@Lobster:
..that's not what I meant. I was just wondering that because it's not actually a comic in Shounen Jump; and I thought SJ only ran advertisements for their own products in the magazine.
And I don't believe in that "anime = Japanese only" thing anyway. In Japan the word refers to all animation in general.
It's so stupid that it's segregated and junk in America. I tend to agree with the latter, that any location can create an "anime"So yes, I for one am happy that the barriers are being broken and blurred these days.
It's probably going to be an even more enjoyable experience. The reason people think Avatar is Japanese though is because it looks like a Japanese cartoon. The people who call Avatar an anime are people who use the term "anime" for Japanese cartoons as we do, only they mistakenly think Avatar is one of those because of it's art sytle. It's not that people are being technical or more open and reffering it to as an anime because they know it's used to apply to everything. They're the same people who call only Japanese cartoons anime, only they don't know what they're talking about.
As for the whole anime=cartoon arguement… I don't care if an anime is called a cartoon or whatever. But I think that it is convenient to have a word to use to contrast American cartoons and Japanese cartoons, as they are drastically different. When you start calling cartoons anime just because the word is used differently in Japan, that's just stupid. Anime has pretty much become an official word in America/other English speaking contries to contrast the two genres. If someone is calling Avatar an anime because they know of how the term is used in Japan, then fine by me. Though I do think it's wierd, much wierder then calling an anime a cartoon. But if that person thinks Avatar is an anime because of the art style, then tell them otherwise. Don't justify a mistake as people using the term "anime" as it is in Japan.
What would we do if "anime" wasn't a term in English speaking countries ? Call it JAPANimation ? Refer to them as cartoons as all other animated shows ? What would anime conventions be called ? Or would Spongebob and Death Note be at the same convention ? I'll use "cartoons" for American animation and sometimes Japanese animation in certain conext, and use "anime" for Japanese animation.
The only time I bother bringing up how the term is used in Japan is when an ignorant fanboy yells at someone "NARUTOZ NOTTA CARTUNE IDIOT!!!".
-
Anime=Japanese animation. Check mate. End of story.

Only in English speaking countries. In Japan, anime = animation.

Whatever. My point is, let's not get into redefining what a word can mean. The idiots over at CN have already begun trying to define "cartoon" as "anything where people act goofy and retarded regardless of being animated or not," so let's just leave anime alone, shall we?
-
I can't wait to see the cover for season one part 2. I wish Viz would do the same for Naruto, release 1 every 2 monthes. But lets not change the subject by talking about Viz and Naruto.
-
But lets not change the subject by talking about Viz and Naruto.
Why not? everyone else seems to enjoy bringing up Naruto whenever they see it proper to do so.
-
@Lobster:
Do they still air shows like Cat Dog and Invader Zim on there?
From the good ol' days~
not relly.
it more of the shows that stayed for between 1 month-few years
List of some on the Nicktoons network:
Danny Phantom,El TIgre,Ren and Stimpy,Catscratch,Avatar,Skyland,Kappa,Etc.It should not go on this channel on terms that since most shows are really not that well. I hope it stays on CN….

How would you know what the guys at Cartoon Network define cartoon as you described it? You have no proof. Plus, don't call the guys at Cartoon Network idiots just because they do something you don't like does not mean they are idiots.

@Lobster:
WHERE ARE THE RATING CHARTS?
No one ever posts them.. -_-
And isn't the rating system flawed anyway, because of that whole "Nelson Box" system? How can they even tell?
Well, here are some ratings…
http://forums.toonzone.net/showpost.php?p=2848960&postcount=260
F'ing Bakugan is gaining ratings…
...Oh god, I feel like GaryPotter, now. XD
-
At least it's staying on Saturday mornings (I think).
-
Argh..
I don't understand the raiting system. Even for those with the Nelson Box, how do they know the age or gender of the person watching it?
It's usually done in that, ex: 12-13% male tween audience (or w/e) format. Do they give out questionnaires as well? And don't you think that the type of person who would take the time to actually fill one out would have a somewhat higher view of, or general concern for contributing to society?
-
Look, don't worry about Bakugan. Whether it rises one week and falls another is not relevant. It's not the kind of thing that has any kind of long-term viability or potential. Not like Pokémon of Yu-Gi-Oh. It's just like Beyblade or Battle B-Damon: a gimmicky toy-show that might start off good but will die very quickly.

