Funimation Constructive Criticism Thread

This is a topic for those of us who want to help Funimation make the new dub even better. Here we can discuss ways of improving the dub in a civil manner. I'm going to ask that if you CANNOT stand to hear anything negative about the Funimation dub, please do not post here or read this thread. We are not simply bitching and complaining over little tiny things. These are things that affect the series as a whole that we want to see fixed for DVD and future episodes.

This is NOT a place to complain about edits, names they're forced to use, or name we prefer (Enel vs Eneru) Please do not bring that up here.
This includes:
Gravity Blue Riders,
Endless Varse,
Wyler
Loftra

or anything else that might not have been brought up at this point. They will have their original names on the DVD. Toei gave Funimation a list to follow and Funi got as many changed back to the original as they could for the dub, but due to time restrains, they couldn't fix everything.

Mike McFarland asked me to gather information to help make the dub even better. So that's what I'm doing. Discuss it here, I will gather the information and relay it back to him.

lol. I find it particularly giggleworthy that both the "Kiss up to Funi for no good reason" and the "bitch to Funi for no good reason" threads were started by the exact same person. Honestly, I don't think we need a big ball of complaining disguised as a thread. It's too hard to wade through when the main overall complaints are :
-Sanji doesnt sound suave
-Luffy's voice is weird
-Robin sounds to bitchy and calls people by their names
and Luffy doesnt have mystery lines.
And EDITS CN EDITS!!!
Isn't it easier for FUni to handle the problem with each episode on a case by case basis and just check out the episode thread? Atleast clearly state that people are not allowed to repeat complaints that have already been posted.

Well…Funi is doing a nigh perfect job so far, just some small issues with character personalities that make them unique. Such as the absence of Luffy's mystery lines, him acting a bit too aware and smart sometimes, Robin acting a bit smug at times and her removal of calling characters by Mr./Ms. (insert crew position), and getting rid of signature character laughs.

Those are all the problems I can think of that seem to be in Funi's control, and I don't see why CN would object to any of them. Other nitpicks I have that are probably out of control are usage of 4kids terms like IQ test and Gravity Blue Riders, as well as some inconsistent violence edits. However, like I said before, Funi is doing a superb job, just it would be nice to have some things fixed.

And to kill this post with something on-topic, the voices for Buggy's crew kinda bugged me. I mean do they all have to sound gritty (the generic nameless ones, forgot how Mohji and Cabaji sounded)?

guys please don't complain about edits or names they were forced to use. Gravity Blue Riders will NOT be on the DVDs. And I wanted a topic about this because every time someone brings up anything negative about the dub in the episode discussion, they just get torn a new asshole. I don't think that's fair. This way, it'll stop those topics from being clogged with flame wars and I'll be able to collect the information easily.

There's a good reason to do both. This isn't a "bitch to Funi" thread either. It's a "help Funi make the best OP dub possible" thread.

We need a thread dedicated to thanking Toei, who's with me guys? We owe it to ourselves as fans of this wonderful anime to thank the studio that actually made it.

The English version of We Are was terrible.

And I still don't like Zoro's voice, but everyone else seems fine. Sanji is a bit iffy too, but that's it.

Other than that (the flashes and removal of blood, Funi can do nothing about) the dub has been excellent.

I just hope Eneru keeps his YEHAHAHAHAHA laugh.

because it was in Pirate's Carnival and they were asked to use certain terms for consistency. That's why they're also using Varse instead of Vearth.

Now if you don't have anything constructive to add to this topic, leave. I'm not letting this topic get ruined because of spam. You can discuss Varse vs Vearth and Blue Sea Dwellers vs Gravity Blue Riders elsewhere.

If it was used for the sake of consistency, Gum-Gum Pistol would still be Gum-Gum Blast.

Just because you take some weird offense to my posts doesn't mean that I'm not being constructive

And maybe it's not that the board is out to get you, but that you misconstrue everything as being some kind of personal attack and you have this notion of there being this bizarre conspiracy to hurt your feeling

Yeah, the English We Are was pretty awful. I know it was supposedly a rush job, but they could have at least tried to match the original. We are on the hunt? Seriously.

Most of my gripes with the dub will probably be fixed on the DVDs though.

Unfortunately, yes, this is what we've known about for a long time. To recap: Funi was given a list of names that 4Kids was going to use and was asked to keep them. Some of the items they got changed in time for the TV dub, some they didn't. One of the ones they weren't able to change was Gravity Blue Riders. I was surprised to hear it to, but it's going to be Blue Sea Dwellers on the DVD. All the names will be back to the original on the DVD

Neither one of those are constructive at all since
A. We knew they'd have to use some 4Kids names. This was known for a long long long time so just bringing it up is just going to cause trouble. I also asked very nicely for people NOT to bring up 4Kids names in here.

B. The second one is just … not constructive at all.

I never took offense to your posts at all. It's just I set forth some rules in this topic to keep order and you've all ready broken them. That's what I'm upset about. If you have something you'd like Funi to correct that IS NOT a 4Kids term or you asking me why Mike asked for my help, I'd be more than happy to hear it and pass it along. If not, please do not post in this topic because as I said, I would like to keep order here.

