I just felt that this thread needs to be made to dedicate the Macross series.
It is the only series I know that can put CG into good use, making battles beautiful and epic. Unlike Gundam, getting shot would mean wreckage, thus, battles more worthwhile to watch.
Feel free to discuss about Macross, and not the American ripoff, known as Robotech. :sad:

I never knew there was singing involved, though I saw pictures of characters who looked sort of funny in "space song" outfits, and never knew they were from Macross. Then I asked a certain imageboard about it and was accused of being a troll - no one answered my question. 
To boot, there's nothing on en.wikipedia.org either, so I humbly ask someone explain Macross to me, or summarize the first couple series.

As for Frontier, I'm a bit jealous. From the reviews, the first episode had better animation than any episode in Gurren-Lagann (OH MY GOD!!), so I was like "that's OK, as long as it's twelve episodes they can pull it off!"
Then I heard it'll be around for twenty six. So much for GL and Denno Coil being award-winning shows for their animation. :sad:
I really want to see it, but I'm too dang tired right now and I need to marathon Oh! Edo Rocket. But rest assured, I'll watch this show as well!

Story
In 1999, a city-sized alien spacecraft crashes on Earth, and over the course of 10 years the humans rebuild the spacecraft just before a fleet of Zentradi warships arrive on the hunt for the ship belonging to their enemy, the Supervision Army (See Protodeviln). Meanwhile, a young civilian pilot, Hikaru Ichijyo comes of age and struggles with a love triangle between a rising pop singer Lynn Minmay and a dedicated bridge officer, Misa Hayase. During the war that ensues, the human crew operating this untested alien ship find themselves alone in fending off the invaders. Due to inexperience operating the ship, they end up stranded on the edge of the solar system, with refugees from the city that grew around the restored space craft living within the ship. The malfunctioning "fold system", which usually allows rapid space travel, vanishes, causing the crew to take about a year to return to Earth using conventional engines.
While journeying back to Earth, the Macross encounters the Zentradis, who would do anything to capture the ex-Supervision Army craft.

I actually liked Macross 7 a lot, although many people don't.
Oh yeah, and personally I prefer the Macross Plus movie version to the OVA series. Although I still recommend both.
As for Frontier, I watched some of the first episode (but not all of it yet, because my connection is too slow). I liked all the references. My favorites were the people doing the hand signal like Isamu from Macross Plus and "Listen to my song" from Macross 7.
Oh, and besides the new series, the only Macross thing I haven't seen yet is Macross Zero. Well, I did watch the first episode. I'll have to finish it one day.

I really, really enjoyed Macross 7, despite their lack of guts to resolve the love triangle or kill important characters, things the original did beautifully (no wonder that's one of the best series ever IMO).
Macross Zero is probably my least favorite of the franchise; It's really well done and the animation is great, i know…but the new characters didn't do much for me and it seriously needed moar Roy Focker.

Although I can't say I'm a big fan of the CG stuff (for Frontier and Zero). I thought the battle scenes in Macross Plus were awesomely animated, and the CG in the newer ones just can't compare.
To be honest, I wasn't that excited about Frontier at first, but some of the references to the older shows has made me a little more interested. Especially when I heard the new singer character start her song with Basara's trademark phrase.

I'm pretty sure the original series is still the "official" version.
Although the Macross of DYRL is now the regular Macross design (in Plus) there is an explanation for this. If you watch Flashback 2012 (which is supposed to take place after the original series) you see the Macross, and it looks like the DYRL version, so it was probably rebuilt in that form after the series.
Also, Miria was always called a Zentraedi in the tv series. Meltrandi was first used in DYRL if I remember correctly. However, I think Macross 7 said she was a Meltrandi.
According to Wikipedia (which references the Macross 7 liner notes), the reason for this is that the term Meltrandi started being used in the future.
As for Exsedol, I think it was briefly mentioned in an episode of Macross 7 about him being a giant, but I could be wrong. I think it was in one of those recaps before every episode (you know, where they explain certain things before the episode starts). I think it just said he reverted back to giant form or something. Or maybe it didn't, I don't remember.
I don't know why he looks like the DYRL version of himself though. Wikipedia says (but it doesn't say where this comes from) that his appearance was altered when he reverted back to giant form. Maybe that's from the liner notes too (I wonder if those are translated somewhere).