Nielsen Television Ratings are gathered by one of two ways; by extensive use of surveys, where viewers of various demographics are asked to keep a written record (called a diary) of the television programming they watch throughout the day and evening, or by the use of Set Meters, which are small devices connected to every television in selected homes. These devices gather the viewing habits of the home and transmit the information nightly to Nielsen through a "Home Unit" connected to a phone line. Set Meter information allows market researchers to study television viewing habits on a minute to minute basis, seeing the exact moment viewers change channels or turn off their TV. In addition to this technology, the implementation of individual viewer reporting devices (called people meters) allow the company to separate household viewing information into various demographic groups. In 2005, Nielsen began measuring the usage of digital video recordings (TiVo, for example) and initial results indicate that time-shifted viewing will have a significant impact on television ratings. The networks are not yet figuring these new results into their ad rates at the resistance of advertisers.
Now be quiet .

If I wanna call something an "anime" cause it looks like it, I'm going to and technically I'm not wrong in the process. I'm not gonna go out of my way and call it a "cartoon that takes style from Japan".
Anyways, I just now noticed Goosebumps is gone.

Um, you can just call it a cartoon. >.>
-
But if we use the term "anime" then anime is more accurate.
-
Australia started to air more one piece
-
Yup, 4Kids reruns.
-
But if we use the term "anime" then anime is more accurate.
I really don't see how you come to that conclusion. In America and other English speaking countries, anime is used as a term to refer to Japanese cartoons. We don't need to try to be like Japan in every way. It's actually very convenient to be able to use a different term for Japanese cartoons that doesn't sound completely stupid.
-
No they started to air more Funimation episodes
they have already aired 2 new episodes -
No they started to air more Funimation episodes
they have already aired 2 new episodesBut that was also all. They've apparently gone back to 4Kids-reruns now. They simply got two episodes further than the american CN did.
-
i doubt this has any point here but tonami schedule will move around again on the 10th
9- blue dragon
9:30- blue dragon
10- naruto
10:30 narutoEdit: thought i'd let ya know
-
So Blue Dragon and Naruto has their own 1 hour slot. One hour for each show.
I assume TOEI is still discussing with CN, but from this, it looks like it may not return.

Goosebumps will be back on Halloween with different episodes that the ones they aired before. Forgot where I heard this.
Personally, I try not to say "Anime" anymore. I just call everything as a cartoon, same for comics. But "Anime" and "Manga" pop out of my mouth alot sometimes, then I hit myself.

Looks like Cartoon Network is trying to get Blue Dragon a wider audience . Ultimately , Cartoon Network came to the realization that many won"t watch a show at 10:30 or 10:00 . Especially, after Naruto is over, People change the channel.
-
Toonami continues it's slow, agonizing death.
And also, Goosebumps doesn't HAVE anymore episodes.
-
didnt it never have new episodes since like a month after it started airing? I always remember going to watch Naruto and seeing the ending of an episode the same week every month

Good for you. I know my own moment of enlightenment was when I walked into a Japanese movie store, headed straight for the 'Anime' section and there in front of me was a wall of Walt Disney with Japanese stuff cluttered behind it.

That's puzzling.
-
@Sandai:
That's puzzling.
You thinking that is puzzling is puzzling…
-
Oh no I got crushed by Cosmic Debris.
I just thought it was weird that you'd find stuff like that in an anime section but then again we do the same here.
-
Greg is in Japan…"Anime" just means animation out there.
-

All I'm saying is, it's a cartoon with a very Japanese art style. And considering cartoons in Japan is called "anime", and we preserve that name here, calling it an "anime" is accurate. All in all, I really don't care either way cartoon =/= anime, comic/graphic novel =/= manga. I use anime and manga on Japanese things but not on American things just like most, all I'm saying is there are people who think differently.
Believe it or not, there's people out there who call Teen Titans, Transformers Animated, and Ben 10 "anime". Avatar being called anime should be the least of anyones concerns.
-
@Sandai:
That's puzzling.
It's.. not puzzling at all.

