Anyone else following this amazing Gonzo show?

It has a quite an ambitious art style, with a sort of a pattern design lining clothing & characters, with a mix of cg in some parts, it's really gorgeous & stylized . The setting is a futuristic world, set apart from the original book, yet maintaining the look & feel of early 1900s Paris.

The story is really interesting as well, not to sure how close it follows the core of the book, obviously they've taken certain liberties in areas, but I think it works really well. It's definitely worth a look.

Yeh, I'd definitely say loosely in terms of the setting and time frame. But the core of the story is said to be fairly faithful to the original book.

A lot of anime series seemed to be based off of books recently (beyond manga I mean). I really disliked the book. It was twice as long as it needed to be in my opinion. Is this series an ongoing one or does it have a definitive ending? I am a big fan of most series by Gonzo, so I may search for some of the episodes to download when I get the chance.

              Bump

I'm surprised no one else has seen this fascinating Anime/Manga. The pattern you see on the clothes/backgrounds are actually photoshop textures. It's amazing what you can do with Photoshop, ne?

In any case, it's not entirely faithful to the book. Gankutsuou, which literally tanslates to "King of the Cave", is a demon that Edmond Dantes found while he was in prison. In exchange for his freedom and good fortune, the demon would control a part of him. That's why Dantes is blue and Vampirish looking.

Also, they combined two characters to make Beppo. Originally, Albert had first been seduced by a woman, then a man switched places when Albert went to meet her at night. Also, Luigi let Albert go in the book because the Count had saved his life and Luigi had sworn to respect him and his own (meaning his friends). In Gankutsuou, to get Albert back, Dantes basically made Luigi shit himself.

There's a lot of other changes from the book, like Haydee being his traveling companion from Eastern Space rather than a slave from Greece; and Albert's fiance in the book was just lazy as hell rather than an energetic tart as she's portrayed in Gankutsuou.

It's definitely worth a watch. The imagery is amazing, and the story has an altogether different ending from the book.

I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

This anime was beautiful. The art takes some getting used to in the beginning but it's totally worth watching.

I've been a big fan of the anime for a long time for reasons that would take too long to list out, but had been avoiding the manga adaptation, mostly because I didn't see how it could have all those visual tricks that the show did. I came across a link to the first scanlated chapter though, recently, so I decided to check it out, especially after hearing that Maeda was the one doing it and not some commissioned artist.

The art's something that you wouldn't be surprised to see in a newspaper comic strip, most of the time, which is a shame, but there are some pretty cool looking panels:

                    !
                    !
                    !

Story-wise it seems to follow the anime pretty closely, although only the first chapter's been scanned (back in 2005, so I'm assuming the project is dead), so maybe it branches off later on. I'm pleased with how the Count himself came out looking, though, if nothing else.
