FUNImation used Oh Come My Way in the subs.
That's because it's what they said in the anime. That was not the case in the manga. Blame Toei.

Even if FUNi's dub is flawed, their subs are 100% accurate, which is what's most important. Can't say that for Viz.

Ah right, didn't know that. I was wondering why people were complaining Viz used it when FUNimation did as well.
Why are people still saying Mr. 1 was a plot hole?
Do I have to remind you the World Government operates on PROPAGANDA! They probably told Smoker that Mr. 1 was dead.
And if there's mistakes in filler… who the fuck cares?
By the way Mikey, I want the money Viz is paying you.
All this petty fighting over a localized product…
Sadening to watch sometimes.
Why are people still saying Mr. 1 was a plot hole?
Because as far as I know, that's not what was said in the original. It was Zoro "beat him down," wasn't it?
And if there's mistakes in filler… who the fuck cares?
"Who cares?" People that want 100% accuracy with the show, and those who are concerned they'll make more mistakes in the future. Right?
By the way Mikey, I want the money Viz is paying you.
@Mikey:
"Who cares?"
yes
Who cares
Oh well. I still think it's hypocritical, but whatever floats your boat.
Viz not only have a fair share of mistranslations and name changes, they are also not adverse to censorship as well.
This is why people give them so much shit.
Funimation are nowhere near that bad.
They have garnered some good will, so I can forgive them a small filler mistake.
Viz not only have a fair share of mistranslations and name changes,
1- Zolo
2- RogueTown
That's not exactly a fair Share. That's two. Two. In the entire series.
In other news, I got my DVD today, and it's official. Sonny Strait is the perfect Usopp. The way he reacts to the "ghosts" in the Rainbow Mist was perfect. No, better than perfect.
This set also made me really like Eric Vale's Sanji. The way he sang "Yes, sir, Nami!" over and over again proved to me that he's an excellent choice for Sanji.
Just remember how great he's gotten before listening to his Jaya Sanji.
FUNImation used Oh Come My Way in the subs.
No.
The simulcast's subtitles are required to use the same terms as Viz for consistency. FUNimation never used "Oh Come My Way" in their DVD releases, sub track or otherwise. The Alabasta arc has "Ballerina", as the anime was censored in that section, and Movie 8 correctly translates "Okama" as "Cross-dresser".
That's because it's what they said in the anime. That was not the case in the manga. Blame Toei.
No, the anime said "Ballerina" up until Impel Down, at which point they dropped the censorship and kept it as "Okama". But simulcast subs are a whole different beast from FUNimation's releases, since Toei requires them to copy whatever Viz does… which means that naming mistakes in the simulcast subs are still Viz's fault :P
If I had my way, I would've translated it to "Fairy," that way you have something that resembles ballet while also including a gay pun. But I don't run Funimation or Viz, so it shall never be.
No.

The Funimation DVD subs DID have "Oh Come My way" during Bon Clay's appearance at the Spider's Cafe. In the original manga, Oda had him say "Okama Way" (Crossdresser Way). In the anime, Toei had Bon Clay say "Oh Come My Way" In Engrish, which is what Funi put in the subs on the DVDs.
Just remember how great he's gotten before listening to his Jaya Sanji.
I've… listened to his Jaya Sanji ever since the first Funi episode aired on TV. I honestly didn't think it was so bad, but I'll see when I listen to it again.
@Badass:
1- Zolo
2- RogueTown
3- Merry Go
4- Chopper's "Boosts"
5- Portgaz D. Ace
6- "Kami" Eneru (It was written as "God", as in "Goddo" in Katakana by Oda, so this was a change not a refusal to translate)
7- They outright lie about what Mr. 2's jacket says.
And that's just off the top of my head.
I also left out the changes to the minor earlier character attacks (Like Kuro's) because they're unimportant and some of them carried over to FUNi.
But yea, there were a lot more than 2
4- Chopper's "Boosts"
Which are now "Points".
- Portgaz D. Ace
Which doesn't change much.
6- "Kami" Eneru (It was written as "God", as in "Goddo" in Katakana by Oda, so this was a change not a refusal to translate)
7- They outright lie about what Mr. 2's jacket says.
They're on their own here.
@Badass:

They finally fixed that? Still, they're wrong throughout the end of Alabasta (or wherever the change occurred)
Glad they apparently fixed it though.
@Badass:
Which doesn't change much.
I agree, but it's still a change, even if it's slight. I wouldn't fault anyone for hating this on the principle.
@Badass:
They're on their own here.
Whadaya mean by that? XD
_Hey Black Lantern PirateKing here. So yeah, Jacob and me finally arranged to do the whole file transfer thing and I now have Ending 9 in high quality. It sounds great, the mix is fantastic and Kristine Sa sounds so wonderful to listen to. I'd love to give it to you….
...but I have those exams to revise for, as stated in my sig. They come first. Plus there's no way i'd get all the video related work this in one night so you'll have to wait even longer for it. I don't know when you'll get, all depends on when I get free time. But at least you WILL get it because, you know, that's what I do. Encode dubbed songs.
Either way, it sucks to you if you want this right now._
They also switch around Zoro's Phoenix attack every arc. First it's Pound Phoenix, then it's Calibur Phoenix, then it's Pound Phoenix again. It's those little things that show up all the time that are annoying. Another such example is Franky saying in volume 45 something like "It's like Tom always said: do it with a bang!" No, it's do it with a boom. Why can't you say boom?

