Amazon has some of the shirts. That's where I got my Jolly Roger shirt.

Let's all just agree that the DVDs will be released on schedule and that a whole lot of people will buy them. The manga is selling well, One Piece's future in the states is stable. Let's just put the TV issue to rest.
I agree except where are we getting this info that the manga is selling well?
I mean, it's available most everywhere so it's probably not hard to find and does okay…but selling WELL? Not that I dont believe you but someone show me some stats plz?I rewatched the dvd today and I noticed something. MCFarland says he and Caitlin Glass directed the episodes in the first set but hints that they didnt in the second set. I havent checked the credits but that may account for the dub being a little stronger last set overall. Or atleast the "bad" Sanji this set. Even Sanji's dialogue is pretty different in eng compared to Japanese:
Japanese Sanji:So for just one more moment this place can remain a restaurant...(spoken calmly)Eng Sanji: Hmph! That's too much like giving up! (grunted arrogantly)
Sooo...are they gonna have Luci Christian again for the commentary next set or what? It's the first boxset where a new crewman doesnt join.

Number seventeen on the top fifty manga properties for the past summer.
While its not getting outstanding numbers, it seems as if it is getting some decent sales.
-
not bad… not bad at all, I was expecting terrible sales. :/
so why do they still translate it so ******* slow? >_>
-
Cause it's not doing good enough.
-
It's Viz, they release everything but Naruto and Bleach pretty slowly. Well everything in SJ. I think Dr. Slump, Whistle and anything not in the magazine came out pretty quickly.
-
This post is deleted!
-
I think Bleach is going really slow, last time I checked that is…every 3 month, and naruto is every 2 month, which is kinda fast
-
It's cuz it's the only one of the big three that they give a crap about, because its VIZ, AND its also the only one that doesnt get like 60000 chapters in on SJ, AND its the only one that hasnt been outside of SJ for an amount of time. Naruto goes fast because it gets 7000 chps in one SJ, Bleach gets 3500 chps in one SJ and One Piece getting the short end of the stick gets like 2 chps in one. And honestly, I think those OP shirts suck, except the Luffy one, Funi made those, but they were out like 3 years ago.
-
Naruto only gets a max of 5 chapters per JUMP!
-
@Yuugi's:
Naruto only gets a max of 5 chapters per JUMP!
That's still about half a volume. Either way, Viz's release pace isn't because they can't translate a volume in less then 4 months. If translators on MangaHelpers can translate 3 or 4 chapters of manga over a weekend, Viz's professional translators could probably translate (and adapt that translation, and generally have the whole volume ready) in about 2 weeks. But they don't wanna flood the market, so they don't release a volume a month. And because they drag One Piece out in the magazine and give it only 2 chapters a month, it takes 4 months instead of 3 for a volume to be released, because the volumes can't be ahead of the magazine. When One Piece usually got 3 chapters in the magazine, the volumes came out every 3 months.
Slower release paces is the price nearly any series (that doesn't receive an extra push like Naruto did, because it and One Piece were both around volume 16 or so until Naruto got pushed 12 volumes ahead) pays for the extra promotion of being in the magazine. The problem is, Viz has taken to not actually promoting anything in the magazine that isn't Naruto or Bleach, more or less. Really, I think every cover since the February issue (which was One Piece) has been either Naruto or Bleach. I know they're the most popular series', but what's the point of having other series' in the magazine if they're going to be all but ignored? If Viz wants to make the magazine half Naruto and half Bleach and give 8 chapters of each per month, fine. But don't shaft 3 or 4 other series' release paces to do it.
One Piece does sell relatively well (it's not a humongous bestseller here, and we can argue over the cause of that for all eternity, but that doesn't change the facts, it sells pretty well as an upper second tier series) but it can't gain popularity if one volume comes out every 4 months. People will lose interest, and sales can't be very high if there's less of it released to be sold. Whenever a volume comes out, it seems to sell quite well for a second tier series, which is sadly what it is here. So I don't see how it wouldn't be financially sound for Viz to release at least one volume every 3 months again.
It's the magazine. They're dragging it out in the magazine. Why, I don't know, but I hope something changes after Alabasta. Either give it 3 chapters a month and a volume every 3 months again, or just kick it out of the magazine and release a volume every 2 months. With some decent advertising in the magazine (just on the page where they tell you what volumes they're releasing that month) and in ads in their other volumes, I'm willing to bet that sales of the volumes would improve at least a bit. Sales of the magazine would probably be only minimally affected, and probably not even that if they divided the two chapters worth of extra space between Naruto and Bleach. The promotion gained from being in the magazine is no longer worth the dragged out release pace.
Well, that rant turned out longer then I thought. And for the record, why this isn't in the Viz Manga Thread, I'm not sure.
-
Well, Naruto and Bleach sell more, One Piece is probably still in the magizine because Shueisha dictates it. Heck, if TOEI controls how the DVDs are released who is to say Shueisha doesn't how One Piece is? I'm sure if One Piece was flying off the bookshelves then it'd be released faster but the simple fact of the matter is One Piece doesn't have enough action to the younger childrens' attention spans. It's an acquired taste that not everybody is going to be able to get, espicially if they don't appreciate 'finer' art, if you will.
Viz may very well be happy with One Piece as is right now. It's their money to be made or lost, all we can do is tell them we want to give money to them faster.
-
I've came out of the naughty corner to see what's going on. Don't worry, I'll behave.
So, how is One Piece in the US? (RomanGod, don't answer please)
-
I don't really get all the doom and gloom about One Piece not selling well. Maybe this is all relative to the Japanese sales. Regardless it is definitely in the upper echelons of Viz sales (#10 in relation to Viz comics).
-
Seriously, if the powers that be were unhappy then they'd fix something far quicker than they currently are.
-

