I like this chapter… a lot! I really want to see if this Reilly person really is someone special... Not much for Kidd, though- I'm with the idea of him being OHKO'd like Bellamy, any one of those other 'rookies' could be twice as powerful!
Chapter 498 "The 11 Supernova" Discussion
-
-
Why the fuck is everybody referring to Killer as "Kira?"
Please don't be stupid and say THAT'S WHAT THE KATAKANA SAYS
-
I thought it was only FFA.
-
Why the fuck everybody thinks Kid is the strongest.
-
no english scanlation yet?…... errrr
-
Wow, Rockstar seems like a real lame-o now. Only 92 million berry was it?
Still, these new bounties kind of feel like Luffy's first 30 million bounty. Everyone made a big deal about it. Then, Mr.3 comes around with a 42 million bounty, and Crocodile with his 80 million.
I'm probably not the only one thinking this, the bounties are going to get bigger then this before the series is over. I know someone said that each SH is probably going to have 100 million or more by the end of the series…
I'm remembering the Whitebeard crew's reaction to Rockstar. Those guys might really all have 100 million bounties! I mean, these supernovas are still being called rookies right?
-
Why the fuck everybody thinks Kid is the strongest.
He has the highest bounty. And while bounty != power, it's usually a safe bet that a high bounty comes with high power
-
no english scanlation yet?…... errrr
yeah i know one piece doesn't get the love it deserves. no scanlation yet but naruto and bleach have like 10 different scanlations. :wassat:
-
I'm surprised. Usually we have something by now. But this is shaping up to be interesting…

In a way, I think the big deal of the supernovas is that its so hard to even get to this point in the Grand Line that seeing certain pirates get midway and have bounties this high is an accomplishment. Of course its only going to get harder: the Yonkou are all going to have massive bounties for even certain crew members let alone their captains, the strongest of the Marines are chasing after them and the Shichibukai on the government side, we have tons of wild cards (Lola's "momma", Dragon) as well as the many typical annoyances and problems of the natives of that part of the world and…ultimately figuring out where Raftel is for the one who wants to be Pirate King. And of course bounty means nothing: Teach was a nobody in Whitebeard's crew who's suddenly Shichibukai and is aiming for even more. So I guess for the time being, we should applaude those that proved themselves in the first half, cause the second half is only going to get more brutal.
-
It seems each of the 8 new pirate crew has a dedicated theme too:
"Fire Tank" - Italian mafias;
"Benny" - American cowboys;
"Hawkins" - Medieval Knights/Wizards (The iron cross mark also gives off a religion-related vibe)
"Kid" - Modern age punk/hipsters;
"On Air" - DJ/Pop rock musicians (Apoo himself also sports traditional Chinese robe/plait)
"Excommunicated Monks" - Japanese monks (Urouge, a Sky Ocean native, has those shandian/skypeian wings, nice detail on Oda's part)
"Drake" - Renaissance European swordsman;
"Heart" - Pressumable Doctor/Surgeon outfits, as those behind Law all sport long coats, though the captain himself dresses like he could be from Kid's gang.Other thoughts:
Judging by his lines, Hawkins seem to share the strong obssession about "fate/destiny" with the Blackbeard Pirates, I wonder if the two groups are somewhat related, or the whole "fate decides a man's worth" belief is more common among the pirates of GL.
And speaking of Shichibukai, Kid looks like he could be Moria's son >.> (just look-wise, not trying to make some longshot here)

