Figured this would make for a good thread.

Ever see a random character design that could've gotten a name, a cool story, and some badass powers?

The Galley-La company was full of them. I especially like the guy next to Kaku, and the guy in the middle with the tie/vest. To think ANY of these guys could have turned out to be CP9.

Then there's these 3 from Bleach. The gate guardians were awesome.

And then there's a ton of them in Naruto, most of the Chuunin examiners could've been used so much better. At least these two got a chapter to shine.

Quite a few of them had cool designs, but they were crushed easily by Oz and didn't have much of an impact aside from kidnapping Luffy.

He got a little more screentime than some of the other guys in the Night Troop, but for the most part seems doomed to just occasional popping up and help people out with his SUPER EYESIGHT.

He had one of my favorite designs out of Kokubourou's leaders, then he went and got offed in about three or four pages.

Ibiki Morino from Naruto, thought that guy was pretty hardcore, and he sort of got tossed aside.

I don't know if they can be considered as background characters exactly but I'd really like to see the Enies Lobby Buster Call's Vice Admirals in a fight.

Pretty much the majority of the reason I hated Enies Lobby.

Lucci was an awesome villain, but I kinda wish he didn't make half the Carpenter's undercover secret agent assassins. I liked them better when they were an awesome mash-up of personalities and designs in a carpenter group

I never really understood everyone's desire for Hildon and the rest of the zombies to do something. I though Hildon was especially sort of boring.

I was glad when Odz pounded them all into dust since encounters with them would've made the arc much longer than it should've been

I can see why you'd think that when he first showed up. But people were talking about him fighting the Strawhats when Odz was rampaging around Thriller Bark. Which is dumb.

I really liked the White Berets for some reason, although I suppose they were used pretty well, so that doesn't really count.

I hated the White Berets. The last couple episodes with McKinley's crew has just been torturous.

On topic: I liked a few of the "throwaway teams" in ES21 that really should have been expanded over the likes of Kyoushin, Amino or Dokupari. Ones like Sankaku, Jondanai, Noroi, Sengoku, even someone like Sado who was just there to be pummeled by Ojo.

Doesn't that Musashi guy from Gintama end up appearing alot in the Anime atleast? I remember one episode where he suddenly popped out of a sheet and everyone thought he was Gintoki.

I like that bald Shisengumi member who appears alot, but has no name irc and barely any lines. He's in the Candy Line Ending with Yamaziki even and always is seen in plain view.

Yea, Kishimoto actually used to be a talent character designer back then. These days, it seems like he doesn't even try.

And I thought Ibiki was wasted too. Oh well.

That double page is badass. And I honestly think Ibiki is one of the greatest character designs out of all the big shonen currently published in Jump. Interesting personality as well. Truly wasted character.

I actually think it's a good thing Ibiki got completely shafted cause had Kishi kept him in the main story he'd probably have given him some ridiculous sobbing backstory about how if he tortures people it's just because his father didn't love him or some shit like that.

Fun fact: A character like that is INEVITABLY doomed because it's too much effort to get tattoos that intricate right, scene after scene.

I recall reading Hellsing, and there was a girl with similarly detailed, all-over tattoo curses, and the author had mentioned "I hate drawing her, I'm gonna kill her the next chapter" or something.

His torn-to-tatters wannabe-punk appearance fit right in with the Vongola crowd, and it would have been awesome to get some more insight into the mafia world with him and the Tomaso family. Instead, we got a volume of agonising boredom and downright "what the fuck am I reading?"

Also, his girlfriends were fucking hideous and I just felt bad for him. The only win in that volume was Hibari beating the shit out of him and Tsuna despite the effects of the Desolation Bullet. Good times.
