I think the best indication of his power is the fact that he always has to be CHAINED up.

I wouldn't be surprised if his opponent ended up being Juumonji. The boy needs more spotlight time anyhow, and a face-off against Ikari would be perfect for that.

And Shin doesn't break things on purpose, he's just so strong and clueless that he has no idea how to use them, and ends up breaking them with his brute strength.

Hahaha. In the volume that has chapter 100 (the special chapter with the 4-koma strips), you see a SD version of Shin trying to get a drink out of a machine, only he's managed to puncture a huge hole in it with his finger when he pressed the button for which drink he wanted. :laugh:

Ikari's strength is also evident when he burst through a door barred by 3 guys by punching it to pieces, and then drop kicking one of the Golden Generation.

I was surprised at his ranking in the other teams' test scores in that one issue.. he was well into the "smart" side. I was also surprised to see Rui Habashira (one of my favorite characters) there, but he was just above the average line.

Of course, Agon was the highest (ugh) and Ootawaru was last.

Hahahaha. Well, book smart doesn't necessarily mean you're general smart. Shin probably gets good grades but since his mind is fully occupied with football and training he doesn't really know anything else practical. :laugh:

Well then it did its purpose (remembered being led to that link even with Vol. 7's release in the US). But now I guess I have a better understanding of the making of that clip (which is easy enough to understand: Hiruma rolls camera and edits creatively, Deimon gets free chicken dinner :p)

Just wondering: if the anime is just as popular as the manga, then why did they make so many, er, creative/toning changes to the story? Sure there's no blood or crap in the anime, but I do wonder how it leads to stuff such as the reduction of the impact of the NASA game…or even lessening the impact/power of Shinryuji. (though Agon and Unsui at least showed up in the Ojo/Deimon game...or were they cut from that too?)

Wow. Yukimitsu was so cool in that chapter.
I really should read more Eyeshield 21. I've only read the first 4 volumes, and the two latest chapters. I watch the anime, too, though. (it's nowhere near as good as the manga)
So like, Yukimitsu's strength is that he can read both teams strategies, and figure out what to do just by looking at the situation? It's not too clear to me.

Putting him in was an awesome move, because from what I can tell Hiruma is completely throwing off Shinryuuji.

Agon and Ikkyu thought that Yukimitsu was a decoy so that they'd mark up on him instead of Monta, Taki, or Eyeshield, but Yukimitsu is competent as well.

So now there's at least 4 targets that Ikkyu and Agon will need to focus on.

Taki: An all around great and talented player
Monta: Genius at receiving
Eyeshield: obvious
Yukimitsu: intelligent enough, recognizes formations and what players will do.

If I'm disappointed with anything it's that the Haha Brothers haven't had much of a presence for the past few games. They used to be a HUGE part, and now they're more like decals.

Dammit, I want Juumonji to do more cool things! He's supposed to have the best technique out of the line, and maybe it's just me but I keep thinking that Hiruma is going to eventually groom Juumonji into becoming the new team captain for next year.

I agree, even though they had their moments in Deimon vs. Amino and Wild Gunmans they still don't get alot of attention. ( i haven't seen anything special about them in Devil Bats vs. Shinryuuji…besides from ch.179 )

I agree that Juumonji would be the closest one as the next years captain, he's the smartest and most balanced of the 1st graders. ( according to Baller's High )

I also wonder if some characters will change in height and weight in next year.....maybe Sena a bit taller and muscular :P...

Well, now to ch.180:
Even though that Yukimitsu-kun has an Option Route to take i still think it may be a feint when Hiruma notice that Agon and Ikyuu is chasing after him. ( however it may not be that way since i don't know if Hiruma can draw back the ball with his fingertips. )

Well, it was kinda obvious from the outset, even without Baller's High, that Juumonji is the smartest. Let's look at the 1st year roster: Sena, Monta, Komusubi, Taki, Togano, Kuroki, Juumonji. It doesn't take a genius to figure out which is the smartest out of that group.

And Sena already has been growing, the school uniform that was too big for him at the beginning of the series now fits him. But I doubt that he'll ever be seriously tall, he might gain an inch or two at the most. But turning into an athlete definitely did good things for his health.