Toonami: Studio Pierrot Edition
-
Goosebumps will be back on Halloween with different episodes that the ones they aired before. Forgot where I heard this.
How does a 10 year old show gain magical new episodes?
On another note, I don't see why Cartoon Network is being so spastic with their schedule lately. It seems to change a lot since One Piece is gone. What's that CN? You can't find a show that gets better ratings?
It's sad that CN is gonna die soon, they used to be one of the best.
-
Toonami: Studio Pierrot Edition
Yeah , I also noticed that all of Toonami's shows are Studio Pierrot series I wonder if Toei's relationship with Cartoon Network is over.
-
I wonder if Toei's relationship with Cartoon Network is over.
YEAH
Let's all gather around the campfire and discuss it when we have no additional evidence!!
What A Jerk
-
Speaking of Goosebumps, some months ago I heard that CN was gonna start airing Big Bad Beetleborgs.
-

I'm pretty sure that's bull. Why would they resurrect that beast?

Why are you calling me a Jerk ?. I was merely wondering if Toei's relationship with Cartoon Network was over.

Um ….. Lobster , April fools has passed.........
-
I'm pretty sure that's bull. Why would they resurrect that beast?
I would say I'd enjoy it for nostalgia, but unlike Goosebumps the only thing I remember about Beetleborgs is having gotten several of the toys from Burger King or something.
But yeah, I thought I'd like Goosebumps coming back but ultimately never watched it upon its return.
-
I'm pretty sure that's bull. Why would they resurrect that beast?
I don't know what was more cheesy Beetleborgs or VR Troppers.
-
One Piece isn't number 1 on Rightstuff anymore but is still listed as one of their bestsellers.
http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/main/ -
The #1 spot may have been inflated by the sale. It's not in the top ten anymore, but it could be because people aren't pre-ordering anymore. . . because they already pre-ordered it.
-
Neilsen ratings are worthless yet everyone seems to go by them… ...they only give out a 1000 boxes, probably the same amount in diaries and phone calls, yet theyre somehow able to tell how many MILLION people watched a show? Did they leave the box on, while the TVs off? Did they fill in a show in the diary they they didnt even watch? Calling... ...well, typically you just count one viewer and the show theyre currently watching, if theyre even watching something.
Now then, some cable companies will collect data from their boxes and send it off to neilsen (meaning you all could be a neilsen family and not know it) But to get that kind of numbers every cable box in the country would have to be submitting to beilsen (and yes they have the money to give to these cable companies)
I myself would consider Avatar anime... ... I have always considered it so because I am not a fan, and unaware of where it was produced... ...But thing about this... ...we dont call american cartoons "anime" ...yet many were animated in Japan and other asian countries. ...yet theyre somehow "american cartoons." So wouldnt Avatar fall under the same rules?
Kappa Mikey, Perfect Hair... ...not anime... ...its like they tried to be, but so clearly not. Invader Zim... ...an american Nicktoon! Yet often stocked in the anime DVD section. Boondocks... ...I say has an anime style, but have never considered it anime, just as Im sure no one else here does.
Manga... ...Im just afraid to use the word... ...is it Mayn-ga or Mahn-ga? I dont want to sound like an idiot infront of a fan. When I say "anime" if its a person older than me who I dont work with I almost immediately follow up the word with "japanese animation," because Im still not sure if the entire country knows what that is... ...hell 3 years ago, half the people I knew didnt even know what an "mp3" was... ...so vocabulary use is very confusing in my little world
It's sad that CN is gonna die soon, they used to be one of the best.
Theyre all going down hill. I used to like Nick more than CN. Then I liked Disney more than CN, then when they got rid of all their shows, since I didnt get Toon Disney and Nicktoons, I liked CN… ...it was great... ...Then when I finally got the other channels, I liked them for then CN... ...but now that theyre all clones of each other (showing shows that made me like CN more) I like CN more.
Dont know about where you live, but as far as local channels go, there are no after school cartoons to watch (PBS doesnt count). So what are you going to watch? All these networks suddenly see that theyre getting more ratings. Confused, they just assume that theyre good at was they do, so they kep doing what they do, which of course digs them deeper into the grave.
-
It's Mahn-ga, just to let you know.
