I can't wait to see this get subbed consistently. That ending tickles several faces of the nerd inside me.
Is there no opening?
There is one, but it did not appear in that episode

Open English is also there? I'm venezuelan, there are a lot of brazilians, and Redon is spanish (i think), but I haven't seen another spanish speaker in a long time. Late welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the welcome
About the opening in not sure it still downloading
Dany running around in flames was exagerated, this one is more credible, but that scene, and the Baby's face are important in setting up Dio's cruelty.
What a fast-paced first episode. Not necessarily a bad thing, but man, getting everything done that quick is a surprise. Really like the pop-out sound effects.
A subbed version is out!
Is it cool if I post the link?
It is awesome time. Downloading the episode, my body is ready.
Watched the episode. That was really well done. Looking forward to this.
The episode was good. The animation was jerky, and the sound effects and reaction shots overdone, but those are my only issues with it. The character designs are decent, sort of unused to the contrast from the manga but I'll likely get used to it. They did a really good job of condensing things while still getting across everything that the original manga got across. The voicework seems good, and it was a good move to remove that stone mash ceremony from the opening, it really adds to the mystery surrounding the mask. And they're just speeding on through, somehow there's even less filler than the filler-less manga. I like that, if the fights are also this fast paced they will be glorious.

Actually, the sound effects, reaction shots and poses make this very good for me. I mean, would you really be satisfied if the anime wasn't over the top?
I know nothing about this series, but after a great first episode like that, I'll be following the anime for sure…

I was fine with them, but then they went a bit too far. You know how a 5 second hug is acceptable, but a 12 second hug is overdoing it? That's how this feels.
@Mugen: nice to see that this series is getting more followers. Finally I'll have more people to talk to about it.
Since this thread is getting newbies, everyone should be careful about dropping spoilers, you hear?
Isn't Phantom blood about overdoing things ? It was the same back then in the manga. Overreactions everywhere, reaction shots everywhere…etc
I think that was animated perfectly. It was Jojo as it should be.

To a degree I get that, and I embrace it. I guess everyone has a different tolerance level for how much is too much. Also, Phantom Blood always seemed to be the most subdued part in the series. It was still off the wall, but compared to the other's it's really down to earth.

Per…fect...ly? I'm having trouble processing what you're saying. Did you see the animation? Minimal movement, abundance of speedlines, lots of momentary still frames and zoom shots. And man is it jerky. The most egregious example is when Jonathan is punching the bully, and when the bully punches back Jonathan's body goes completely vertical for a good half-second. punches do not work that way. Go watch something like Baccano, the come back and tell me the animation is perfect. I'm still glad it's being animated of course, but this is honestly some of the worst movement animation I've ever seen.
Since we were in the overreaction context (or at least i was answering that point), i obviously wasn't talking about the animation in a technical way. It was more about the feeling that you get when you watch the anime.
And that was…yeah...perfect.
That was just about as perfect an adaptation of Jojo I could hope for. This FELT like animated Jojo should feel.

Overall, REALLY REALLY good. I can't wait for next week. I'll be following Jojo weekly. I REALLY can't wait to see some of the great fights later.
Also, @Endless Strategy: There's a good chance that Sâuza's idea of "Perfect" is just a tad realistic. Jojo is a 100+ volume manga series. It's a little less than double the size of One Piece. if they intend to adapt all of it, they NEED to plan out their budget for the long haul. That means the big bucks get spent on the things that they NEED to be spent on. IE the high profile fights. You won't consistently get the same kind of animation you get from a 16-episode only series like Baccano on a series that is destined to be 100s of episodes.
Which sub release is everyone watching?
I have gg's on the go, but I have heard that they've decided to have the subs go nearly full cockney. I'm not sure if that'll take away from it all really.

