After reading discussions about the Funimation dub, it seems that some people here prefer dub version better that the original. It's not 100% certain, so I constructed this thread.

I like the FUNi Dub.
I LOVED the original, but it's exciting to watch your favorite anime in a good english dub.

I love the original so much, but I've found myself actually thoroughly enjoying Skypiea because of the FUNi dub.And I was bored to tears in the original.

Funi is just… one a week. :xBut, it's cool seeing those scenes dubbed well in english. And Robin with an attitude.
So maybe the English version, once the uncut box sets come out.

I'm neutral. Despite some minor errors, FUNimation's dub is pretty much on the same level as the original. But like others have said, how they've managed to make one of the more boring story arcs seem more interesting is impressive. I still think I need to see more of FUNimation's dub before I declare one version superior to the other.

I voted for the Japanese version, mainly because the English dub is woefully incomplete (the 1st 143 eps. are 4Kids-ified & butchered, and the FUNimation dub is only now rectifying those 4Kids mistakes.) That, and I've managed to completely catch up on the Japanese airings.
I do love the voices/adaptation of the new FUNimation dub, everything just screams "quality" here. I actually prefer some of the FUNi dub voices over the original. So… maybe my vote will change once FUNimation gets the early episodes out & starts releasing those uncut DVDs.
Because at least now, I can watch One Piece in English with my friends/family and not feel so juvenile. :blink:

I always prefer the original version. For example when I read books, I try to find them on their original language, if I can understand it.
I haven't even seen the english dub of One piece.

Really? I find experiencing the whole picture just makes me realize how simple (I won't say 'worse' but it's probably the word I'm looking for) it is. Then again, that's just how it was intended…
I like both, but I'll say japanese just because that's the language it was written and designed in, so there are less inconsistencies with vocal pacing, puns and whatnot.

I'll have to say Japanese, but that's just because I've been watching it for so damn long. And I still feel that there's a certain "something", that some of the Japanese seiyu's have that the English VAs can't emulate.
Not saying I don't enjoy the english version though.

I will go with Japanese right now. Mainly cause of Lobster's reason, the fact that you can watch a lot more in a day, and the fact that I am a tad more used to the voices. It's very close for me though.

As much as I love both versions, for me it's gotta be the Japanese original, hands down. That's not to say I'm not enjoying the dub, which I am (and will be even moreso when the DVDs come around), it just doesn't give me the same feeling I get from watching the Japanese episodes.

Bzzzt. Gotta stop you there. With most anime, the vocals are recorded while the animation is being done elsewhere. Whereas with dubbing them, they generally try to fit the mouth flaps. Toei Animation is especially infamous for outsourcing their animation as they usually get two or three groups to do the animation (you can especially see it in certain episodes of One Piece and even the Dragon Ball franchise).
Because of this, not all the time will the voice actor's words match up with either the expression the animators gave the character or will have done some really weird crap.
For example, when Goku turns Super Saiyan for the first time and yells at Gohan to leave, we see him looking like he's shouting, but Masako Nozawa is speaking normally at first before jumping into anger.
Then we also have Freeza as he gets ready to kill Kuririn. The animation makes it seem like he's talking, but Ryuusei Nakao is actually laughing in the scene as Freeza.

I prefer the Japanese, but then again, I haven't seen enough Funi dubs to acclimate and appreciate it. Therefore, I'd say that I am a bit bias.

I personally don't see the "I can watch more episodes of the Japanese Version, so its better" argument. That doesn't even have anything to do with with the Quality of each version. Besides if you really wanted to you could not watch Funi's Dub intill after so many episodes then watch them in a marathon.
I don't think this is really fair of a question, at all. I mean we are comparing a waterdowned Tv version of One Piece, to a Japanese Uncut version. Though the fact that the Tv Version has so many saying it's better, kind of shows you how good the dub is.

While I did say I preferred the Japanese in my earlier post, I also mentioned that once the uncut bilingual DVDs come out, I'll probably watch the episodes in English primarily. Especially since there's no way I'm going to rewatch 300+ episodes in Japanese, I'd rather be re-watching them with an all-new English dub. Plus, at the rate FUNimation's dubbing/subbing is going, the uncut version will have everything translated as possible, no 4Kids terms, and all of the content, music. So… yeah folks, I'm a dubbie when it comes to anime usually (as long as it's not butchered & decently acted), that's why I can't wait for these uncut OP DVDs. The sooner, the better.

i'm from austria and i'm very okay with japanese original and english subs, because it's too difficult to make everything perfect with german dubs. sure it's great to watch OP if you can understand what they say easily, but i'm just not satisfied with the mistakes that're made in german, y'know. and I can't become friends with the english version, dunno why.
don't wan't to renounce on "SUGEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII" or "YOSH!", so I can easily deal with english subs.

I notice it less with japanese than english, for obvious reasons.

Funimation dub rules, and I really enjoy it (even tough I've missed the last 2 episodes <_<) but the original japanese version is what I've been loving for years, and I always prefer everything in it's original language :P, so my vote is for the japanese version~.

As much as I'm liking the new dub, I'm gonna have to go with the original. I still enjoy some of the original voice actors more than the FUNi ones, especially for Luffy. That and the humor used in One Piece is at times very Japanese and uses a certain kind of timing, so naturally the original actors pick up on it more easily. I don't really have the problem of needing to read subs most of the time either when I watch the original so the dub doesn't really hold any advantage in that respect.
This is not to say that the dub has not been great thus far. As time goes on I may come to like it just as much.