It's in a recap, indeed, but actually it says Exedol never changed his size "for unknown reasons", that was confusing.
Anyway, finally watched Frontier ep. 1, and man, it's that impressive. Obviously it's too soon to judge characters or plot, but visually it's probably the most stunning anime for tv i've ever seen. Very promising.
just rewatched DYRL, its such a masterpiece 
and the animation pretty much beats all the animes we have today…
i wish more of the jenius family members get shown
How is a robotech a rip off. I mean aside from them editing it and pretending it was part of a grander series, it was a great localization for the time.
BTW I love the origina Macross, Macross plus OVA, Macross Zero and the second Macross movie. I havent seen the rest but Macross has never disapointed me.
Also, it's a children's comic from Japan.

Everything I've watched of Macross are random episodes and movies that are aired randomly on pretty neglected channels for pretty old stuff.
Ok here's what I think is the correct time line you should watch:
1)Macross Zero (horrible prequel IMO, tho Roy showing up was awesome)
*2a)Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (Loved the show, but could deal without all the drama. Still a damn good show though)
*2b)Super Dimensional Macross : Do You Remember Love? (the movie pretty much sums up the original Macross except it looks infinitely better than the TV series)
3)Macross 7 (has a few returning characters from the original Macross, go Jenius family)
4)Macross Frontier (Direct sequel to Macross 7, looks to be pretty promising)
5)Macross Plus (awesome OVA series, should've been a TV series though I'm still content with it)
Extra : Robotech isn't Macross except for the first season. It was renamed because Harmony Gold (I think) put together three different shows (Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada, which both happen to be completely unrelated to Macross) under one storyline so that all three shows hold a continuing time line. In Southern Cross, they completely changed to the ending from what was just both races getting along with each other to the signaling of the Inbit (their supposed sworn enemy) coming by the release of protoculture energy. Genesis Climber Mospeada didn't do bad as a stand alone show, it had some pretty good pop culture references (Like the show at Carnegie Hall) and a decent story by itself. On a side note, Yoshitaka Amano was the character designer for the show (Who also did Gatchaman, Casshern (TV), and Tekkaman).
EDIT: I decided to add Macross(TV) on what order to watch the show because goty has a point. The original Macross is still part of the story (DYRL is an alternate telling of the story, but it's still pretty amazing IMO) so it deserves to be watched.

No way, the original series is too much of a masterpiece to be skipped. The movie has obviously better animation and art, and the love triangle gets a better resolution, i'll give you that. But the war and its effects are much more clear and dramatic in the series, IMO.

Yeah I know the TV series for Macross is better and more explained, but I could deal without all the drama of the TV show. Plus, the battles were awesome, Roy had a much more memorable death, and the history of the Zentradi (as well as humans) was better portrayed in the DYRL. However, as a Macross fan, I must recommend the original series as well since it's still good until the horrible drama that happens after the war. Thought the show still had it's good moments that the DYRL didn't have, like when Miria set the coffee maker on fire on after she married Max or when Quamzin kamikaze'd into the SDF-1 (which killed the crew but Hayase managed to escape thanks to Admiral Global).

i wouldnt say the movie sums up the 26 episodes of SDF...a 2 hour movie just cant do that...and the movies has completely new scenes and clean animation, in fact, ill say its much better than the animes we get today....
but SDF shouldnt be skipped...
Macross 7 had more music involve...if u dislike the music, dont bother watching it

Yeah, i actually liked the "new" episode 1 better: we saw more of Sheryl in a longer concert scene (helping to establish the triangle) and the battle sequences felt faster and less dragged.
I'm afraid i won't enjoy the main trio though; Ranka and Sheryl are like Minmei split in two, maybe we need more Misas and Gamlins: you know, mature characters to keep it different from generic moe-romance series.
Somehow the minor ones as Ozma and Catherine seems more interesting so far.
