You didn´t get my point at the slightest. Even though he did it just three times this is so far his character gimmick. If you count down how many times in 373 chapters Zoro has got lost for has fallen asleep I doubt that you will cross the 15 times mark.
And the point that he didn´t freak out when he saved Nami from Aqua Laguna proves nothing. Zoro also doesn´t fall asleep or gets lost when he is fighting a villain. The character gimmicks appear mostly in situations where nobody is about to die. So far his yelling is the only character gimmick Paulie has. It just is like that. If that wouldn´t be a character gimmick then he actually doesn´t have anything beyond his fighting style and his skills as a shipwright to shine with. And personally I doubt that Paulie is that 2 dimensional.
I never disputed that it ISN'T, hello McFly :P The point is, you're noticing it more often than you really should because you're set on wanting Franky to join, aren't I right ? Paulie's only flipped out twice in the main storyline, once in a flashback; and while it definitely seals his character gimmick it's no reason to state cause that it's going to get annoying. Like I said (and apparently have to keep saying) Oda hasn't made any of the other Straw Hat gimmicks annoying. Even I get a giggle out of Franky's poses and he's made a hell of a lot more situations out of that than Paulie's made out of 'OMG SHORT SKIRT'.
And as well, I don't think Paulie is 2D either. You think it's 2D when he runs to see Iceburg after he's shot, and is the only shipwright we see who has become completely panicked by it ? Is it 2D when you see him struggling against CP9 and trying to cope with the truth of who they are and what they've just done to him, Iceburg, and pretty much Water Seven as a whole ? You think he's 2D when he's giving up Galley-La to fight against CP9 ?
I think you're arguing just for the heck of it
Vivi is a complete exception quite obviously because of the fact that the Strawhats didn´t meet her at the location where the main part of the arc took place, but because they delivered her there. Think about it at the marine base Luffy met Zoro, in Syrop they met Usopp, at the Baratie they met Sanji, they went to Cocoyashi to get Nami back (who they´ve met in Shu Shu´s village), in Drum they´ve met Chopper. But at Alabasta they didn´t meet Vivi. They were taking her there. This is a completely different situation then it was for Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji and Chopper. So using Vivi as an example here doesn´t prove anything.
Okay, now you are really twisting things  The point isn't at all the reasons WHY Vivi and Franky end up joining forces with the Straw Hats, it's what they REPRESENT, basically the fighting together and working towards that same goal together. It's a temporary union. Both Vivi and Franky had to doubt the crew's power at first, but now that things have come to a head they have both thrown their lot in together to fight with each other for what they care for.
You fail to see that it isn't the situation that makes the character, it's the other way around. Characters make the situation, and here it's turned to a joining of forces where there surely wouldn'tve been inclination to do so before - not where one character met the other or whatever. That's the crux that you are missing here.
Neither am I interested in another Franky vs Paulie debate. But I´m allowed to voice my opinion for saying that yelling and shouting can turn out to be a more annyoing character gimmick then the other ones so far. Just as I said it in a couple of previous posts before. If I transfer Luffy´s, Zoro´s, Nami´s, Usopp´s, Sanji´s, Chopper´s, Robin´s, Paulie´s and Franky´s gimmicks to real life persons the guy who´s constantly yelling and shouting would be the first one I would have a little discussion with about not annoying the hell out of me. It´s just a personal opinion of mine.

Well, you just, uh, did
Seriously. Paulie doesn't yell all the flippin' time, neither does Franky, can we shut up about it now ? :P
