Tough choice this year. But Orange Box takes it, with one of, if not the best contemporary game compilations ever put together coupled with unparalleled value for money.

Out of games that have been released this year, I'd have to go with Pokemon Pearl. Sure it's basically the same thing each generation with a few things added or removed, but it definately lived up to Gold and Silver.
If I were naming games that I had the chance of playing for the first time this year (bought or otherwise), they'd end up being older than about half the members here.
Probably one of the funnest games I've played.

I haven't played Galaxy(yet), so i'll have to give my vote to Bioshock(for now)
I've put more time into Pokemon Diamond and Pearl than I have any other game this year, but Mario Galaxy is probably my favorite.
I do really want to play the Orange Box though. There are a ton of cool games that came out this year I haven't been able to touch yet.

My top 3 in order:
1.) Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Fuck what anyone else says, I loved this game. Had a good story that I actually was able to care about. I loved the plot twist. The whole making you play a certain way, and then screwing with ya at the end. Loved every minute of it. Then it also had challenge! Crushing mode was difficult and I enjoyed an actual challenge in a game. It has been a while.
2.) Super Mario Galaxy
I loved it. Was very very easy, but it was fucking fun. End of story.
3.) Ratchet and Clank Future
My first exclusive PS3 game. Was good fun and the weapons were a blast (ooo… ouch, that was an unintended pun).
Honorable Mention:
Portal in the Orange Box
Obvious reasons.

Super Mario Galaxy without a doubt, followed closely by Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
The only new game I've really played this year is Pokemans Pearl.
That and Zelda, but I think that was technically released last year.

I'd say 1. Super Mario Galaxy. What a damn fun game.
Runner up: Portal (The Orange Box). What a concept.
I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.
I have a xbox 360 and a wii and I'm going to have to cheat since all these games deserve mention.
Xbox 360: Bioshock
The atmosphere created by the graphical design and the sound effects combined with the story make Rapture one of the best and most memorable settings ever in a videogame.
Runner up: Mass Effect.
The guys at bioware return with not only a great RPG but also one of the best pieces of Science Fiction entertainment in recent memory.
Wii: Super Mario Galaxy.
This games brings back memories and extends the limits of the unfortunately dying platform genre beyond our wildest dreams at the same time.
Runner up: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
Finally the wii-mote works perfectly. Add great graphics (for the wii that is) and challenging boss figts and you've got one of the best games this year.
GAME OF THE YEAR: Super Mario Galaxy.
Did I mention that it's Mario, that it has some of the best level designs ever and that it's probably the best platformer ever.
Runner up: Bioshock
It's one of the most remarkable and memorable games in recent history no doubt about it but the gameplay could have been better.
I wanna say Halo 3, but I'll probably get ran out of here, lol.
I'll go with Bioshock, even though I have yet to finish it, but I know everything about the story.

Call of Duty 4 was pretty fucking good too. Better than Halo actually.
So in the end, my vote goes to COD4.
I'm going with Orange Box. Even if I did already own Half-Life 2 and Episode One. I've already replayed Portal, once with commentary, and I'll probably do the same with Episode 2, eventually.
I'd go with Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Due to the fact that I still play it a decent amount even though I've done so much in it. I usually don't like "monster training" games, but for some reason I like these and not any others. Still it's really good that you can finally play against other people wirelessly; it's something that people always wanted to do so that's a plus.
That reminds me, I should probably get some friend codes. Anyone here still play it?

Most definitely. Haven't been that amazed by a game since my youthful days of playing Majora's Mask.
If it didn't lose steam half-way through, I'd also like to say Twilight Princess.
Goron Mines was some of the most fun I've had all year. (Puzzle variety like that crammed into one temple is insane.)
Yeah, Galaxy isn't the best game in terms of gameplay, but I definately got an amazing feeling playing it I haven't got in awhile.
Too bad I don't have much time to play it as of late.

Galaxy would've been my first pick had the ending and final boss fight had not been so unsatisfactory. It was perfect until that point, So it's in my second spot.

Ah yes, one of the game's most impressive features.

The game was a complete disappointment, especially after 2007's AWFUL showing.
Haven't Madden games been disappointing since people started figuring out that there was much of a difference in the new games over the old, especially if you owned them.

I'm torn between Super Mario Galaxy and Bioschock.
SMG was awesome, but I feel there could have been more levels instead of comet trials(daredevil runs were great tho} and stuff. And Gold leaf Galaxy kinda pissed me off.
As for Bioshock I didn't play a lot of it and i died way too often.
For the record You're going to die alot in Bioshock even with all the upgrades acquired you're mostly going to die fighting Big Daddys or constantly setting off the security devices.
I'd have to go with Bioshock. It just has everything I want in a game and so much more. (lol) It's amazing.
Galaxy is pretty good but quite honestly I don't see why people are popping boners over it.
The only cop out is it's Prince Of Persia SOT complex

the only games to come out this year that I played and liked are gow2,mass effect and metroid prime corruption. so its a toss up

oh and persona 3 was good.
Yeah, Assassin's Creed was extremely disappointing.
It was extremely repetative, the assassinations weren't really very "epic" by any standards, the mechanics could get pretty klunky sometimes, and I didn't really feel an attachment to any of the characters.
