Got this game a week ago on the virtual console. I already beat the game and got all of the cystral shards. Also, I am now collecting the enemy cards and trying to beat Boss Battle Mode. Anyway, the game is fun and the music is very good. Plus, the final boss fight was fun. Anyway, who else played this game?
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

^^
I've never played it, but I downloaded it for my brother a few years ago.He beat it on the first day. It doesn't sound too hard, but the mixing of powers sounds neat.
-
This game was amazing for its time. Short, but extremely fun.
The power mixing mechanic allowed for great versatility and customization. My favorite is easily the Double Bomb power, i.e. the Fireworks powers.
-
I got it off Virtual Console a month or two back, and haven't really played it that much.
I'm trying to get all the crystal shards, but sometimes it can be a real pain in the ass.
-
I had it back on the N64. Defiantly fun, and I loved the power combinations. I wish it would return. I remember getting to Ripple Star and beating Dark Matter and I thought that the cutscene to come after was just a hint at a sequel. But it turns out I never really finished it. I really don't like looking for Crystal Shards.
-
I loved this game when I was a kid. When I bought the game I ended up also getting the Tenchi Muyo Boxsets since I watched Tenchi after I played Kirby.
Favorite Power Mix would be the Darth Maul esque sword.
-
^ Wasn't it CutterxElectric?
-
Yeah, that was the combination.
Bought it a few weeks ago at a PlaynTrade ($20, you folks think that was a good deal for the actual cartridge?). Fun game, but I'm horrible when it comes to collecting those cards. One thing that surprised me (which shouldn't have) was when I beat Pop Star and had 14% completed. What should I have expected, 30 hours of gameplay? =O
-
I found the more interesting ones to be the Cutter/Spike ability (giant mouth formed from your arms) and the Cutter/Rock ability (able to carve yourself into characters resembling Rick and the like)

Agreed. The graphics and lighting effects were quite amazing for the N64, as well. Kirby often looks perfectly spherical, and many of the environments are very well done.
Oh, and that final boss battle kicked ass, complete with epic, RPG-like music. Which reminds me, that game had a great soundtrack, too… Love that third Ripple Star stage BGM. Oh, and that kick-ass Miracle Matter boss battle tune.
Oh god, and the factory BGM...!
-
Loved the game. Favorite ablitiy was electric and rock. Made you a paddle ball of death in a sense.
02 was such a weird ass trippy boss. They're good at making guys like that.
-
Never had a N64 back then, and I missed one opportunity to grab the game pre-owned. I've always wanted to play this game. I'll have to download this one.
-
I definitely loved playing this game when I was little as well. The only thing I would have changed would probably have been the difficulty of the final boss, that little area where you could avoid being hit by him entirely made the fight extremely easy, but otherwise it was absolutely perfect. I especially loved the picnic mini-game at the end of each stage.
As for favorite abilities.. Probably the Burn/Cutter, Ice/Cutter (especially on that one stage with the lake ice, I used to have a ball skating all over that area), and the Ice/Spark abilities. Killer fridges = Epic. -
This reminds me: Anyone know what happened to that new Kirby Nintendo was planning a while back? Did it get canceled or what?
-
pretty sure it was cancelled.
that said, this game was a classic from my 6th grade days, right before the cube came out.
-
I got this for the N64 when it first came out, and I did (and still do) love it. Also, while I agree that most of the power-up combos were awesome, some were just downright stupid (fire-ice, fire-electric)
-

Nope…It's still in development and is supposed to be released this year. There is a Nintendo Conference on the 10th and E3 still in the summer in which we could get more details. Too bad the Gamecube game never came out though....
-
Silence usually means cancellation (See Tilt N Tumble GCN, Air Ride 64), or so I've learned from Nintendo. This game was supposed to be in development since what, late 2004/ early 2005? It was on the same block as Mario Baseball, and that got out first. Then it was "We moved it to, uh, Wii".
And we haven't heard shit since.

Nah, it was on their Japanese Release for 2008 since last year. This is the most recent picture.

It'd be better if there was a gameplay video instead of some release chart. I've been eager for a few games that ended up on release charts and very little coverage here and there, and guess the result.
Now as far as abilities go in Kirby 64, my favorite are both Cutter abilities. I mean c'mon, he takes off his face and throws it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's why we should AT LEAST wait until the Nintendo Conference tomorrow or E3 before coming to a conclusion.
For example, Super Mario Family Baseball (whatever it's called) and Disaster: day of Crisis now have release dates in May/June of this year. We don't know too much about those games either and a lot of people thought D:DoC was canceled because Project Hammer was canceled and both had about the same amount of info released.
-
Mario is having another Baseball game? Is it based after the last one on the Gamecube? That one was pretty good.
ON-TOPIC: I liked this Kirby game quite a bit. I feel bad for Kirby though. I've never given him enough attention. Only played Nightmare in Dreamland and this one. Does anyone know a good one I should get off of the Virtual Console?
-
Aren't the only Kirby games on the Virtual Console this and Kirby's Adventure?
-
Seriously? That's it. Oh well. Would Kirby Adventure be worth it, or should I save and wait for another?
-
I've only played the preview of it on Brawl, so I can't really give you a definate answer (try it yourself and see what you think). I'd recommend the spinoff games such as Pinball Land or Canvas Curse (though Pinball Land might be a bit difficult to find if you don't buy stuff online).
Funny, I've mostly played the spinoff games instead of the actual side-scrollers until recently. :silly:

Coulda sworn it was there last year too….
Good to hear SOMETHING from it.
-
By the way, my favorite abilities are fire/bomb, fire/cutter, cutter/bomb, and rock/needle.
-
What about Rock/Lightening? That shit is trippin' wags.
-
I thought this game was decent, mostly for the ability fusion thing. I still think Adventure, Dreamland 2 and 3, and Super Star are all much better, though.
-
They need to hurry the fuck up and put KDL3 on virtual console. My copy broke.
