About Gohan's character, I always forget that he actually wanted to be a scholar in the early part of DBZ. What with Chi Chi's constant pushing on him to do his homework and study, I tend to think it was mainly her who wanted Gohan to be a scholar and not Gohan himself. So it does fit in his character that he would slack off once peace was restored (both with Cell and Buu).
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...

Well it was kinda both. Her constantly pushing him to study made him pretty much want to strive for that goal. Especially since all he ever did was study, study, study. Plus it was nice to see how he compared to Goten, who wasn't pushed to train or study at all and just be a regular kid. He pretty much ended up being exactly what Goku would have been like as a kid if he knew how to speak properly and wasn't naive about manners and what not.
-
gohan didn't need to be like goku. he was different and I loved hischaracter because of that. goten was a carbon copy that fans made toriyama to create. He has the most character development than anybody in the series

What proof have you to prove that the fans "forced Toriyama to create Goten as a carbon copy of Gokû?"
-
Everybody knows that the fans forced Toriyama to do everything, since its been so often proved by hard facts and not random fan opinion.
-
Goten was probably created to play the kid role since Gohan had grown up. Trunks was already introduced way beforehand so he had to age a little too.
-
Wasn't it a bit weird though about Goten's age? 7 years after Cell died and Goten was already 7 and yet take into effect 9 months of pregnancy, he should have only been 6 at the time of the Buu arc.
-
Maybe Chichi was already a month or two pregnant by the time Gohan & Goku went to go fight Cell. Does anyone know how much time usually passes before the stomach starts getting wider?

Toriyama was probably negligent with the math. That or one could chalk it up to conception being during the training for the Artificial Humans.
-
Presumably he was conceived during the "We're super Saiyan 24/7" week of relaxing before the big fight period. I liked the one dub line skirting around the issue. "Little Goten, who Goku left with Chichi before he went to fight Cell!"

Some cultures count the year of pregnancy.

Around the second trimester generally.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if it was just Toriyama forgetting to do his math right (although that is an interesting point about some cultures including the pregnancy in the person's age). I mean, early Dragonball taught us that you don't have to wait a full year for the dragonballs to be active again; you just need 8 months (that's always puzzled me).
-
Again I feel Toriyama-Sensei just wanted another kid from the Son family, since Gohan had already grown up.
-
Hmmm… trimester?
-
You think Goku's then-permanent death had to do with it (since Goten looks like kid Goku)? Say Goku hadn't died/remained dead after Cell, do you think Goten would have even existed? I don't think so.
@SSJLuffy:Hmmm… trimester?
Pregnancy is broken up into 3 trimesters, each lasting three months. When Robby said the second trimester, he meant in the 4 - 6 month period of the pregnancy.

DragonBall Season Sets from FUNimation are now dropping in price. I'm gonna take advantage of this!

Actually, Goten was far from a carbon copy. He had some of Goku's qualities that Gohan didn't have, but he certainly was no Goku. Especially considering the circumstances in which the two grew up.

next cross epoch: One Piece, Dragon Ball and Toriko, I'm calling it
EDIT: Let a man dream
that would be awesome manliness to the nth degree

What the fuck was this? -
-
It was a summary of the freiza arc by someone that watched the anime when they were 6.
-
That was terrible. Looking forward to the Rock Lee one coming out.
-
Good god that was stupid.
-
It's from Saikyo Jump. Which is basically the Shonen Jump for young'uns.
-
Just because it's intended for younger audiences does not give any series the right to be…whatever in the hell that was.
-
This is so sad… Vegeta was alive at the end, of all things.
-
Why is Vegeta happy that Goku arrived? I mean I get this for younger audiences and all, but get the characters right at least. He should have a slightly annoyed, yet be passively happy that he is here, or at least have him saing a line akin to: ''Took you long enough.''
-
Again it's a little kids magazine. But then again, hasn't everyone in Japan already seen/know the plot of Dragon Ball Z anyway?
-
Remember that hilarious DBZ filler where they reenacted the Cell Games with actors putting on ridiculous costumes with huge heads and Mr. Satan defeated Cell? This kinda reminded me of that. But it's a magazine for little kids, so I guess it's okay.
But what's up with Mangastream translating the soundwords?
-
Damn, I was hoping for chibi-Freeza to get cut in half.
-
Seriously, I found it hilarious. Just remembering how much time I spend watching the anime and now this kiddy version comes along and gives me everything in one chapter. It's too absurd to not find it hilarious. lol
-
What I find funny is that this gets a full color chapters when everything else doesn't and all these dragonball spin offs in the recent years makes me wonder how fat toriyama's wallet is.
-

