      Hi all,

I'm sure that other people besides myself use their Xbox 360 for playing music and media through an external hard drive. It's become quite useful for watching Funimation's One Piece when I miss an episode and end up torrenting it.

But here's the problem I'm having, and it has to do with the Japanese subbed version (anything released by K-F, Gerusama, ADC, Vegapunk, ASS, Instantz, etc.) When I try to watch an episode on my 360 (either in .avi or .mp4), the 360 zooms in on the picture by default, and I cannot read the subtitles. I have tried changing the viewing settings while playing the file, but nothing works. I CAN, however, change the viewing setting to "original", which reduces it to a very very very tiny resolution.

So to summarize, I want to watch the subbed version on my 360 (after all, I have an HDTV, I'd rather not use my 17-inch widescreen monitor to watch stuff), and the picture is zooming in to a point where the subtitles are cut off halfway through or almost entirely. Is there any way to force the 360 to correctly display these files?

I'm curious. I used to have an external HDD hooked to my 360 for the music, but could never get it to recognize movies. Is your's modded or does it have to be in .avi or mp4?

It could be an overscan problem.

I dunno… When I watched my burnt One Piece fansubbed DVDs on my XBOX360, I had the same problem. But that's because of my TV, not the system itself. =/ But what I could do, was press the a button to open to menu at the bottom, go to "Advance Setting" and change the video mode to 16:9 aspect ratio. It didn't "crop" the picture,it just slightly compressed the picture and put black bars on top. The subtitles weren't cut out anymore.

That's all I can say though. And I must agree with anyone who says that's kindif a crappy option. I dunno, that's all I can contribute here though.

the same happens on the ps3, ive tried on both. on my tv it doesnt cut the subtitles completely tho, just a little bit, you cans till read them.

other animes its worse, I think naruto is almost unreadable.

lol The subtitles for my burnt Naruto fansub DVDs were completely cropped off on my 360. 😆

yeah it's overscan, and it's the TV at fault, all TVs crop the image differently
it's a stupid habit left over from analog tv days.

back in the day all TVs would crop varying amounts off the image, so 3 areas where defined for tv production: title safe, action safe and the full frame. title safe is the smallest area which represents the image most cropped, so any text should be kept within this area for display on all TVs. and all microphones should be kept out of the full frame so the TVs that don't crop won't show them.
however seeing as fansubers either don't know or care about title safe area they put the subtitles outside of the title safe area

nearly all HDTVs have a "pc input" which is usually DVI or VGA. This input never crops the image as you would loose the start bar if you plugged in you PC. so if you got VGA just get the VGA xbox360 cable, should solve all your problems. or if it's DVI you could get a HDMI-DVI cable.

when i got my HDTV i spent a while trying to find a dvd player that could play divx/xvid files off a disc and had a vga out. the helios h4000 was the only one i could find, quite a nice player but as it struggles with some codecs i just plug my laptop in via VGA, saves me burning discs.

Unfortunately my HDTV does not have VGA or DVI. The best I could do in that department would be to buy an adapter.

sadly an adapter wouldn't really help as the cable itself doesn't uncrop the image but the input itself doesn't the image cause it's meant for computers.
