Watching anime is now fashion?

Well, this thing bothers me a lot these last months.There wasn't any related topic, so I thought about starting it.

I started watching animes on TV many years ago as all the kids did with some small exceptions.Most of the kids here stopped watching animes when they went to High School.I, for some reason didnt stop, and continued watching them at TV.Nowadays that I have kinda improved my English skills, I enjoy spending some of my time chatting in the net with other people about animes.
Lately even more people start watching animes and I feel that most of them doesn't really enjoy 'em or not even like animes at all.I'm taking about those guys who only watch Naruto/One Piece/Bleach (No offense if some of you do this) and believe that they are anime-fans.It's true that they are provoking even more people in watching animes, but I believe they watch only cause many other people do it. That's so called fashion.

I dunno if this happens at your countries, but this last year it happened a lot at Greece.I'm usually getting asked by other guys "If I watch animes", while they are talking about 1 or 2 shows, and if I answer no, they ll reply back that "I'm a noob, or I suck"

Well, I'm kinda glad you see this thing different.At Greece at least this kind of thing happens.And Mister Anbu, I'm at my last year at school and cept being trendy or emo, it became kinda fashion to watch animes.

And tony-kun the answer "no" was hypothetically, i said if.I usually say yes, but sometimes I change it to see the reactions.

Honestly, I don't see it as a fashion. Though I usually keep the fact that I do watch anime in between my friends.

I doubt it's becoming a fashion, but I do agree with you on that people are not anime fans just by watching one or two shows.

In my opinion, an anime fan is a person who…

watches several anime shows,
is up to date on the latest shows being aired (whether or not they watch them),
and is knowledgable (e.g. knows the history, what companies produced which shows, ect.).

Of course, by the very nature of my extreme definition, I have eliminated myself from being called an anime fan.

I kinda felt this way untill a few months ago, but it dramatically changed.I dunno why this happened at all.It seems that I'm the only one that feels this way and that's good. It ruins your mood to see this happening, i.e it's like you buy your favourite thing and after a while any dumb guy buys it cause the mass does.That's kinda annoying.After this I thing that the discussion is dropped, cause it seems to be my opinion on the first hand and on the other, whole forum's opinion.

I don't usually talk about anime to anyone other than my friends at school, but when I bring a manga volume I get criticized for it. Like they have nothing better to do than to see what Maikeru is reading -__-

Anime is just like all other media, there is good anime, and there is bad anime. I am not going to go out and watch chobits just because its an anime, thats not the kind of show i like. I don't really know any of my friends that watch anime just to be cool, although I know a lot of them that listen to certain music to be cool.

Most people over here grew up watching pretty awesome dubs like DB/DBZ and Saint Seiya, so many of them like Anime over American cartoons, but still, Anime is not something that you would like to talk about with your friends (Except if you're planning to introduce them to a certain series, or at least that's what I do; not like I watch/read anything beyond One Piece and some obscure series that I can find at One Manga).

You could actually say you would look PRETTY STUPID if you don't know who Goku is or what the hell are the Dragon Balls….

In my school it's mostly Asians who watch anime, with some exceptions. I doubt it'll ever be a 'in' thing for everyone in school beyond that. In my lunch table only 3 including myself will talk about some anime. The rest will be all "wtf r u talkin about?"
and my closer friend in that table hates anime.

I sorta don't get your question but I consider some one who is an absolute fan of at least one anime is an anime fan, and that will be the person's fashion, or trend.

People here don't even know what animu is, aside from a very small number of people (who just know it from Toonami/Adult Swim).

Yeah I really doubt watching anime or reading manga will ever be considered a fashion as you put it. Most of my friends know I read manga since if they ask I plainly tell them that I do. I make no big deal out of it, and I don't ever expect anyone else to either. I don't really bother hiding it since it'd be just a big waste of energy.

Shocking as it may be, I highly doubt people are biding their time waiting till someone pops up and busts said person for liking what they do. My guess is it only happens to people that glorify it like some elitist idiot to others that otherwise wouldn't care at all.

Only one of my close friends watch One piece. He says he didn't even feelt like if it was from Japanese Origins because he tought it was too fresh.

I'm more into videogames, tough, so it's not like I talk about Anime/Manga outside this forum.

I think Godzilla is like the only thing I like that I plainly tell my friends to better watch.

I don't believe anime is fashion. I don't think there is anyone who forces themselves to watch it either, it's kind of stupid to force yourself to like something. Anime is kind of a like it or hate it thing.

I have only read one Shojo Series, and I liked it. Of course, it wasn't like it was as similar as other Shojo series as One Piece is to other Shonen Series.

Oh man, I certainly wouldn't consider it a fashion in these parts. Me and my friends will often try to hide the fact that we watch anime because there's just way too much of a stereotype for fans. It seems stupid to hide something I myself find perfectly acceptable but I feel it would be hard for me to convince others that I'm not some weird otaku. Honestly though, if someone asked me straight out I would probably just tell them.

Not true actually, I know too many Goths that are only into cutting themselves and metal chains and jewlery, and they don't give a shit about anime. There's this goth girl in my highschool who is really noticeable because she wears cat ears/bunny ears to school everyday, it's actually pretty funny.
btw no offense to any of the okay goths in the audience, I just don't get that whole cutting yourself thing o___o

The only FASHION I remember was the Tamagochi fashion.

Hell, even the principal brought his damn tamagochi and told us to leave it at home with our moms if we couldn't take care of it properly between classes.

Besides that, most people I know don't give a damn about what other do, so it's not like somebody actually cares about leading others into a trend.

I don't think watching anime is a fashion, but it falls into the fad category. Fashion is a more general term that encompasses trends as long as they are still popular. Anime for one isn't exactly something the mainstream culture talks about everyday, not like we do as fans who watch anime consistently and talk about it on a daily basis. So anime is perhaps trendy leaning more towards fad, but not certainly fashionable.

I've been watching anime for a long time (since '93, though my old man has me beat). I've never recalled anime being fashionable in Chile where I lived most of my childhood, it just came on TV and kids watched it. The merchandising for the shows was probably the only thing that was perhaps a fad but nothing more than that. Saint Seiya rocked the 90's for me, those toys by Bandai sure were awesome back then.

Also did anyone notice how the late 70's and 80's anime was a lot of super robot shows? Zanbot 3 and Ideon are still some of my favorite robot shows.

I still remember that the Saint Seiya smelt pretty bad for being toys, but they were far better than the stuff of nowdays.

I watch anime, and i openly express through showing my drawings to people. I dont care what they say, cuz if they hav a problem with it ill kick their @ss cuz i know capoeira!!! YAHAHAA!! Just playin i would never use capoeira over something stupid like that.:D

I like anime and manga and I don't have a negative reputation at school.

Hobbies don't effect how people treat you at all really. Chances are if you're being called a "nerd" or a "kid", liking anime is like 8th on the list of reasons for that.
