So um…for the longest time, I've always been able to shut the computer off and turn it back on and the DSL stayed connected, but now I have to manually connect through the broadband icon once the computer is restarted. I have triple checked every possible checkbox regarding anything to do with passwords and connections and I just can't figure out how this suddenly changed. 😕

What DSL company do you use?

A semi similar probelm happened to me, and maybe I can help.

          AT&T Yahoo DSL, formerly SBCGlobal…
Maybe it can only work when I have a network set up?
When I set my dad's internet up on his new computer recently with the same provider, no problem, always connected. I don't think I'm suddenly doing anything different.

            Hmmm….

The best advice I can give you is call them up. I have the same DSL provider, and they helped me when I called them up. If you dont have good knowledge of computers, I would suggest it.

The green lights on my box would usedgreen and red every 5 min-10 min. and would not come back for 3 min. I got tired of this problem, so I finally decided to call them up. Turns out my outside wiring was messed up. They came, fixed it, and my computers are working better than ever.

Point is, calling helps a lot. ESPECIALLY if you KNOW havent done ANYTHING that would modify/corrupt your connection/settings. You havent typed in your IP address and changed the settings in the Homeportal page have you?

There's usually an option on this page somewhere that lets you switch your "always on" connection on. I don't know if its the same for everyone though. Your DSL modem should have PPPoE light, correct? If its not on you might want to check that page to see if there are any settings that can help you.

One guy at D-Link had me change the default gateway, but it was still working the way I wanted it to for some time after that…also, I tried this on a second computer which I know for certain hasn't been altered in any way and the same situation occurred. I guess what I should try is checking my dad's computer's settings, since it's staying connected there.

And I did call the ISP...they couldn't help. 😕 Most tech support people I get a hold of are idiots. It's probably something a lot more simple in the initial setup that I'm just thinking too hard to figure it out.

DSL's Garbage and so is their tech support. Switch to cable. And I'm not just saying that because I work for the cable company.

Anyway, since it seems to be happening on multiple computers, the router is probably at fault. I'd upgrade the firmware for the router, as well as check the DSL filters. I'd also go into your browser and check for any default dialup connections. If you use IE, you go to:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab, and check the box for dialup or VPN connections.

You should also check the LAN settings for any proxy settings.

Is the computer not having the problem (your father's computer) A hardwired or wireless connection?

I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

I would if I could, but I can't. I'm using someone else's connection and I can't afford to pay for cable hooked up just for me.

Well, I meant it's happening on multiple computers that aren't connected by a router…I disconnected the router a while ago and just moved the modem from one computer to another. The firmware was the latest version, though, and I had checked all those other things.

=Is the computer not having the problem (your father's computer) A hardwired or wireless connection?

hardwired, to the same kind of modem, same ISP.

One of the biggest problems with any modem is that it has to be reset whenever a new host is connected to it (Router or another computer). It's retarded, but the technology doesn't exist for the modem to drop the IP address unless it's powered down and powered back up.

Barring that, you might need to reset the winsock on the two computers that aren't working.

                      To do that:

Go to Start, Run, type CMD and hit enter to pull up the command prompt.

then type: Netsh winsock reset catalog, and hit enter

I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

Well, thanks for the assistance, though it seems that since I got the new modem/router combo today and configured it with their setup CD, it's all back to normal now. 🙂