As for Hiruma, I dunno if we've seen him draw the ball back with his fingertips, but he does have awfully long fingers.

if you haven't notice,
in the last few matches, the author always show the growth of one or two players, whom will be the key players in that match. it's not like that the huhhuh brothers haven't had much presence, the other players are the one shining.
this match, it looks like it will be kurita and yuki turn to shine.
but if they win this, who will be their opponent?
the gunmen, which have a very strong offense!
it is very likely that it will be huh huh brothers's turn to grow at that match…....
and for sena growth, we have to wait for the last game, against the white knight.....

im not a big fan of yukimitsu. I would like to see him fail miserably in this match (as should happen if he were facing players of the caliber or agon and unsui) but i know that will never happen because it simply cant

After falling behind, I've largely caught up with the releases out there (though I'm still missing 85-90, so any help pointing me towards those would be appreciated).

So far:

I wonder how many transfers Hiruma will wind up arranging before the Christmas Bowl (provided that they don't screw us over with a Bad News Bears type ending to this tournament). I guess it depends on how much dirt he has on the other principals.

Man, I hate Agon. Not in the good way, but in the Vicious-from-Cowboy-Bebop way where the character is so untouchable and blahblahblah that they come across more annoying than menacing. I'm looking forward to Shin folding him up like a cheap suit when (or rather if) the White Knights have a practice scrimmage with the Nagas.

Out of curiosity, how much longer is this series going to run? Just until the end of the Christmas Bowl or is it going to continue afterwards (possibly leaping forward to Deimon University or whatever)? Or has it been said either way?

It would seem strange any other way. Does Japan even have college-level or pro-level football? I don't recall hearing of it, but I could easily be wrong. I doubt that even Sena/Eyeshield 21 is enough of a success to catapult into a college or professional league in the US or Europe, and even if he did, many lesser but beloved characters couldn't follow.

I'd like to see a closer where at the end of the Christmas Bowl, Sena shows the world who he is, and then one or two 'denouement' chapters which show what became of the different characters. I'd reccomend Hiruma for elected office.

Yeah, it wouldn't be the Devil Bats without Hiruma and Kurita. Musashi is important, but those two are the heart and soul of the team. Of course, they could stick around as coaches or something to bide their time so the entire team could enter college at the same time.

Well, as an obsessed Eyeshield 21 fan, i want the manga to continue after the Christmas Bowl, during Sena's 2nd year.
Even though Hiruma and the other's wont play, they can still go and watch the matches and training.

The 2nd years are:
Hiruma Youichi
Kurita Ryoukan
Takekura Gen ( Musashi )
Anezaki Mamori
Yukimitsu Manabu
Ishimaru Tetsuo

And they wont graduate, they still have their 3rd year. It's just that Deimon High School don't permit students to have club activities in their 3rd year so that they could focus more on their studies.

Also, it's not over for Sena vs. Shin since Oujo also have 3rd year players. ( however, Takami and Ootawa won't be there since they graduated, which would be tough for Sakuraba. )

They played for three years though, so they should have graduated by now. Going by the school scouting reports, Oujo has a school system that is so closely interlinked that attending Oujo High School all but guarantees that you'll go to a university, presumably Oujo. Ootawa is probably an exception to that unless they have a sports merit program, but he's a moron.

Is Zokugaku is the only University team we've actually seen so far then? There was one university that Oujo's manager played for, but I don't recall the name.

Yes, the Golden Generation plays for Oujo University. Oujo is one of those escalator schools that goes from elementary to university. So it looks like, yes, there is college football, although I doubt it's nearly as big as it is here in the states. (note: the team for Oujo University is called The Silver Knights)

It's not a matter of whether they need to study or not, it's just school rules. so they're outta luck.

But while they wouldn't play, I'd doubt they'd just leave the team completely alone. Hiruma might stay on as a "president emeritas" of sorts.

i would rather see the series end with hiruma and kurita (havent read anything with musashi on the team but i look forward to it) on the team than see the series continue with them off of it but that is if it ends properly. If the mangaka pulls a slam dunk then he better get his ass back into the art studio

Ubiq: Eh, it's been awhile, and I usually don't pay a lot of attention to details like that, so I was mistaken. I do remember the Oujou Golden Generation wearing similar school uniforms to the current players, so I guess them going to college explains it. And I forgot the rules about years, I just knew the 3rd year was the limit for something.

