true that Kenshin couldn't feel anything else from him, but I don't think that means he wasn't holding his other emotions back. Because he did eventually let them out (or at least anger/frustration)…so he must have been surpressing them or something. So therefore, I still think he fits into the "holding back emotions" character type. Which is what I was trying to say about "emotionless characters" but I lack a better term.

Unless he suddenly developed them during the fight somehow.

But still, whatever the case, it doesn't change the fact that Soujiro is an example of the emotionless/expressionless/single-expression character that end up expressing their emotions (or different emotions other than the one they usually express). Just like there are all kinds of "cool guy" characters, there's different kinds of them too. Or at least I have always grouped characters together in that way.

Sojirou was definitely a case of severe emotion suppression. He definitely had the other emotions, but they were so pushed back he couldn't feel them until Kenshin broke him.

once they introduced Tenten's 'ability' then I knew she'd be one of those characters although better writers could have used that for interesting strategic battles (see Jojo's)

Poor Tenten. She could have been a really interesting character but she was just wasted. Team Gai got SO much spotlight time, yet Tenten never did. Sheesh.

It seems to also be fairly common for those type of characters to smile often though (Mr. Grimmer from Monster for example - but his was a fake smile if I remember correctly).

I always refered to Sojiro's emotion as comfort; as that's what they called it in the manga.

Any ideas on what Sai will call Naruto or Yamato? As he's called Sakura hag, I assume he'll nickname his other teamamates.

I just read chapter 311. IT was much better than what people made it out to be. I actually enjoyed it alot to be honest.

Sai looks much better in actual male clothing. And Kakashi is still the sh*t. Sai called Sakura a HAG. That was funny.

The dialogue wasnt that meaningfull but we learn that sai is now part of the team and is starting to learn emotion. This chapter gets a B in my book. I enjoyed it and it made me warm and fuzzy. lol

I really think Sakura IS a hag… I love Sai and I hope he really gets a good role in the Manga.. I just want to see less Sakura

Unfortunately, I think Sakura will continue to get attention. With the way the villians and lead character are going, (e.x. the whole "Sasuke faggin' it up" phase, as well as Naruto crying EVERY STINKING CHAPTER."), the fighting, violence, and having Sakura as a "love interest" for the main character are the only things left to classify this series as Shonen. Pretty soon, you might just be able to slap Shoujo on this series and call it a day.

I agree Dosu had great potential for an interesting character. He had a great character design, potentially interesting development, fascinating abilities, etc… Yet Kishimoto threw him away in a rather frivilous manner....GAH WHAT ARE YOU DOING KISHIMOTO?! I was highly disappointed when he was err "removed" from the story

THEY ARE BACK!!! And they are chasing after some woman, I wonder if she has a bijuu inside of her? They two akutsi members are from villages I have never seen before. The girl they are chasing is from the cloud village.

edit: the pretty boy is from the rain village and the strange looking guy is from the waterfall village. They both have to do with water in someway, so i wonder what type of jutsus they have. I hope she puts up a good fight.

Well it was a ok chapter, but i still hope someone from the Akatsuki will be ugly and not a guy that just came from a catwalk. Until now we have only Kisame the shark dude, i want somebody to look really scary and not a nother guy with a nice smile.

yes, this chapter is really cool! two new akatsuki members, a new female jinchuriki, who is cute and adult. I was thinking about Kakashi using his MS to warp Naruto somewhere beyond time and space to a fast training, but it sounds so dbz to me.

Best chapter in a loooooong time, though I found Kakashi being cut off before describing the training just as annoying as Naruto did.

BEST chapter in I don't know how long. And why? Becuause the side characters were there, of course.

I actually cackled when Sai almost called Chouji a fatty and Chouji had a pre-reaction. Great stuff. Sai is now actually starting to pull his weight as a character. Although this giving people nicknames gag can't last forever.

However I am still disappointed with the revelations about training. It's basically the ole "we will get you ungodly strong in a short period of time!!" ala Bleach. I just hope we get some good shit out of it.

Oh, and it's always good to see new Akatsuki. and the new jinchurikki looks cool. I've been wanting to see the Thunder Ninja in action for ages.

Man chapter was great. Sai x ino?! WTF?! lol. I am glad shikamaru offered to help and what not. I have a feeling that shikamaru on his way back and is going to fight the new guy(s) with that girl with the jinchurikki.

And there were originally 10 Akatsuki before Orochimaru left, right? If we don't count the mysterious leader, then I believe only one more is left. And it must be the kunoichi Kishimoto said was there, since I don't believe either of these guys is female.

It was a good chapter, better than Naruto has been..well, in months…but I have to say two things:
If Kishimoto goes for Naruto x Sakura and Ino x Sai over Naruto x Hinata and Ino x Chouji, than I call that insant failure!