Yup, this chapter really fleshed out the pirate hierarchy in the grandline. I think we can assume that the majority of the underlings for the Yonkou are at the level of these "Rookie" pirates. If Luffy's going to become a Yonkou himself, every single member of his crew is going to have be at a level to take any of these captains 1 on 1.
I think that level of development is certainly feasible though. These new guys all look fantastic, but I'd take Odz against any of their crews.
Other observations:
-Urouge has the largest wings of any humanoid seen so far in the series (save pell). But they are of the swept back variety similar to Gedatsu and Shura and not the vestigial shoulder wings of the native skypians. From this, we can determine that Urouge came from the White Sea, but NOTfrom the island of Skypiea. For the record, all three wing types can be seen coming down from the moon together in the Enel cover story.
-Drake is actually interrupting a fight between Urouge and Killer (where Urouge looks to be the aggressor.) Also, Capone's henchman warns him against attacking Jewelry for fear of Marine attention. This "truce" between the Rookies has to be enforced. They are afraid of the Marines from Mariejoa and don't want to attract too much attention to them selves. If Luffy attacks a Noble and brings on the wrath of an Admiral, they'll scatter like flies.
-All of the Rookies are in Groves in the 20's or higher. Three are at the restaurant in Grove 24, four are on street in Grove 21, and Apoo and Kid are skirmishing "Somewhere" but with what looks like upper end houses in the background. This means that Zoro will likely NOT encounter any of the Rookies on his way to Grove 1. Instead, he'll be fighting the local bad asses. Like I said earlier, expect another Whiskey Peak bounty hunter massacre.
@archanfel:"Heart" - Pressumable Doctor/Surgeon outfits, as those behind Law all sports long coat, though the captain himself dress like he could be from Kid's group.
But my questions is why one of his subordinates looks like a life size teddy polar bear. Is that a hat? A Zoon? Or is this part of the larger bear conspiracy?
-
Apoo's arms are really weird, like he has an extra joint on each arm.
-
Apoo's arms are really weird, like he has an extra joint on each arm.
It actually is stated in his name panel that he's from a race of long arm people.
-
What if a few of the 11 rookies join luffy and become part of his nakama but doesnt travel with them. They can be his division commander, like how whitebeard has his 1st and 2nd division commanders. They will all be strawhat but sail on their own ships.

Kind of farfetched. Having divisions of your crew is more Yonkou-level. Luffys still a rookie. He might stir up a revolution among pirates much later in the series, though

That's not loyal.
-
Hm, I wonder if this has been brought up yet, but the Strawhat Crews' bounties have not been calculated after the Thriller Bark incident…given Kuma was there to observe the entire fight, he will probably inform the Government about them defeating Oz and Moria, giving each one a considerable boost.
Other Notes: Urouge is not from either Skypiea or the White Sea, but from ANOTHER Sky Island, which was pointed out that Enel and his crew came from one when they invaded Upper Yard.
Shakky's age is unusual, as we all know...either she was a child when being chased by Garp or has an anti-aging body that can look young for years even past 80+...does anyone else think she is related to Dr. Kureha? They do have similar dressing styles and behaviors...
-
Carlos net just posted his translation on franky-house so I think we can expect a scanlation soon.
-
More than anything, the biggest surprise for me was….
Shakky's HOW OLD!?
She was chased by Garp over 40 years ago!?Holy mother of god, she must have Kureha's immortal blood!

The WG don't want to know that the StrawHats kick Moria's ass.
How the hell did you know that Urouge is not from Skypiea? According to the translation he came from an sky island. Skypiea is an sky island too.
-
It actually is stated in his name panel that he's from a race of long arm people.
Ah, thanks. He's probably a good hand-to-hand fighter and could change the direction of his punches at the last second.
-

Of course they don't want people to know they kicked Moria's ass, but the same could be applied to Crocodile, and the WG still gave Luffy and Zoro a larger bounty. The WG can give them a larger bounty for whatever reason and not publicize why the raised it.
Secondly, yes, I cannot assume he did not come from Skypiea but you cannot assume he came from there either. I just think that among the numerous sky islands there are, that he came from Skypiea SPECIFICALLY is slim.
-
Hahah; the cotton candy thing with Chopper was cute. It looks like Robin has a rival now.
And Kid's face vaguely reminds me of Moria. -
Hm, I wonder if this has been brought up yet, but the Strawhat Crews' bounties have not been calculated after the Thriller Bark incident…given Kuma was there to observe the entire fight, he will probably inform the Government about them defeating Oz and Moria, giving each one a considerable boost.
But it's unlikely that the government would risk publicizing that another shichibukai had been defeated by giving their bounties a bump. Everyone knew Croc had been taking down, so there wasn't as much risk involved. They'll get bounty increases sometime during this arc though as I can't imagine that Luffy will let Kid enter the New World with a higher bounty than his.
Other Notes: Urouge is not from either Skypiea or the White Sea, but from ANOTHER Sky Island, which was pointed out that Enel and his crew came from one when they invaded Upper Yard.
Does it actually mention that he is Bilkan (bilka was the island Enel destroyed) because if so, that's a big deal. It would mean the the goat priests were not bilkan like I had thought and that Urouge might have strong feelings about the people who defeated the man who destroyed his home.
And @ BartKuma: I just said how we know he's not from Skypiea. His wings are too big.
Shakky's age is unusual, as we all know…either she was a child when being chased by Garp or has an anti-aging body that can look young for years even past 80+...does anyone else think she is related to Dr. Kureha? They do have similar dressing styles and behaviors...
I think that we're eventually going to discover that all of these old timers are related somehow. Whether they are all of Gol D. Roger's old crewmates or simply the pirates he defeated on his way to the top. Oda's gonna have to do some major flashbacks relating all of these people.
-
If Oda does do flashbacks to that time frame he might not even label anyone and leave it to the readers to figure out like he did to Morgan. Frankly I prefer it like that.
-
Well since Zoro is going to grove 1, that means its in the lawless zone, and the most dangerous place there, since it says as u get lower in number the more dangerous it gets.
-

