The end of the chapter proved Duval is a new character. Luffy would not have a freak out similar to how he did with Garp to a past villain or character. Chances point to who trained Luffy and Ace, possibly Dadan.
Chapter 493 "I know" Discussion

Anyone notice how Hachi's 3-arm punch has his topmost arm behind his head? It looks totally wrong.
Someone said it looked strange, or something. Can't remember if it was this forum though. Oda fucked up though.
-
im thinking Duval is a D
-
@Twilight:
Duval has been shown to be somewhere along the lines of a half-giant in size. Garp is normal in size.
Uh, Garp's a big guy. He's not a giant or anything like Duval, but he's towering.
-
Random Thought Occurs: Is it me or is this the very first time we've seen Nami rescue Luffy from the water? More than anybody it tends to be Sanji. Granted, everyone else is a bit busy, but still thought it was worth noting that Nami has now made a Luffy-rescue of her own. I think this may also be Franky's first DF-user rescue.
-
German nearly always translates names.
Don Krieg is called Don Creek (why they did this, I don't know since Krieg is German)
Because the translator is either a "freak in as old" or a chauvinist.
-
Dadan D. Uval. Lots of D's. TRIPLE D!
Oh snap, I just made a Lobster post. Someone pleeeaase, take me away. I must be cleaned.
Oh wait, Lobster wants it to be someone old. Still…

He rescued chopper, if that counts.

So, Shuusui's first use was freeing a past enemy that Zoro faught and defeated. Nice.

No, its first use was in a San-Zen-Sekai against Odr.

Actually it was here http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/470/12/

Delicate? He crushed a harpoon gun with one of those hands.
I thought Bellamy did the freaky bulge AND talked like an asshole. A shame the size doesn't match up.
Crushed a harpoon gun? when did he did that? I though tat was just a drink he was holding, his hand was wet..

492/07/05 he just likes to crush stuff.

So is this going to be a quick and dirty arc? Really seems that way with the speed eveything's being introduced. It could be the beginning to a larger arc, but it seems like this could be a throwback to pre grandline storyarc speed. that would be a welcome change of pace to the epic arcs.
-
Look at Luffy when he sees him, there is only one guy he is scared of in that way !
Duval makes me think of… SMOKER ! -

Duval makes me think of… SMOKER !That's interesting. We're at a point where there's no perceivable difference anymore between the jokers and those that are actually serious.
-
@Twilight:
Anybody notice that Hatori's crying in the cover page? So for those of you who though Duval was Hatori, too bad! XP
Actually the more noteworthy tidbit of the cover page is Kalifa´s robe. Remember that thing we know of her was that Nami ripped up her outfit appart in order to find the key for Robin´s handcuffs. Apparently she wasn´t able to get herself a new outfit before the bombardment started. Simply awesome that Oda pay attention to even such small details.
-
I still think Luffy's reaction will be explained with "OMG! You are so ugly!" and then …
"And who are you, anyway?" -
Duval is that one with whom Garp leaved Luffy and Ace.Time for payoff.But maybe that reaction is for "OMG you'r so big" or "I wasn't knowing that there is someone here"
Also It's interesting that Kumadori survived.After Lucci he got the most brutal beating:ermm:. -
Translation makes me appreciate the weirdness of the scene where Chopper and Brook randomly dove in to save Luffy…forgetting they too are DF users. Also liked the teamup now between Zoro and Hatchan.

And he wasn't surprised initially, so it's not some kind of shock factor from seeing a person there.
-

Well we suggest that Duval is Dadan.And most likely Dadan is Luffy's nanny from the past.I said so.
-
It looks like Oda went back to some of his previous sketches for these new Fishmen.
-
i have a feeling its don Krieg, the big body and armor really suits his style.. plus weapons.
-
Aside from trying to figure out who Duval is, how about weather he is really a STRONG guy.
That time he asks for anyone to do the "Zero Fight" maneuver by offering million in medical fees seems like a weak move. If he was THE boss, that all feared and bowed to, by strength alone, would he not just order someone to do it, not ask by offering money ?
Plus he is sitting out the battle giving only orders so far.
It is possible he is a DF user and cant use flying fish, which do have to submerge every so often.
-
The thing the most intriguing for me in this chapter is :
Who the hell Duval was talking to with the denden mushi!!!! I beleive it could be really important for the fishmen's arc -

I think he offered the "medical fees" cause it was a "kamikaze" attack, boss or no boss, most people won't go into suicidal mode just because their boss orders them.
And its pretty common for the "big fish" to stay back and let his cannon fodder do the fighting at the start.
-
Strong or no strong, he is a rich guy

oh,at the end,dunno
ps:where does that sketch come from?

Yeah, I agree with all the quickness of this arc, by the way, does anyone know the name of this arc?
Someone said it looked strange, or something. Can't remember if it was this forum though. Oda fucked up though.
That wasn't funny, and it didn't look strange!