It's a terrible summary. Lol at Goku fighting Frieza first form. Lol at Krilin and Vegeta surviving…

could just pretend this doesnt exist, i sure am
-
It's just a special little one-shot for kids, guys. Damn.
-
I guess I wonder why it exists at all. I mean, are there little kids getting excited over this, who haven't already seen Dragon Ball Kai?
I mean, if it were a weekly manga for little kids that offers a watered-down simplified version of dragon ball, that would be one thing. But a once-in-a-blue-moon 20 page retelling of parts of Dragon ball? Why? And since it comes out so infrequently, couldn't they at least attempt to do it justice?
-

Not to mention Planet Namek.
I also like the comparison to the short video at the 25th tournament of Mr. Satan "defeating" Cell.

Its funny this whole little scene is funnier than this.
-
And just like that, Goku defeated Frieza.
awesome
-
That wasn't very accurate…The real end to Goku v. Frieza didn't have as much closure.
-
It's just a special little one-shot for kids, guys. Damn.
As I said on the last page, just because it is intended for kids does not mean it has the right to be stupid.
-
I have always been a huge fan of Spider-Man, ever since I was a little kid. (Still am, in case the 2099 avatar didn't tip you off)
Let's imagine that if, when I was like, six or seven, some kids' magazine printed a fun little story about Spidey saving his girlfriend Gwen Stacy from the Green Goblin. It was short, it was drawn in a more "cute" style similar to the "Marvel Superheroes" series you see nowadays, and it ended with Spidey saving Gwen when GG throws her off the bridge, then beating him by chucking one of his own pumpkin bombs back at him. This makes him fall to the ground in a hilarious manner while Spider-Man (not Peter) and Gwen Stacy laugh and hug each other. The end.
Now, I am six years old in this scenario. Having read this little story, am I going to care, or even know, that in the original version: 1) Gwen was killed, actually due to the accidental whiplash from Spidey catching her by the leg with a web-line, or that 2) He was so enraged after her death that he almost killed the Goblin, or that ultimately 3) the Goblin was killed anyway when his own glider impaled him, or finally, and worst of all, that 4) Gwen Stacy and Norman Osborn apparently ba-donk-a-donked at some point?
No, I'm not going to care about those things, because I'm only six years old. I'd freakin' LOVE it, because I'm six years old and Spidey is like the coolest and bestest guy evar and I love reading ANYTHING that stars him. I'd imagine most adult Spider-Fans would chuckle it off and say, "aw, a for-kids version of those couple old issues. How cute."
Dragon Ball SD here is no different. It's not "bad." It's just a super-simplified little indulgence intended for children who are even younger than Shonen Jump's target audience. And I'm sure all those little kids in Japan are just eating it up.
-
The thing is, it doesn't really need to be dumbed down for kids. Ideally nothing ever should be dumbed down for kids. Especially considering it's Dragon Ball, which is easily one of the most recognizable mangas. I mean even assuming that little kids are actively reading this wouldn't they be far more likely to have watched Dragon Ball Kai? The magazine only comes out once every couple of months so it's far more likely that children that want a Dragon Ball fix have watched Kai.
Dragon Ball SD is pretty bad regardless of it's target audience.
-
I get tales being watered down for kids, but remember: DB was originally in a magazine that had a large child audience and they saw the real Frieza fight, including Krillin getting impaled (and blown up), Vegeta getting brutally beaten down, and the whole infamous "five minutes" (yeah it made more sense in manga mode but when you realize that 10 episodes of the anime were basically those five minutes…) The only reason I guess they cut a lot of the deaths out is probably just to show one condensed story from start to finish...instead of the convoluted stuff that occurs within a weekly magazine that keeps readers interested.
And yeah: Mr. Satan's "video" from the Budokai of beating Cell was epic.

Yeah, well those exact same kids are the ones who don't want their kids watching/reading such violent things.
Same thing happened in America with Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry.
Who cares, it's not like Krillin, Vegeta, AND NAMEK didn't get revived anyway. Did anything change… REALLY?
No.