Yup. That's exactly it. It doesn't have enough "action" and "cool characters" to interest the fucking kiddies… so that's why it is how it is.
-
Same old RomanGod.
I noticed your sig. Not everything was lost. I mean, the manga sales are manageble, I mean, like Yuugi's Black Magicial said, Viz could be happy since money is still being made. The DVDs are still being released, albeit on random dates instead of a normal release schedule. What is there to be lost?
-
TV deal, the only thing that Roman holds so dear and true without that im afraid there is nothing we can do to cure him :P
-
Actually, he never said, and the manga doesn't have anything to do with the tv deal. I've been getting it for almost five years now, since the manga was first released in english, and during a lot of that time, 4kids was broadcasting it on tv, but the manga remained as glacially slow as it now all that time.
In any event…this is the dvd thread, right?
-
I don't buy the manga, maybe I should?
-
Well….yes, if you like it.
-
Do it. The weekly scans don't do Oda's art justice.
-
I have been thinking since OP doesnt air on tv anymore maybe the reason it isnt and we have been waiting is that with these dvd releases FUNimation wants to make sure everyones back story is told.Like we already have luffys,Zoros,Sanji's,and usopp's,next is the Arlong Park arc with Nami's story.Maybe FUNimation is gonna let this next set go and sell and maybe they will dub the new chopper movie so we dont have to wait as long.Remember last time we heard they were already in choppers arc(so ive last heard) maybe this is all the plan…..that makes sense right?
-
Not really. The reason it's not on tv anymore is because the ratings were not amazing(not too bad either, but…)and Cartoon Network seem to want to move away from anime somewhat, so an anime show that's not getting amazing ratings isn't going to last long.
As for the DVD's, it's going at this speed because funi want it too, one would assume. I suspect it will get faster as some point, but I can't see getting through east blue as any kind of trigger, I assume it would depend on their other releases as well, stuff like Detective Conan & Yu Yu Hakusho is being released pretty quickly right now, I assume Funi only have so many people working on dvd production(I realise that the dubbing for Hakusho & Conan is already done up to a point, but the same goes for one piece, so I doubt the dubbing itself is any kind of factor in the speed of releases).
In any event...Just a couple of years ago I thought this point would never come...I'm just happy that One Piece has come under the auspices of funimation, who have delivered fantastic subbing and a decent dub at a reasonable price. Although I certainly wouldn't complain if the release frequency increased, I'm perfectly happy with how things are going with the DVDs.
-

Yeaaaah, because Death Note is full of punches and flying kicks! Death Note sells well to the highschool crowd and it's virtually actionless. Dont act like OP doesnt have tons of fights and action stuff in it, just the priority in OP is on STORYTELLING and americans demand mindless action in their shounen! ANything else is gonna have a tough time.

Okay, so, I was really bored a few days before the last volume came out, and I was thinking…, "Dang, I wonder how long this is gonna take to just get to Alabasta or something..." (or any other reasonable arc, I just happened to think Alabasta at the time). So I popped open wordpad and my calculator and made a little projection list--I'd post it but it's not really code friendly.
I estimated that if they keep constant with the release dates every 4 months, and the episode count 13, it's going to take until the year 2012 JUST to catch up where they started doing the dub during the Skypeia arc (about 2011 just to finish Alabasta). And to catch up to CURRENT, it's going to be like, 2017. And that's not including if Funi ever decides to get a start on the movies. (which really shouldn't take longer to dub than about 3 or 4 episodes). I think they're doing a great job, but really, if they don't kick it up I think soon most people might forget about it. If they were smart they should box them in bigger, half-season sets like 26 episodes, and then it would only take half as long...even though that's still pretty quick considering they have to catch up to 10 years worth of show, I've seen Bandai and AnimeWorks putting out packs of entire series like nobody's business.
My question: Doesn't Funi think it would get better profits if it sped up the process just a little? I'm 23, and it's going to be kind of sad when I'm 31 and going out to buy episodes that I watched subbed 8 or 9 years earlier (been watching OP for almost 2 years). And if you're over 30 now, that's going to make you almost 40 and buying this stuff. Which, by then, the series will probably be over halfway done in Japan--which will be really sad, since it already HAS passed the ten year mark. That's kinda depressing if you think about it.

