I think that may be the most balanced and well informed review I've ever seen… ever. (Except for that part with the commentary, I guess. What's the deal there?) Note that examples of his own personal opinion are very toned down. Instead he focuses on what he thinks you'll think about it, starting with people completely unfamiliar with the show, then to people who are interested, and then to people like us.

He's not overly critical, but he doesn't suck Funi's cock over the whole thing either.

For those for whom reaching for the remote each episode is a chore, here's even a marathon feature that plays the entire disc without the opening or closing sequences.

I bought mine over the weekend and A-Kon and PirateNeko, taboo, Blakeofthesky, Ms Cricket and I all kinda did a little marathon of it once we got back to the apartment.

I am satisfied and very impressed for the most part. A very truthful translation and nice casting and acting. They used "santouryu" and "haramaki", which about killed Neko and I dead.

Now, the only two things I disliked. I did not like the ending theme, and I really REALLY did not like the voice they used for Ben Beckman. Yeah, small part, I know, but still. I felt the voice was too old and just did not suit him.

Other than that? Totally worth it.

Got it today from DeepDiscount. I did like the whole Zoro-talking-through-his-Wadō Ichimonji thing that FUNI did, nice touch, I wonder how hard that was for Mr. Sabat. Some of the lines (on the subs) are a little off (not the translation, but the spelling and such), and it looks a little grainy and fuzzy when the action scenes kick in, but that might just be my computer's DVD-ROM, I'll try it out in other DVD players. I'm starting to think that FUNI wanted to throw in some words and lines, but they couldn't because the mouth flaps wouldn't fit (that would explain why they couldn't go and use the "Jaya, Land of Meat" line that Luffy was supposed to use and make me LOL). On the subs Buggy says flashy a lot; they used it a couple of times, but not even half as many as he says…oh well, it's not that important.

Overall its pretty great, looking forward to the next one and I hope the graininess clears up on a real DVD player or something...it's annoying me a tad...

The One Piece one is like the thickness of a manga volume. Which is good, because I expect to own ALOT of these as time goes by.

It's good that the uncut Naruto boxsets have three discs, as it means better quality for the episodes. Putting 7-8 episodes on each disc is pushing it. Honestly, I think the Naruto sets are a lot nicer than the One Piece sets. The Naruto sets have a quality box, and a good spread with the original cover art. The sketch book is a very nice addition, and consumes hardly any space whatsoever. How you think of it as a big fat book that's 90% blank is beyond me. All this One Piece set is is a thin box with a couple cheap thin cases. I'm not complaining about it or anything. But it's definatley not praise worthy, especially in comparison to the Naruto sets.

That's probably the strongest anti-4Kids statement I've ever seen from a "legitimate" anime source. I love it!

It took me forever to figure out how to find the commentary tracks,too! It should be in the extras section yet for god knows what reason Funi stuck it in with the episode selection section! :\

I agree with this review 99%. It sumed up exactly how I felt. Especially towards the dub and the actors. I have to say, I appreciated the occasionally ackward dialogue in exchange for staying as true to the original dialogue as possible. I actually think in most cases, the actors really, really made it work and sound natural in english. Sonn'ys Usopp specifically, stumbles a bit but everyone else pulled it off well.

Have you even opened the thing? It's not a sketch book, its a book of storyboards.

Every page is set up almost like a calendar. And the only boxes that have anything in them would be the Sat and Sun boxes. All the rest are blank.

So yeah, its a book full of mostly blank space, that adds about 50% to the thickness of the box set.

I'm not sure why the Naruto box of cardboard is somehow "quality" and the plastic cases of the One Piece set is "cheap" either. Since the plastic one is the one I don't have to worry about it falling apart.

Okay go to the main menu of disc 1, and go to the episode selection menu. You will then see commentary under episode 1.

Go to episodes. right underneath the first one there's an option called "with commentary." That's the only bit for this particular set.

Mistake of terminology, I know what it is though.

The the box that holds the One Piece DVDs are nothing more than thin card board to. The storyboard booklets only have a few blank pages. The storyboards aren't full of great art or anything, but that's what a storyboard is. It's a nice addition. It's also very thin, and occupies hardly any space. The rest of the space is occupied by the flap that has the three DVDs. The box is very sturdy and the flap containing the DVD as well. The art on it is very nice to. It's a pretty neat box. I really don't understand when such little space differences became so significant though anyway. I would rather have the story board booklets than blank space. You must be some kind of space freak if you're really that concerned.

The package that the DVD comes in is large part of the collectors value. The packaging/art work has always been something that I've seen people tlak about and always comes to mind when I think about a DVD. It's embarrassing to see people like you spend your time criticizing what other people like to talk about on a message board.

Occasionally the dialogue is like this:

Zoro: You should take care with other people's things!