"With a Bang" is just as accurate and sounds better… why didn't Viz just go with that one all the time?!
That was kind of my reaction when I read that part.
First I was "it's boom goddammit!"
Then I was "…but bang actually sounds really good..."
Bang sounds better when it rolls of your tongue IMO.
The 'Don' thing seems to be a very good example of translation vs. adaptation.
Assuming that it's literally supposed to mean 'Boom', as in the sound effect from a bomb or other explosion, then Boom would be the appropriate translation.
On the other hand, "With a bang" is an English phrase more familiar to western ears and is virtually identical in both words and meaning.
I watched the first 4 episodes on this DVD set just now. Not all that bad. I really liked the Robin/Chopper episode as well as the Usopp Fireworks episode. Those were really good.
Before, I never thought an entire episode of a show could be about paper, but I guess I was proven wrong…?
And I laughed my ass off at the Curry episode. I'm sorry, it was just so damn random. "The Marines are famous for their curry!"
Lolwut?

A "Don" is a sound effect to denote a dramatic moment. In the anime, they do "Don" with a deep bass Boom
J8rjKCEMffc
At the VERY beginning of the video, right when the camera Zooms on the "Grove 24" sign, that's a "DON".
Hmmm, that kinda screws up the whole comparison.
Yeah, there's really no reason not to do Bang then.
I just get the impression that Viz is really putting the minimum effort into their One Piece translations.
Isn't there supposed to be editors to check for translation accuracy and consistency?
Apparently not.
For example, Rio Poneglyph is now Real Ponegliff. Really Viz, really?

Yes, really. It's not hard to deduct.
Regular Poneglyphs = history of something or another
Real Poneglyph = The true history.
True, real, same thing. It works.
As far as the glyph/gliff thing that one escapes me. That's just odd.

You forgot "Hebihime-sama", unless they changed that by now?

Well you know, they still ship early on most items there was probably just a shipping error on Funimation's part so they sent them to Right Stuf late..not the other way around.
Excellent.

Wow… Just got S2V7, and watched the first 4 episodes. FUNi made this filler (so far) good.
And Sonny is THE Usopp.
Ok, got V.7. I was curious to see if they redubbed the final scene where the ship falls from the sky. They… kinda did.
Well, they did for Luffy and Nami. Zoro, Sanji and Chopper's lines still sounded the same, though.
SO... I'm pretty sure we won't be getting a redub for the Jaya episodes. If that was a problem to anyone here, that is.

I don't think there was much wrong with Jaya beyond the edited stuff like Zolo and Merry Go (As well as some choice Lines from Robin)
I think we're fine.

I don't think they would recopy previous lines for such a small scene. If it were, say, those recap episodes, then I would understand. But I'm pretty sure they redubbed them, as it would only take a few extra minutes with such a small amount of lines. Plus, it would seem out of place having their highly impoved voices for 95% of the episode and then having their voices three years ago when they just started in the last two minutes. It's different when you're talking about an entire episode in between, though.
We learned from McFarland that they are going to at least fix any errors and such for the DVD releases. That means 4Kids terms that slipped in. I have a feeling they may let Eric and Stephanie redo a few lines if they decide to, seeming as those two changed a lot from the start of the season to the end. Maybe even Chris and Brina. Although for the most part I have no problem with what was done already. I'd like if they toned down Robin's bitchy tone though.
I'm going to at least start this filler tonight. I'll probably only watch one or two episodes though. But I should at least be able to start reviewing it with that.
No, Chopperrules, the audio at the end of 143 is the same as the audio from 3 years ago. They just redubbed Luffy and Nami's lines, but kept Sanji, Usopp and Zoro's from the original.
Yeah. I'm not throwing a hypothesis for this. I have the DVD. Sans Luffy and Nami, it was the same audio.
EDIT: XD "Tax collecting my hairy butt!" – Sonny rules.
Concerning the "last" scene in the volume being a copy of the very first one in the funimation dub. Was the collective scream at the end the same?
I only ask because what I remember in the original japanese was the end of the episode and the first scene of the episode after featured very different line reads from the cast. With the first being a chorus of absolute terror and the second being more of a surprised gasp.
Insignificant? Probably, I can't always explain my curiosities.
I'm watching the commentary and they confirm that the lines were pulled straight from the dub from 3 years ago.
The only reason they rerecorded a few of the lines was because the animation was partially different in places.
Also, Jason Grundy acknowledge that Sanji's voice is the most different between then and now.

I stand corrected. And surprised.
I know people like consistency, but IMO it makes more sense to redub the lines. Oh well, it's not a big deal anyhow.
Now I know for a fact they will recopy the lines in those recap episodes.

FUNimation does this a lot, look at their Remastered sets for Dragon Ball Z. Redubbing a few things but leaving the majority the same.

To their credit, they have apparently done a completely new (much more accurate) dub for Dragon Ball Kai.
Zoro said Dragon Twister. Hmm. I guess he just goes Japanese when he feels like it?
@ThegreatPirateKing:
I've been here since I was 14 years old, back in the spring of 2006. It's been 4 long years and i've had my fun but now, I am to leave you forever (at least with this name anyway…) until the summer starts. I may return as early as June 23rd but who honestly know?
@ThegreatPirateKing:
As I said at the start, this will be the last time you see me as 'ThegreatPirateKing'. I plan to PM the admins soon to request my name be changed to the one people know me better as: PirateBeck. I prefer that name as it's shorter and easier to remember, as well as being far less egotistical!
@ThegreatPirateKing:
Now with all that said, I will be leaving tomorrow (May 1st) at 23:59 my time. If you have anything you want to say to me, you have 24 hours and 58 minutes left.
. .
. .
Lol owned. Guess the name change did not work for him? Anyways I am glad I still want family ripped!