^ shabondy ARC(hipelago)

-
Read the scanslations by FH. Notice how a guy calls Brook "Skeleton-mask guy". That may solve how he'll work around town.
Finally, this arc is getting interesting. Can't wait for the next chapter.
Captain Brooke, who colored your sig?
-
The thing the most intriguing for me in this chapter is :
Who the hell Duval was talking to with the denden mushi!!!! I beleive it could be really important for the fishmen's arcNah, it most likely won´t important for the Fishman Island arc at all. Duval kept Phone Snail contact with the Flying Fish Riders in the last page of the previous chapter already, which means before they attacked. Furthermore he still kept in contact while he looking for someone to do the Kamikaze mission. So he´s been giving orders from the very beginning via Phone Snails. And since the fight is actually still in full go it would be unlikely that he´d cut the connection and started talking to someone else. Simply put, he was most likely still in contact with the Flying Fish Riders.
-
@AWB:
Captain Brooke, who colored your sig?
He does it…himself.
And I'm pretty sure Duval was just talking to the Flying Fish Riders. If it was really relevant, Oda would probably have had him saying something on it. He was just standing in front of it when Luffy crashed in.
And does anyone else notice how there's not really any important opponents this arc besides Duval? The Macro Fishmen were totally thrashed by Hatchan in a second, the Flying Fish Riders have shown to be pretty easily taken out, since that guy with the club seemed to be one of their top fighters, the way they acted around him.
Hopefully this is just a mini-arc leading into the whole Gyojin/Ningyo Island arc.
-
@AWB:
Captain Brooke, who colored your sig?
I got it from mangahelpers.com, they have a lot of great stuff there, you should check it out!
@Impel:
He does it…himself.
Man, I wish I could!
-
I'm almost SURE Duval is a new character, probably somebody who knew Luffy before the series started.
Mainly because Luffy seems SCARED of him.
Luffy wouldn't be scared of Don Krieg or Morgan or Bellamy or somebody like that. If he encountered a past villain he either wouldn't remember them, or would just say something like "Hey, whats up?".
Has to be somebody new.
-
I think Duval isn't after Luffy, but after some other SH. And Luffy just happens to know him..
-
Random Thought Occurs: Is it me or is this the very first time we've seen Nami rescue Luffy from the water? More than anybody it tends to be Sanji. Granted, everyone else is a bit busy, but still thought it was worth noting that Nami has now made a Luffy-rescue of her own. I think this may also be Franky's first DF-user rescue.
He's not a devil-fruit user – so I don't know if this counts -- but Nami has saved at least one crew-mate from drowning before: in Alabasta, after the Rain Dinners moat caved in, Nami and Vivi pulled Usopp from the water. That was when Sanji saved Luffy and Zoro saved Smoker.
You're right that Sanji does tend to be the one to save Luffy most often -- canon or not (he's saved him in at least one movie too) -- but there's at least one time when Zoro saves Luffy: in Skypiea, when Luffy wipes out while attempting to use the waver, but Zoro's bitchy comments to Sanji after the rescue seem to hint that he thinks it's Sanji's duty to do that kind of rescue. In that same scene, Usopp saves Chopper from the water, who, just as in this chapter, has dived in to "save" Luffy.
Chopper has to be fished out of the water again in Skypiea, but I forget who saves him. It's when he's left alone on the boat. So it must be Gan Fall who saves him. I forget -- I'll have to look it up.
Oh, and Skypiea is also when Usopp is saved by a Luffy/Robin team-up -- which is an interesting reversal: two devil fruit users teaming up to save a non-devil-fruit user!
So yeah, it would seem like a rite of passage for each crew-member to save someone else from drowning. So Franky's that much more of a crew-mate now. ;)
[And thanks to the crew who bring us the scans and trans – much appreciated as always]
-
Strong or no strong, he is a rich guy
If he's a rich dude he don't need to sell his right kidney.

The soutbirds have rescued Chopper back then !
But I don't know how exactly:| -
@ultimateclima:
[TN: The "Nemuriuta" means "Lullaby". Lord knows on the "Flan", though. Can anybody think of anything musical that the katakana "furan" could represent? ~_~]
Well there's a Tropical Typhoon/Storm called Fran, that hit Japan a couple of times.
So maybe it's a reference to that?Like some kindof Lullaby Typhoon, <<;
-
I like Brook's speech about not being able to lay a hand on the enemy and how disgraceful it was to the crew. It showed how much respect he has for the entire crew, which is something we haven't seen from him before. I think that advances his character.
-
ps:where does that sketch come from?
I've mixed two sketches from when they're back to water7 and Giants asked ussopp to come to elbaf
-
uh,I wanst talking to you and your ava is not a "sketch" either.
-

I think it was one of the Tankobans, although I can't remember wich one

Well, the term "furan" can be Japanese for "franc" (フラン (n) (fr:) franc, from http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1E), which is related to Fencing. According to the "Dictionnaire des terms d'escrime" a franc is "Botte franche, coup de fleuret porté net et qui n'a pu être paré." I found this loosely translated as "Straightforward thrust, with a foil performed neatly and cannot be avoided/parried."

this havign WHAT to do with this chapter?

this havign WHAT to do with this chapter?
It's about the name of brook's latest attack.
Besides, everything is better than trying to guess the identity of you know who. -
Its Krieg!