That sentence sounds like something you'd read in a fansub. It could be changed to sound more natural in english. It could be something like:
You should be more careful with other people's things! or even "You should take better care of other people's things!"

Thing is…I prefer the effort to keep the dialogue a bit more comic bookish and literal instead of americanization and "improving" the script like they were doing with the tv dub. Most, if not all, of the dialogue sounds believable because of the acting anyway. I actually enjoyed the dialogue alot. Altho, I do agree the actors seemed to have problems making some of the slightly ackward dialogue sound natural in english.
Like when Usopp says thing like: Today will be another normal day for my village because you and your cronies will never set foot in it.

It didnt sound as natural or as passionate as it could have/did in the original.
Sabat seems to be the best so far at making the dialogue work no matter what. He's the Owen Wilson of the One Piece dub.

I don't think any of the dialog sounded too "literal" (well, Kaya's "But this is just vengeful poison" sounded kinda farfetched)… But you can stay true to the original without sounding like a damn translation book.

Which is why I prefer normal sounding dialog, as opposed to literal translations. Unless the scene in question is supposed to sound exaggerated or something.

Well to people who watch the fansubs all the dialogue sounds way more natural. But to fans who're used to entire speeches being rewritten completely to sound natural or improve and/or americanize the scene, a few things might stand out.

I think they just forgot to put it back in when they were dubbing it. Or they might not have the sound effects to use in the dub in the first place. It's likely one of those two as opposed to them intentionally leaving it out.

The most probable reason is that Funi got a straight up voiceless version of the song which they dubbed over. Sound effects wouldn't be in that version. They'd have to be put in after or during the dub process.

It's not so much they cut out the sound effects as they didn't take the time to put them in.

Rather than sound effects missing, the thing I noticed more about the opening was that, for like the first five episodes on disc 1, the English audio for the opening was off the animation by like half a second. But then it corrected itself at Episode 6 and was correct for the rest of disc 1 and all of disc 2. Did anyone else notice that or is it only my disc or something, 'cause I haven't seen it mentioned.

I'll agree about the acting, having completed watching both discs yesterday. Speaking of "odd-wording", that seems to abound in the awkward episode recaps, where they take a few lines from the last episode and throw them in at places they weren't quite at before, and even slightly change a few lines. But that's not FUNi's fault - that's Toei's fault for putting together awkward episode recaps.

And for the record, I think that "You should take care with other people's things!", while not the exact wording most people would use, is a perfectly acceptable utterance.

Actually, at the end of the day, after I have a few dozen volumes of these things, I'll probably take them out of the boxes entirely and just line up the dvd cases.

I've noticed too. Especially when Luffy punches the sea monster. Usually it hits a certain point in the song, but it didn't quite reach it there in the first few episodes. I honestly don't really care so much since I hardly ever watch the first intro anyway. but yeah, it's not your dvd.

Received my copy a couple of weeks back. I got soooo sentimental. One Piece was my first anime and my second manga way back in 2002 and I had completely given up hope of ever seeing a legal uncut version in my collection. But there it was in the mail. No computer file can compare to that! I am so getting the second dvd when it comes out in September.

My email actually went something like this:

"I pre-ordered the item some months ago, and it was shipped this past 26th. I got charged with 37.49 (mind you, plus 8.00 International shipment in my case) and I see the item now at 21.99. Can you guys please help me? I mean… I would have been better not to preorder"

I never did mention the price-guarantee despite knowing of its existence. The executive that saw my email went and confirmed the info (I added order number plus the link of item) and made me a refund of not 13.00, but a refund of 15.50. It was made the very same day I emailed (emailed at about 4pm, got refund at 9pm... Mexican time that is)

I moreorless sent them this. Asking if the Price Guarantee covers this, and they basically answered with a "thanks for taking advantage of our Price Guarantee, I'll be refunding the 13 dollars back into your account."

Theyre a professional company, not some dude in his basement slapping together dvds. They wouldnt just forget something like that. They consciously chose to leave out the sound effects for the english dub. Maybe they just didnt want to go through the trouble of splicing them into the dub song and felt the song was better w/out them anyway?

I meant, specifically, the acting in that scene sounds much more authentic based on the Kappei Yamaguchi's acting. The situation sounds VERY desperate and so does Usopp. Sonny Strait sounds upset but nowhere near as desperate and physically drained. For just getting clubbed in the head with a giant mallet he sounds pretty good.
FTR, words like cronies and goons just sound really over the top in general. It'd be really hard to make them sound natural and believable,but the dub seems to be going for "comicbook realism" in the dialogue anyways.

I agree that it worked but I can imagine five or so other phrases that would sound less ackward. Which is why I understand what the reviewer was talking about. I'm not up in arms about this since I prefer fidelity to the japanese script over rewrites. I was just explaining what he was talking about since someone asked what the reviewer meant about the language used.