I actually enjoy the english version. As everyone has already said, it's nice to not have to read subtitles while also not flinching in disgust as I did when watching the 4kids dub. But the original is just too damn funny. I have fallen in love with the voices and the comedy they bring. And the way things translate sometimes are absolutely hilarious, in a very good way. It's a good dub, but too many things still sound too awkward and forced, and I won't ever love it as much as the original.
Do you honestly think they're going to find someone even 1/312^10 as good as the original Brooke? NO SIR I DO NOT.

As to what I prefer.. I'd have to say the dub. I'm finally getting to hear exactly how I imagined the characters in English. I think FUNi will do an awesome job from here on out.

I go with jap. One Piece is pretty culturally influnced and I guess fansubs not only let me take a nice peek into another culture, but let me enjoy One Piece…well, originally.

Funi's dub is pretty good. Though there are things I don't like about it. And the Japanese voice cast not only fits the characters better in my opinion, but has just SO much damn talent. I mean Buggy makes me smile every time he talks.
I think after 4kids, English voice actors are on a mission not to make the characters seem like excellent manga matching voices, but to try not to make the voices as hopelessly retarted as 4kids did.

Though I still think I prefer the Japanese version now, I would like to note how much better the voice acting in Unlimited Adventure is. Zoro's voice seems completely original, calm and relaxed as opposed to the deeper voice he seems to haven now. And Ussop's voice is much less like Kuririn's, it's more like his own voice. Luffy's acting and voice is also much more bearable, and I'm loving Franky's voice. I can't wait to hear the acting for later episodes. I might end up enjoying both on equal terms. Though Japanese Luffy's voice has a quality that I don't think the English Luffy will be able to immitate. I can still see the same character though, so it's fine.

When the dub is good, I prefer the dub. And in this case, the Funi dub is damn near perfect. Luffy's voice worries me sometimes though, since I expect the best out of the lead character.
The rest though, kind of feel like English equivalents to their Japanese actors, or sound good enough that I don't care. -

In the Japanese version Nami would get scared as well, but it wasn't like this. It's like Funi made her actual character dialog constantly pouty and whiny.
Like in this last episode, when Zoro's talking to her, she just says "Give up! I'm NOT going! I'm too scared! Leave me here!"
I don't know… it's just some of those word choices they are using just make her character out to be more of a crybaby then she actually is.
She should just be "Ussop level afraid", not even moreso.

This pretty much summed up my sentiments.
I don't like the japanese dub because it's the first thing I saw, hell i started reading the manga from Viz back when North American SJ debuted! I watched the Japanese version of Naruto first and I prefer the dub. It's just the Japanese actors are all extremely seasoned sounding, not to mention in japan One Piece is MASSIVE.
They know everyone is going to be watching their take on each character and expecting something special and near perfect.I do think, no, I know Funi is trying to do an excellent job, and for the most part succeeding,but in Japan there's just more respect and priority on this series to nail every scene, voice, character perfectly. I mean, this is a series everyone in Japan knows so you either have to nail the exact voice everyone's imagining when they read it or come up with something better. Not to mention, Funi had virtually no prep time for this and was in the middle of a ton of projects. Obviously in Japan, OP would be top priority.
And I mean, also in Japan they get to converse with Oda on every scene and what he intended and all that. Not to mention, most of the eng dub actors are trying to mimick the sound or take on the character the seiyuu went with. They have to try to copy the japanese guys instead of interpreting the character as they see fit, which can hurt delivery and tone.
Basically I feel the way about the Naruto dub the way I feel about the Japanese OP track. Everytime I hear a new voice, I go "Wow! Perfect!" That's exactly how they should sound and the delivery of that line was perfect. When watching OP, it's just another good anime dub and most of the enjoyment comes from the source material/i.e. the story and characters being so enjoyable in an unedited form regardless of delivery and what they sound like.
It is alittle disappointing when I watch Funi's dub for a run of the mill series like WitchBlade and feel it's better than the One Piece dub, tho. As much as I'm enjoying the Funi dub, I get the feeling when I get the dvds I'll be watching it all subbed again.
But let's wait until the next arc to really judge and see how this dub turns out. It's way to early to compare.

I personally find most of the Japanese voice actors irreplacable.
I find that the Funimation dub does the series justice, but I am not convinced it surpasses the talent of the Japanese actors in OP

Well, I'm sorry that Ms. Christian's Nami isn't the same as her Kaname Chidori or her Rico.
But, I have the biggest feeling that she's doing the best she can.

I always love a dub better when the actors try to create a voice that IS the character rather than imitate a Japanese voice....and that is what FUNImation has done with OP.

I dont agree with Lobster at all. Nami always screams her head off and reacts cowardly in the japanese version,too. I dont get his point at all.

The FUNimation dub is great but I'ts not like FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, etc. You know where there doesn't seem to be any reason why you should watch it in Japanese. I'll have to say the Japanese version until FUNimation gets a bit farther along.

I wasn't aware that One Piece was being dubbed again, so before judging I went to watch it on Youtube. Ugh. It was better than 4kids, but that isn't saying much. Give me the raw episodes any day. Or better yet give me the raw manga.

I usually prefer the English version. Being able to understand the emotion in English feels better. Of course, if the English dub is crap, I know what to choose.

I always prefer the Japanese version over the English version for any anime, but One Piece has certainly showed me that you can watch your favorite anime dubbed in English. Most animes scripts are not the same as the original, so thats a real problem for me, and then theres the voices, nothing compares to the originals. But, One Piece is different, I can watch it in English once in a while, like Full Metal Alchemist (great Dub ever!!), but I'll always watch my anime in Japanese.
