Do you think it was there to begin with?
For me, i think it was formed when a great incident occured. e.g. Pluto was set off and caused the one piece world to split 4 seas, and in between it created the grand line.

On the sixth day, Oda parted the mountains and the seas, and looked upon His creation.
"My," He said, marveling at His handiwork, "what a grand line of sea that is."
And thus, the Grand Line was born.
…What, did you never go to church or something?

On the Seventh Day, he was all tired from making the greatest manga in history, so he got some sake and drunkenly made Vivi.
I honestly have never been completely clear on how it's really formed…
Oda is never going to explain it. It is like asking where did humans coming out. We will never know. I don't thin it really matters wither way.

What hath I done to deserve this?!
Nothing. I was burning Vivi, not you.
You are not always the center of attention, LPS. Get over it.
The Grand Line was made when Oda said
<you know="" what="" would="" be="" cool?="" pirates!="" and="" they="" could="" island="" hop="" from="" one="" to="" the="" other="" make="" for="" some="" cool="" ass="" treasure="" at="" end!="">*

Oddz the nation puller > Grand Line…
@Kaimei-Karasuhebi:
Oddz the nation puller > Grand Line…
From the North!
Yes! This is the only answer!

Amen to that, and I also agree that the grandline was created by a great incident, that will soon start up again, for example, history repeating itself!
From the North!
Yes! This is the only answer!
Was not Oddz "exiled" or somethng like that? I would think that after screwing up the world and forming the Grand Line in his nakedness, the world would pretty much hate him to the point of kicking his ass to the north where he would die frozen…
My guess is that it happened something like this…
Once upon a time, the world was made up of two continents, one that ran east to west and one that ran north to south, and four seas. Now, on the east to west continent was a fairly advanced civilization; perhaps one that benefitted from technological advances brought on by the people we know today as Skypieans/Jayans/Bilcans.
As time went by, the peoples of certain other nations became jealous of this country and began to plot against it. As part of this plot, they developed nine great instruments of destruction and unleashed them against their enemies. Unfortunately, the destructive capabilities of these Ancient Weapons combined with whatever defenses the Unknown Country possessed wound up shattering their entire continent.
The east to west continent collapsed, the seas flowed into the fractured landscape, and a new, fifth sea was formed. So the former continent was changed into an archipelago with most of the islands devastated and barren. However, one island was spared most of the destruction and began to assist their neighbors in rebuilding a new world. It was widely believed that this island being spared was a sign of divine protection and the nation of Mariejoa came be called a Holy Land.
Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the continent, at the former intersection of the two great landmasses, the forces that created the Grand Line forced the land farther up and created a new mountain that contains a small sea containing a small island that won't be discovered for centuries to come.
My guess would be based on either one of two things:
1 - Its a natural formation. Don't know what to say, but it gives a lot of mystery about the world so I can't take this any further.
2 - Its unaturally formed. Someone shaped the world into what it is, maybe to control it. But generally, the peoples in the four blues don't have a clue on what happens down the middle lane of their world that seperates them, maybe their a little shy on each other too. But from the looks of things, if the world wasn't a natural formation then someone is trying to keep things away from people. Think about it, the greatest prize seems to be whats on Raftel, one of the hardest places to reach in the world down that middle lane with only person ever comfirming it existed. If that isn't a little be suspicious then I don't know what is. :wassat:
^^ its like why is our world so formed …..............:getlost:and everybody should now cause the continents splittet etc..etc(go to your teacher if you don
t know and the ones who are out of school and dont know that...go back or read a book:tongue:) ---so must also be the grandline formed--- don
t think they bombed that with an ancient weapon:getlost:
but at the end it`s so cause oda needed a place were noone could easily escape(thatswhy a calm belt exists) and where every strong pirat etc travels(thatswhy they need a logport cause you must travel one of 7 routs..or use many eternal prots hehe)....or the SH had to travel around a whole world many times, to find some guys to fight against...
Because otherwise the strawhats could just directly sail to the end of the grand line bypassing all the vicious traps Oda has set for them.

Muahaha, just too great
About the things that Ubiq said: I think that the ancient weapons were made by the bosses of the moon people and suddenly unleashed by some traitors between their ranks
One of the weapons control the way of how the logs works and it is in the hands of the renegades
After the destruction of the great continent the consequences allowed that people gain the enough power to control most of the destroyed world and ascend to the highest

i LOL'd at that one!

true that.
on the first day (G)Oda decided to create four seas instead of one, so that the people would have less environment to explore

Oh my…..God
…............Oda
Truly this is a sign!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will start the religeon of Oda-ism!!!!

I really like your theory! yeah technically the reason for the grandline is that nobody reaches the one piece without a shitload of adventures before. but why not have a cool story connected to it?
I like the idea that the op-world once used to be advanced.
After reading this thread I began to wonder if someone or something cut their planet in half during the missing hundred years and then someone else put the Red Line there to keep it in one piece.
I think it's just a natural part of that world. Asking where it came from is like asking how the oceans came about in our world. There's many rumors and whatnot, but we can't know for sure.
After drinking about eighteen billion barrels of rum, Gol D. Roger took a gigantic piss that flooded the entire world.
The planet was so flabbergasted by his awesome prowess that the magnetic fields got all screwed up.
and the calm belts?
and the calm belts?
As he was peeing, he also ejaculated a little. That's why there's so many Sea Kings there. They're his half fish, half Pirate King offspring.
@Impel:

And what about the mermaids, Impeldown? XD
I really want to see if the great war has something to do with the moonpeople, I ´m pretty sure that there was a gigantic war causing the land to shatter in pieces and creating all those islands in the sea… maybe the one piece is a map that reveals that the world was in fact One piece!! ( okay i´m talking shit here but I hope i doesn´t bother you XD)
There must be machines below the Grand Line, something that causes the zero flow at the calm belts and the messed up magnetic fields. Think about a Mechanical Stairs or some crap like that.
It's by (D)avy's will that the Grand Line formed.
That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.
Well some time ago, I dunno 10 years back. a dude named oda created one piece and there were some ideas of the oceans pirates would venture into, and one of those great oceans was the GrandLine. The End.