For those of you that said "We Are" was bad. Mike is all ready aware of this as he said at a convention that they were redoing it for the DVDs. So that one should be fixed ^_^

Why was Blue Sea Dwellers mentioned in the anime then? Doesn't make sense.

I think Funi tries to sneak stuff in. Going Merry was also said in an episode. Honestly I don't have all the answers. It'd be best to ask Funimation something like that.

Last I checked, this was a public forum, and she has as much right to post as you guys do, on whatever topic concerning One Piece. Why rag on her for that? Aren't we all just a big group of geeks enjoying the same thing here?

Everyone obviously will have a different opinion, and there's nothing wrong with that.

True but new stuff will probably come up as episodes go on. Like Robin's "genius" line last week. I want people to post stuff as the episodes go on. It'll just be easier that way to have one topic about it instead of having to search several

The part with Cricket's cigarette was kinda… wierd. I can only remember it popping up once (when he was outside and taking it out of his mouth), while other times he was like Smoker in the 4Kids dub (who I now expect to be called Chaser for the sake of consistensy <_> ).

That line, the few other lines that make Robin sound rude, and Luffy's "That's one punch he'll never forget" are the only things that really bother me. I dunno….it's hard to tell without having any DVDs for reference to see what's for the TV Dub only (since it was rushed) and what's also on the DVDs.

well I still like to hear whatever fans have to say. I've informed Mike of the "That's one punch he'll never forget" line and he IS aware of Robin calling them by her first names so I think that'll be fixed. Maybe I'll send him a other PM.. he's only replied to the one so I don't want to be like overloading him. I know he's at least reading them.

I see nothing wrong with the FUNimation dub, other than the edits CN imposes and some name changes used from game Pirate's Carnival.

Aside from the things that people have been pointing out as the episodes air… there's not much left to question.

Though I'd like it if we could get some "Melorine"'s out of Sanji though. I don't remember if we ever got an answer about that. (I haven't heard any cursing out of him either, but I'm not sure if that was because none have been used yet or what.) Sanji's been sounding pretty good in the latest episodes.

Funi know's about Robin's name thing and Luffy's mystery thing by now.

Tonight, I'm sure we'll see at least one thing we could point out for Funi to look at for the DVD releases.

I'm wondering if they're going to change terms directly said in the original like "Cloud End", and "Upper Yard". Robin's also a bit pessimistic in this episode, but it's logical so hopefully that will stay the same. Also, Robin and Chopper have a little cute moment together when he hops on the ship, so I'm hoping that it stays as is. Otherwise, we'll need to point it out that Robin and Chopper have had little moments like that since she joined the crew.

i've heard that unlimited adventure only has an english voice option, but having the japanese voices with subtitles as an extra option would offer a more complete experience for the fanbase and it's becoming a more commonplace practice in many games (if they can do it for dbz they should do it for OP), however i can understand if there are chunks of story dialogue that don't already have text accompanying it as this would involve the extra work of adding the subtitles but otherwise they are leaving out a much desired extra that would have been just as easy to leave in as take out.

The only problem with that is the fact that Funimation only provided the voicework for UA. Bandai handled the localization.

That's what makes no sense to me either. If they can restore all the goddamn attack names, you'd think they'd be able to throw out everything except character name changes. Gravity Blue Rider, Neptunians, etc is pretty damn ridiculous.

Cutting out some of the scenes that I loved in the original.

The scene where Bellamy says "Farewell, Strawhat!" just before Luffy smacks him.

And the impact of Nami hitting Mccinley with her Waver.

I wont even go into the IQ test thing.

I like Robin's voice, but I agree with Ao kiji that she sorta comes across as more of a bitch sometimes. Something about her saying "It's 5,000 genius" to Usopp pissed me off. I'm not sure if she said something like that in the original or not, but it sounded sarcastic and annoying when I heard it.

And GRAVITY BLUE RIDERS sounds like something out of Yu-Gi-Oh.

EDIT: Nope, that part seems to have been taken out. The fight was still done very well though.

Can't really do much about the edited version. CN has strick time constraints so expect time cuts.

but yea, alot of the complaints seem rather minuscule. Like obvious violence edits and not saying the EXACT SAME LINES that were in K-F's releases.

I contacted him on the Anineon DVD forum. I didn't want to quote him exactly as I don't have his permission, but I will just so you all know this is getting through to him.

Maybe this could just be between you and I as you collect the information, and I can sometimes address something in the One Piece forum that's already going on in The English Track of this website… Does that make sense? I can't promise that all of the changes will be made, but I can promise that I will look into them. Sound good? Let me know...

and please stop pointing out edits and 4Kids terms. There's nothing we can do about those

My only real suggestion is improve the lyrics to We Are. Tho I'm pretty sure this is happening already.

OP games are being brought over by Namco-Bandai. DBZ games are brought over by Atari.