You were probably typing this out when I replied to the other poster's view on this, but I said that even though they won't publicize Moria's defeat, they can still raise their bounties to prove that they are a threat.
Also, I don't think Luffy cares if someone has a higher bounty than he does, that would seem very out of character for Luffy to "not let Kid enter the New World with a higher bounty than his". I know Luffy likes to prove his strength but Shakky told him that Kid causes problems to civilians, so Luffy would know he is the better man.
-
Anyone think Urouge will know mantra? Seems like the type of skill a monk would have, I reckon.
-
Why the hell were the pages in the wrong order in the file i downloaded?

get it Chapter 498 scanlated:

I wonder if there will be many small skirmishes now rather then large battles between the crews in the new world. sort of like battles between roger's crew and white beard's crew.

sometimes little tiny effects go into super small bubbles, if there is nothing in a bubble then you missed nothing. Except for a little pop sound or something. I didnt work on this chapter with them, but shit. If your that picky you do the typesetting, or its a miss by the translators. Get over it
-
Jyabura reminds me of those wolves from Skypiea.
-
Oh on a side note, seeing Kamie's reaction to Shakky's remark about her being Hacchi's lover, can we say there finally is love in OP? ;)
-
Screw all this high bounty crab
THE ULTIMATE QUESTION!!!!!!!
When the hell did cotton candy become Chopper's favorite food?
Besides the bounty was it ever mentioned?:getlost::ninja:I've been wondering about this too. I assumed that the picture was from the Water 7 party, but I don't recall seeing him eating cotton candy there, or anywhere in the manga for that matter.

Well she's definitely got a schoolgirl crush on him.

What are you talking about? They completely skipped over Hatchan's line on page 4.
"Nyuu
mou daijoubu mokuteki no 13 ban gurobu wa kono tsugi da!!"it's alright, our destination, grove number 13, is next!!"
"NyuuThey also say on page 11 that there are five routes through the Grand Line, even though the text says there's seven, and the panel below clearly shows seven routes.
I guess to some it's nitpicky, but to me, it's just sloppy.
-
ill ask them if you want
-
Oh I see. They used the panel where chopper was supposed to say "That doesn't make me happy you bastard" to start brooks joke. They put choppers line where they should've had Hachis.
Actually it looks like they put Camies line where Hachis was supposed to go, and choppers where Camies was supposed to be.

My ears are plugged, and my eyes are bound by this holy cloth! I shall not be spoiled by ye all; just popped in to say the Baccano! reference in the latest (?) chapter involving Jewelry Bonney is pretty awesome.
I didn't know Oda watched awesome anime like that!
-
Pretty sure Bonney is based off a real life female pirate.
-
Yup, Anne Bonny, who was Calico Jack Rackham's lover.
Epic chapter but….Roronoa-chan? Seriously?
-
Calico Yorki was Brooks captain right? What are the chance him and Anne Bonney had a kid ( I remember reading Anne Bonney got off scot free cause she was pregnant or something) and that's Jewelry Bonney?
Although she does seem to be from South Blue, not West like Yorki (not to say it couldn't have happened on their adventures).