Damn~! We'll be at Skypiea by 2012 at the rate Funi's going right now?! That's just crazy! I understand that in terms of length, One Piece has to be one of the longest shows Funi's handled, but I don't think they need to drag out the series any longer than it already is. They really should speed up the releases after a few more sets are released. If they were to at least start releasing one set every two months (at least when they hit the Grand Line), then I think that'd be a pretty nice and steady rate (Alabasta alone will take up around 2 1/2 sets and Skypiea will take up around 4 sets…for Skypiea, it would take 16 months to finish that arc...at 1 set every 4 months). The only bright side to the 4 month rate is that it does give people time to save up for them...I know that's lame, but it does hold some truth.

Heso!
I am still hoping that One Piece will land on TV somewhere. I have thought of IFC or Sci-Fi Channel. However if that does not happen I am perfectly happy to wait for the Funimation box sets. I do think that the speed of release will increase as time goes on. I think that Funimation needs time to sort out all the stuff that they got from Geneon and ADV this year along with all the stuff they got for themselves. I think that once things get completely on a roll with everthing that they have One Piece will start getting moved along faster. Anwyay I am looking forward to the rest of Baratie and the start of Arlong Park.
-
I still think you guys shouldn't worry about them releasing the series as lenghty as One Piece. If they succeced with releasing DBZ in the 2000 on DVD way after it finished in Japan I think they can pull off One Piece.

No, it seems CN are moving away from anime in general… In favor for more Chowder, Flapjack, and Canadian shows... (Though TDI is actually GOOD...)
Adult Swim as well...

One Piece will be the "DBZ of the new generation" by the time it ends. HA HA! Then the next Naruto will be making its rounds as the Anime king. -_- I feel sick…

I don't buy the manga, maybe I should?
I haven't bought the specific manga, but I do subscribe to Shonen Jump.
I have every Jump released in America, and I'd gladly trade them for the One Piece graphic novels and some extra cash :P
-
i dont understand why CN is airing goosebumps again wtf?!
Wasnt that show like hell of stupid and ratings were low as hell itself?
Also i still dont get what movie airng will do for them i mean they have their shows running all week why cant they have time to put anime on 1 out of every 7 days i mean what harm does it do? -

-
Death to CN. We should start like an internet wide "Bring Back One Piece" campaign. :p
-
Goosebumps was actually getting good ratings when it was on.
…
That already tells you the shit-for-taste these new generation of fucking kiddies have.
-
It's pretty likely that FUNi's OP release will speed up over time. Especially if OP continues to do well, in which case it'll become a higher priority release. It's all a matter of how long it takes for that to happen.
-
I think, the Releases may Start speeding up One FUNi gets, production Wise, to Ep 144, where Jaya begins.
They may just be slowing down the releases so they can get caught up with themselves production wise. -

They may just be slowing down the releases so they can get caught up with themselves production wise. This is possible, but it's also due to their massive amount of shows they work on. They bought so many titles from dying companies it's nuts. You should've seen the huge scrolling list they showed at Otakon.
That's why I think we'll most likely see releases speed up if OP becomes a high-priority title, which is pretty likely at this point. It was their #1 selling non-re-release at Amazon, if I remember correctly.

Why? Someone needs to say it how it is. I'm tired of people being wary with kiddies just because they're kiddies. Screw that. I'll give them my full on rage, regardless of age.

Is there any particular reason you feel the need to do that?

Because he's Roman. He defies logic.
-
i like how everyone complains that they're not releasing the dvd sets fast enough and once they come out, everyone complains that they're too expensive to afford and they're not buying them yet. If we got twice the sets we get now, how many of you would even be buying them?

Instead of trying to blame "kiddies" constantly, why not try and get One Piece back on the air?
-
Or maybe One Piece just sucks and we have bad taste?
-
Those fanboys are dangerous.
-
@Yuugi's:
Or maybe One Piece just sucks and we have bad taste?
Nah. It does seem that current childrens programming is a bit lacking though. When I was young, there was Thundercats, Transformers, He-man, and Voltron. A bit older, and defenders of the earth, centurions, and duck tales. blending into x-men, spider man and conan the adventurer. Even when I was at uni, there was Megas XLR, Dexters labratory, Samurai Jack, Justice League and the new He-man. I don't really see much of that calibur coming from the west these days. Last one I rememeber was Justice League Unlimited.
One Piece is great though. I've been watching it for five years, so it really better be. ^_^
