Yep they just copy and pasted this description.
-
When did they use Fishmen in Unlimited Adventure? Also remember that they used Shichibukai and shudders Alabaster.
There's nothing wrong with using Shichibuki "Alabaster" now that's a different story.
-
They also didn't bother translating Giraffe in the game either.
-
that's an incorrect term for them. Oda stated it so.
SHOW ME WHERE ODA SAID THAT.
From what I remember fishman is the literal term but I dont remember either one being right or wrong. -
Alabasta's a competant romanization considering it's a pun.
Using Shichibukai is pretty silly, though. One Piece is not overtly Japanese.
-
So says you.
16 your opinions.

@Yuugi's:
Alabasta's a competant romanization considering it's a pun.
Using Shichibukai is pretty silly, though. One Piece is not overtly Japanese.
Alabasta or Arabasta are both competent romanizations, but notice the term in question is "Alabaster". One of those terms that sneaks up out of nowhere.
And granted while One Piece isn't overly Japanese, "Shichibukai" is not only a term that we as a fanbase all have grown accustomed to, but it sounds better than the "Seven Warlords of the Sea". In english it just doesn't have the same impact. Just as Yu Yu Hakusho got "Mazuku", Dragonball Z got "Kami", and etc. get etc., Japanese terms can eventually be incorperated into the dub and understood, but it works mostly for titles and names.
-
The dub often simply calls them 'warlords' as I recall, which is simple and accurate. None of the Warlords look even remotely Japanese inspiried so it sticks out like a sore thumb when the term is not even attempted to be translated. Note I AM NOT advocating Nami, Zoro, and Tashigi get their names changed, I'm simply saying it's almost like not translating Kage Bunshin no Jutsu to Shadow Clone Jutsu.
-
I agree, but I disagree that OP isn't aesthetically very japanese. I think if it weren't it would've caught on a lot easier in the west.

I'm also not suggesting that Nami, Zoro, and Tashigi get their names changed (although there are grey areas in this debacle, such as Kuma and Aokiji), but using Kage Bunshin no Jutsu as an example in this is a little different. Untranslated attacks have usually been romanized because it's a term usually associated closely with the main cast. Ergo, it's said a lot. We're going to run into this problem not as frequently in One Piece since a majority of the attacks are in a language other than Japanese, but this issue will be critical once we get to the CP9 and have to deal with terms like "Tekkai" and "Shigan", ones that are not only hard to translate into english scripts, but clearly lack the weight and have a legitimate reason to stay in Japanese.
Keeping a title untranslated isn't usually as harmful to dialogue flow, since "codewords" can take on a meaning of their own when referencing an organization (and I realize I'm being a hypocritical bastard for wanting Yonkou to be translated as "Four Emperors", even if that flows even worse). Dubs lately have been incorperating this policy into their shows, even for anime with little Japanese culture in the characters and script. If the majority of the One Piece fanbase already knows what a "Shichibukai" is, then wouldn't it be OK to let it slide?
Before this spirals out of control, let me end this match of Ping-Pong. I concede that translating terms are with the best intentions in the end. I accept your standpoint on this issue, no matter how context sensitive each new term is. I realize that most fans are stubborn beyond words and will probably not have their way in the end. All that withstanding, at the end of the day, I still just want Shichibukai to stay Shichibukai.

But I think the reason Dragon Ball Z used "kami" was more of a censorship issue. We're talking about an anime dub from the 90s on Cartoon Network. They couldn't translate it as "god". Just throwin' in my two cents here. =P And "kami" is one of few Japanese terms kept in the dub. DBZ really isn't a good example of a… good dub... that keeps Japanese terminology. I don't really care about the "warlords of the sea" thing. I just think it's kind of... long. =P I think FUNimation probably would've used the term "shichibukai" had they not gotten the One Piece license from 4K!D$ though.
-
I personally perfer using Seven Warlords of the Sea to Shichibukai for the reasons Y'sBM posted, One Piece isn't an overtly Japanese anime. If I was a first time viewer of One Piece and was watching the FUNi dub, if they said Shichibukai, I'd be all "???". But Seven Warlords of the Sea gets the meaning through to the English speaking audience the exact way it gets it through to the Japanese speaking audience.
I do agree that the term 'Seven Warlords of the Sea' is a mouthful though. I would hope that when FUNi gets down to mentioning them in the next set that they shorten it to Seven Sea Warlords or something like that. That way, it's not a mouthful and it's a little closer in syllables to Shichibukai so it can match the flaps better.
-
I'm pretty neutral about it; if they're gonna translate it, their gonna, It's kinda hard to know when to translate something and when to leave it alone. Naruto's an example of a blurred line; they kept "jutsu" and some techniques like "Rasengan" and "Chidori", but translated other techniques like "shadow clones" and whatnot. Who knows what'll happen with OP…
As for the Australia airings, I sure hope they work out. I'll be keeping an open mind just in case, but I have a gut feeling it'll happen this time. We'll see.
-
What about just Seven Warlords? It's a perfect match syllable wise.
-
I think that depends on the context. Like: "Crocodile is one of the Seven Warlords." or "The sea's Warlords?"
There are many ways to shorten it, but it all comes down to what Funi decides.
-
Just a quick som'm-som'm; FUNimation uses Alabasta. No "ER". Pretty sure it was the same in UA, but I could be wrong.
-
Nope, it was Alabaster in UA, which is why UA is not a reliable source when it comes to names.
-
When was it said as "Alabaster" In UA?!
-
I think it might've been in the translation where they called Vivi the Queen of it.
-
Work on that game was probably done two years ago by now, which would explain the funkiness of it.
-