It's cheesy, ridiculous and totally over the top - it's awesome. Nutbladder did arather bad job when compared to their Hidamari subs, but you can still wait for "Get Back Subs". They're a rather unknow group of Jojo fans and you have to wait til Sunday for the subs, but I guess they'll do a good job.
All those reactions shots, sound and visual effects were amazing. I don't know much about Jojo(I only read part 3) and I didn't think I would like the first episode that much. Does anyone know how many parts this anime is going to cover?
It seems like there are 26 episodes confirmed, which means that both Phantom Blood (Part 1) and Battle Tendency (Part 2) should be fully covered. I think they also plan on adapting the other parts should the anime be reasonably successful for them.
Well, judging from the
, they intend to cover everytihing. But as Nidhoeggr said it will depend on the feedback.is it loyal to the manga
Yes, although it covered a relatively big part and skipped some scenes. The scenes by themselves weren't that important.
It's faithful but a bit faster in terms of pacing than the manga. Personally I'm glad they removed the Stone Mask ritual scene, as it's more mysterious to first-time viewers this way. On the other hand, the scene with Danny felt rushed, kinda like "and then the next day Dio had burned Jonathan's dog".
Loving the ED too, by the way. Next episode we'll get a time skip, baseball and Speedwagon.
Gotta say i'm not a big fan of the visual sound effects either. It's like the anime is often reminding you "oh btw, this is adapted from a manga". It's flashy enough without that already, so i think it would be enough if they simply used an actual sound effect for those scenes - it is a different media after all.
Other than that, it was a good beginning.

I'm still sort of unused to the new character models, but on the whole I can agree with you.

- Censorship? This isn't really a full-on gripe, I'm actually overall ok with how they handled the death of Danny, this is mostly just me worrying about some of the stuff that comes later. If THAT was too much, how are they gonna handle the several other animals in the series that get attacked? (The Dog Death 13 kills comes to mind) or what about all the depraved stuff Kira does?
I'm actually sort of happy about this. I like Jojo, but copious levels of gore is not one of the reasons why. The characters bleed, and that's enough for me. When I see a scene like Ebony Devil slicing a face in half, I think they're going to far. A discretion shot would do just as well in most cases. I'm desensitized to it now, so it doesn't really bother me anymore, but I still prefer it that way.

I'm well aware, and I can respect that necessity. I just don't normally use words like perfect very lightly.

Oh god, I can't stop laughing. It seems like a group of dedicated Part 4 fans has blessed us with special DUWANG subs for the first anime episode. Perfection in anime form.
Back when I was a young child I was playing my imported Jump Ultimate Stars and my favourites were the badass Jo Jo Bizarro characters. But when I looked it up it was too old for me to watch (as was Hunter X Hunter) but now it's been remade I'm old enough to appreciate all of the themes…AND IT WAS AWESOME!!!, DIO YOU B*STARD!!!, I can't wait for next week XD
I'm going to be frank here: If the subs for the anime adaption for Part 4 are all in DUWANG style, I will die a happy man.
When the characters say they are 12 years old do they really mean they've been lifting for 12 straight years?
Anyway this was pretty cool though I may have to switch to a sub group that doesn't throw in the word 'tosser' every 5 seconds

Joey Jojo.

Didn't think about that,
! but Koichi and Jolyne are going to be amazing.
"It's like a face almost."
The fact that the image on that video says "Is Dio betraying you on me too?" says it all really.
I just watched the first two minutes of that because I'm at work, and I'm laughing so very hard.

If they stop before Part 3 it'd be kinda dumb for them. Stopping right after Part 2 of Jojo would be like a Batman adaptation stopping the episode before they were going to reveal Joker for the first time.
Part 3 is the most popular by far, so they should really at least get through Part 3.
I was rewatching it and I realized I missed this:

Despite Danny's story and death and the ritual scene (I think they will put it in some kind of flashback when they talk about the mask), everthing else is just like the manga. The sound effects, the poses, the scenes.

I laughed for about 20 minutes straight, but the translation of the ending gave me the rest. I nearly fell from my chair.

I wholeheartly agree.
I meant the finger in the eye… I remember that scene shocked me when I was reading the manga, they made it lighter in the anime.
I can't wait for next week...
I'm surprised how perfect Dio's voice is.
Just the right mix of aloof asshole and petulant child.
Real quick, I watched it raw and now I want to show it to a friend. I heard one of the fansubs uses British slang like "Tosser", anyone know which version this is?

It's such an odd feeling seeing all the comments in anime forums on the Jojo first episode.
"Dio is kind of an asshole"
Well…............ yeah........
He's like, one of the most infamous villains of ALL TIME in manga history.
Quite an understatement.
It's almost like reading comments of people who just watched Star Wars for the first time.
"that Yoda dude might be pretty strong"
