Monster Hunter for PS2 was the only online type game I've ever really enjoyed.
But I didn't even play the online mode. I stopped playing though after I realized you could only get most of the cool stuff by being online.
I never played the games, but I always thought they looked cool.

Real question: do you have to use swords?
Nah.
If I remember correctly, these are the different "types" of weapons.
Great Sword
Lances
Heavy and Light bows
Short swords (just a small sword and shiel)
Double Swords.
Hammers
Those are what I remember from the original game. Monster Hunter 2 added some more.
katana
Horns
Gunlances
And I think the last type was some sort of ranged weapon.
Might seem repetitive with stuff (as picture the same attack animation for a lot of weapons but with different visual effects), but it's lots of fun gathering materials to make the next best thing.

Despite no gameplay, I found it still very awesome to hear the the theme kick in.
This NEEEEEDS to come to America!! They screwed us over with Monster Hunter G and 2!! Sure they released them as Freedom and Freedom 2 on PSP, but I'd prefer them on the original system!
If ANYTHING, they should release it here in the states as "Monster Hunter Freedom 3" on the Wii…I mean the Freedom games were some of the most popular PSP games, so I don't see why not. D=
Also...I wonder how many types of new weapons they'll add. o___O I also hope they keep all the monsters from the previous games also, as well as their coloured variations (and maybe give the Elder Dragons more colour variations. XD)

It's cool that the Wii is getting Monster Hunter 3, though I'm really not familiar with the series.
I just don't think putting the exclusive tag on it is much of a big deal since it probably won't stay exclusive to the Wii since it's Capcom. I mean look at RE4 and Viewtiful Joe.

MHF2 for PSP owned my soul and the only reason I'm still not playing it INTO THE GROUND is because I literally have no one to play it with and the kind of farming I'd have to do alone to progress would just be murder.

Apparently, Capcom is charging Japanese Wii owners a monthly subscription fee in order to play this game online (a-la most MMORPGs). It'll be roughly $8 for 30 days, $15 for for 60 days, and $20 for 90 days. Not that bad of a scaling payment system, actually.

And Greg… you know about XLink Kai, right? The online service that lets your PSP hook up to a network adapter and play MHF2 online? I've only used it to link up with my regular playing partners while we're all at different universities, but it works fine.
EDIT: Ichnob, that Kotaku article is about the Wii remake of Monster Hunter G, not Monster Hunter 3. Still, that news indicates that a subscription fee for Monster Hunter 3 is very, very likely.

…are you serious that you didn't know what it was? It's been out since around the time of the US PSP release (can play any ad-hoc games using the router as a "middle-man").

I have a save file of about 160 hours in the American version of MHF2. I've beaten every monster in the game except for Akantor and Fatalis, but right now I'm grinding some Rathalos for an armor set I'm making. I still have a lot of stuff to do in the game, especially since I've barely touched the training fights.

Just played the Monster Hunter 3 demo on the Wii and it's awesome. It's so beautiful.
The demo is bundled with the Monster Hunter G Wii, for those who are wondering.
Only 2 quests included in the demo.
Hammer, Giant Sword, Sword n Shield, Heavybow and Lightbow are the only weapons availiable in it.
I wish they included the new Axe weapon type in the demo.

I actually don't have Monster Hunter G, only obtained a copy of the Monster Hunter Tri Demo.
I don't think Monster Hunter Freedom Unite will have online, so you're only option will be Ad-hoc Party with the PS3 or XLink Kai.

In Japan, for every version that had online there was Pay2Play Online mode.
MH1 in English was free though.
MHG and MH2 never made it out of Japan.
PSP ports never had online but with tricks, it was emulated.
MH3 will have Pay2Play status. No word on the English release of MH3 yet.