I'm of the opinion that the series is genuinely weird in a non-culturally specific way, which is what causes it to have trouble finding an audience in certain regions. Not to mention the contrast of "cartoony" visuals and mild violence/"adult content" (by North American S&P standards).

Well there is news of Unlimited Cruise is coming out in Europe now. With this. Go down to post #161.

So its got a real good chance to come over here now.
-
Yes, but e-mailing the game maker is still probably not a bad idea.
"Look Namco Bandai! I have money I want to give you!"
Of course it should be stated more eloquently than that.
-
I'm scouring Namco-Bandai's US site right now for An E-mail address and all I can find is a "Support" E-mail for Defective Stuff
-
We should do an "Earthbound" type campaign to NAmco Bandai :P To get OPUC in the States.
-
But it looks like it'll be coming to the US.
Third VOyage still not on Best Buy.com… =(

You could have just linked us directly to the gameFAQs post instead of making us scroll through KF's awful message board. Nothing personal against the board, but it has a slow scrolling system… seriously, what causes that?
Either way, someone had linked that before I believe.
-
Your computer probably.
-
Wow! Now I remember hearing about how Grand Battle on the PS1 was released in Europe, it COULD be something like that. Who knows though. Still, even if is, it'll be much easier to import than importing the Japanese version.

It better. If Europe gets it, our chances of getting it are pretty high. :)

Sounds pretty legit if it's legit Diamonds. Okay, January it is.
-
Good deal, I hope it's like mid January
-
I am curious about the Alabasta movie on Blu-Ray. I want to know if they are going to just rerelease it or if they might throw the dub version of Compass finally. If there was ever another chance to get it right, this is it.
-
I just hope if the Dubbed Compass IS on there, we at least get a Rip of it.
-
Only $25 for the Blu-Ray release? That's basically the same price as the DVD, I thought Blu-Ray was expensive? Or am I thinking of HD-DVD? I don't have a blu-ray player, and probably wont have one for a long time, but if I get some extra money I'll buy this just to have it.

No Blu-ray can be expensive.
-
Well, it's good to know that we'll get it in January, although I still need to get a hold of Second Voyage.
-
Alright! Though it will most likely be at the end of January, its better than February thats for sure.
So will season be counted until the end Logue town? Ending at 4th voyage?
-
Possibly, but more likely season one will end at Reverse mountain, which would be fifth voyage, I suppose.
-
4th voyage will end in the Lougetown Arc. 5th Voyage will end in Whiskey Peak so 5th voyage will have to be 2nd Season because they will already be in the Grand Line have met Laboon, Croucus, and Mr.9 and Vivi.
-
They're supposed to be going by Toei's seasons, which count the Apis arc as part of season one. Therefore season one would end with volume five, not four, although it would show 3 episodes of season two. Or they could cut out those three episodes and show Special one instead, but I can't see them doing that, not even sure if they have the license to it.
-
Darkstorm, that would be so fucking epic!

FUNi never said they were going by Toei's bad excuse for seasons.
4 voyages most likely = 1 One Piece season for FUNi.
-
I was under the impression that FUNimation already described in the beginning their season structure:
Season 1: East Blue
Season 2: Baroque Works
Season 3: Jaya & Skypiea
-
@WTK:
- Release Date: 1/20/2009
- Retail Price: $49.98
- Running Time: 320 Minutes
There's our release date. Not really ideal, but at least it's better than waiting until February.
-
2 days before my birthday!