I see a lot of potential for Eyeshield if it continues… but it could just as easily become cheesy. I could see Hiruma and Kurita taking cameo roles as they come in to help every now and then, and a new cast of interesting players coming in. Still... I'm still not sure how they'd be able to win without Hiruma's genius plans and quarterbacking.

Hmm, I have a feeling Eyeshield 21 will end with the Christmas Bowl. I mean, there might be a special extra-length chapter to show what happens to everyone next year, just as a bonus epilogue type of thing, but really the climax they're building up to is the Christmas Bowl. If they extend it it will be because Shueisha made them, which has happened to manga before.

This week's chapter was so endearing. Awww, Yukimitsu's first touchdown. Almost makes me want to put a photo in a baby book.

It may happen that if Devil Bats wins the Christmas Bowl or at least in a high ranking, the school will probably get alot of good reputation that will make them change the rules so that 3rd year may also play.

Hm…so far, i think that Deimon and Zokugaku are the only one who can play in their 2nd year. ( and probably Scorpions because they don't have any 3rd grade players according to Baller's High )

Although I'm only up to the NASA game, I think that the series should end with the Christmas Bowl of this year. While this story is primarily about Sena's growth and jouney, it is also about Hiruma and Kurita's "last chance" to make the tournament. Sure they can probably find a way to play in their 3rd year, but for some reason I like the fact that a manga series has a goal/finale to stick to and ending on top than continuing on and on for a long time long past the original goal is achieved.

BTW: While not trying to pay attention to current events (to prevent spoiling later parts of the manga), I did notice that Deimon will probably play Ojo in the semi-final of the Christmas Bowl tournament. (providing they get past Shinryuji). But as for the "final opponent of the series"…I know a little of Seibu and Taiyo with where I am, but nothing on the other two quarterfinalists. Which, if any, is probably the best chance at this moment to be the "final opponent" in the Christmas Bowl game?

Well, there is the possibility it will go into University or something, If I remember correctly, there was a Zokugaku Uni Team with Rui's older brother in, so its possible, although personally I dont think it will happen.

As for the final match, I'd say either Seibu or that Dinosaur team.

Hmmm...something in vol. 6 mentioned the Dinosaurs having recruited "massive new talent", but they were on the sidenotes just like Deimon was. I guess familiarity breeds content...so that's probably why I feel more comfortable to see someone like Seibu in the final match. (then again, all I know of them at this point is The Kid and Tetsuma)

! You can say that Sena won against Riku ( in speed ), even though it was only one time. ( i don't count the return as the first. )
! Still, Riku is proven to be the superior Super Rookie.
Riku has better power, technique and intelligence than Sena. ( according to Baller's High, he's as fast as Panther. 4,5 seconds in 40-yard dash. )
! Besides, his Rodeo Drive is like Change of Pace but without breaking speed, so it would be a Change of Pace/Crossover Step. ( i think. )

I can think of Dinasours as a Run offensive team, as it looks by the attribute
Dinasours (Run team) vs. Wild Gunmans (Pass team)
Still, i think that Dinasours will advance to the final, even if Deimon gets into the finals or not. ( since they already met Seibu, Oujo is like the main rival team so it's like decided that they will have a second match. )

It's hard to say. Normal shonen manga conventions would say that they will meet Seibu at the finals, but you never can be sure when a manga-ka will throw a curveball. And while Oujo is their "main" rival, Seibu turned out to be equal in the rival area, since it has Riku (Sena's rival), Tetsuma (Monta's rival), and Kid (Hiruma's rival). Besides, they beat Deimon, so now Deimon needs a chance for revenge.

I am really looking forward to seeing the Dinosaurs play. The quarterback we met briefly (Marco) looks pretty cool. Apart from being a dork by playing the "Italian Stallion" bit, he can open bottles of coke with his teeth. And I mean the old school coke bottles, not the plastic cap ones.

Personally, I felt we got the interaction between Sena and Marco that we usually do before Deimon goes up against them. Either way, I think we'll end up seeing the Dinos go up against their team (Taiyo, is it?) and win.

i started reading this because eggy got me into it. one thing i can say for sure: crazy sports manga. you can't find this kind of thing anywhere else.
