don is onomatopoeia of a dramatic effect.

どん and ドン
are four characters you'll often see if you read the One Piece manga. Whenever a new character is introduced, or some revelation is made, or some strong joke punchline is presented, the sound effect blurbs behind the characters involved will say "DON!!!!"
For example, I just picked a random chapter out from One manga… and here's some DON action:
