This was announced back in July and I didn't even hear about it until now?
Nintendo needs to speak up about this, it looks damn good.
Yeah I didn't know it existed until a few moments ago
Judging from the tiny portraits during some of the skirmishes, we can see some of the COs. It looks like several of them will be grizzled and awesome, which suits me perfectly
Yeah, the COs so far look good, I'm getting more and more interested in this game by the minute. It's really got that great post-apocalyptic feel. Just the feel of it kind of reminds me of that Disaster: Day of Crisis game.
holy fucking shit! That looks so awesome XD Lets hope some of these new characters are pretty good too, I couldn't like most of the new ones last time >.<
Yeah, this game actually getting a big announcement (I think it was shown back at some European game show and July so a lot of people didn't know) made me go back and play the first Advance Wars DS again. Man, I only had 82 medals. That's still a lot of work to do..
Oh wow.
Game's mood is completely different.
Expecting bright and cheery Andy and Co, and see these gruff dudes looking like they came straight out of Jojo or something.
Last one I played was on GBA though, so do the DS ones support Wifi?
Looks pretty awesome. I'm a little worried about CO Powers since (far as I can tell) they haven't shown up at all in the screens or videos yet, but otherwise the game looks great.
I played one of the ones on GBA, and it was pretty fun even though I suck at strategy games. Maybe I should check this one out. And while I'm at it, I might even look more into the new Fire Emblem.
Last one I played was on GBA though, so do the DS ones support Wifi?
The first one was out before they had DS's Wifi up. I'm assuming this one is going to have it, though.
i the orange haired girl from the orange star ranks still in the series?
i the orange haired girl from the orange star ranks still in the series?
Considering that they seemed to have killed everybody off, no.
I'm not very excited about brown/grey colour scheme but, while I liked the old cast, it's nice to see that they had balls to make a new fresh start.
If this game has online features beyond crap like "share your maps with your friends!" they better make the gameplay much more fluid and faster. The only time I have seriously played AW against a human opponent the match took nearly 2 hours (granted perhaps we were total n00bs). The word stagnant would had described it the best, so it wasn't much fun. And that would not make a good online experience.
I can't wait for this game. I love advance wars series. I suck at them, but love playing them nonetheless.
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin also takes the series back a step, gameplay-wise. The Dual Strike CO powers from the previous Nintendo DS Advance Wars are gone, and CO powers in general are said to have been toned down. The tides of war won't turn so easily this time.
This is exactly what I wanted. Throw in some Wi-Fi capabilities which do not suck for the reasons Yoska already mentioned and we have a winner.
Yeah, I have to agree that a tone-down on the CO powers will most likely be a very good thing.
I hated it when you'd be on a roll and then "DERP THEY GOT A FULL CO BAR SO NOW A DUAL CRUSH WILL RAPE ALL OF YOUR UNITS"
http://media.ds.ign.com/media/949/949669/vids_1.html
Wi-Fi Is in this game.
the Trailer is alright shows the menu a bit. and yea this game is way darker.
I have actually never played an Advance Wars game, are they similar to Fire Emblem at all? I've always been interested in getting the DS game, but never got around to doing so.
@Mr.:
I have actually never played an Advance Wars game, are they similar to Fire Emblem at all? I've always been interested in getting the DS game, but never got around to doing so.
I played AW before FE, but I thought that the two were both very similar. Except, you know, I could flood the map with tons of dispensable units in AW and in FE I was one of those annoying people who starts a level over and over again trying not to lose a unit.
I prefer Advance Wars despite its often horribly cheesy storylines, but they're both incredibly similar in terms of gameplay.
I'm not sure what I think of the new one so far. The art style of it is so different, and I haven't decided if I like it or not yet.
Needs more Colin already.
oh god no, does this mean Grits dead:cwy:
and the new style looks kinda meh, not that the old one was anything magical but it still had its charm this just looks weird, But eh i suppose as long as its as fun to play as the old ones we`ll be allright.
Death by asteroids? Seems like of Sturm's buddies might have finally shown up to Earth.
I can't wait to get this game, even though paper cut-out look kinda bothers me right now.
Heh, rocks fall…everyone dies.
I'm going to wait and see how this one develops, since changing everything to dark and gritty might not be good for me.
I just read Kotaku's impression and it looks like my prayers got answered:
"Actually playing Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is much speedier than its Nintendo DS predecessor. The team has refined the interface so issuing orders takes fewer steps, resulting in quicker battles." CO powers had to be tuned down. Those were too dominating gameplay element, often the game ended up being just about who gets to use the power first. So if they do this right… awesome!
I haven't seen anybody pointing out this yet, at least it wasn't mentioned in Kotaku's article, and it's been too long since I played any of the AW games so I don't remember if these were there before but what those yellow roman numbers stands for?
! My guess would be that the units gains now experience, that's pretty common feature in strategy games, but I could be totally wrong (and making myself look like a fool). But it's a feature I usually like as it makes you think twice before kamekazing an unit so I hope I'm right. That heavy tank there is killing me though. If they keep in all the old models too it means there will be five tiers of tanks. Five. Blah. Well at least the trailer had that corny heavy rock track.
Oh, Roz has become one of those. The green people. Congrats, girl!
Couldn't you turn the CO powers off in previous games, though?
Yah, but turning them off also made the game even more slower. Besides CO powers were fun to pull off. Fun but overpowered. From my understanding they aren't taking CO powers away, they are just making them much less game breaking. Which is a good direction: CO powers should stay, they add flavour and a hint of strategy but CO powers shouldn't be the main focus.
I wouldn't worry too much about the number of tanks. Looks to me like heavy tank is the new name for medium tanks (mechs seem to have gotten a rename too, "bazookas"), and I'll bet good money that they'll ditch neotanks due to their retarded looking nature.
yeah, neotanks and gigatanks can kiss my ass
And just about the rest of those shitty gimmick units. If Black Hole invented it, it probably blows
I can't wait to get this game, even though paper cut-out look kinda bothers me right now.
You don't like Hotel Dusk Wars!?
Carter, I could not agree with you more about the stupid friggin' Black Hole things. Everyone knows of my incredible disdain for and frustration with the mere existence of Oozium.
! IT IS SO DUMB WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THAT
I wish more series would kill off their old casts in meteor storms and start from scratch
It was even better when Bolt's super ultimate weapon was a giant fucking oozium
@Cap'n:
It was even better when Bolt's super ultimate weapon was a giant fucking oozium
You have no idea how much that pissed me off.
@the:
I wouldn't worry too much about the number of tanks. Looks to me like heavy tank is the new name for medium tanks
Ooh, let's hope you are right. There still seems to be a some sort of Megatank there and I'm totally okey with it, that tank actually made things just more interesting. So it appears there will be at least three tiers of tanks…
But the only unit I had a beef with was Neotank (I even liked Oozium!). Not because of the looks of it but because it's just a better version of Medium Tank in everyway. That's very definition of lame. If it had a clear drawback, let's say it didn't have the machine gun or it had problems on rough terrain (it was on wheels after all) and hence it would be more a specialized anti-tank unit, then it would had spiced up things nicely. But no~
For me the CO Powers ,Super Powers, & Dual Strikes weren't really that bad
but yea they could be a pain when they were getting used on you since they not only gave enemy COs annoying abilities (Kindle,Jugger,Von Bolt) but they allowed both you and your opponents to move twice in the same turn, three if somebody had Eagle on they're team.
When I heard about this game I was on the walls, but looking at the game for the first time I'm kind of :wassat: about it now. Hopefully Nintendo & Intelligent Systemswill announce Fire Emblem for DS as well.
Gamespot Hands-On Preview:

Definitely shaping to be a very solid and cool game.
They also have a bunch of character art up in their gallery. Some look generic, but others are looking awesome. My personal favorites are General Fatso, Pompadour, and the old man wearing a hat (the last of that batch, I think).
I like the Mechanic and "Brenner"… >_>
Those girls look so out of place.... :X
Ever since I saw this in Nintendo Power, I started getting urges to finally beat Advance Wars: Dual Strike.
That's been a common problem with me lately. I'll quite playing an RPG for the night, and then the next day I won't want to play it at all. This has happened with Poke'mon (Emerald and Diamond), Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Paper Mario and The Thousand-Year Door, and the list goes on.
But ANYWAYS! The series hasn't died down a bit in my opinion. The new color scheme makes the game have an actual war-like atmosphere. It always seemed awkward when I played the GBA game, since the characters were all cartoonish and almost cheery all the time in the middle of a war. It just seemed wrong. But hey who cares, just play the game, Mr. Zoro!
That's been a common problem with me lately. I'll quite playing an RPG for the night, and then the next day I won't want to play it at all.
Advance Wars is and has always been strategy based you're thinking of Fire Emblem
Ever since I saw this in Nintendo Power, I started getting urges to finally beat Advance Wars: Dual Strike.
What's stopping you now you get in there and you kick some ass.
Advance Wars is and has always been strategy based you're thinking of Fire Emblem
…when has Fire Emblem not been Strategy based?
What wasn't said by me earlier is that FE is a strategy game with RPG elements while Advance Wars isn't.
@Sandai:
Advance Wars is and has always been strategy based you're thinking of Fire Emblem.
Just a quick disclaimer, but I've played both Fire Emblem and Advance Wars (Haven't played AW2 or the Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn), but what I really meant was any strategy and/or RPG game. It's a bad side effect, but now I actually have time for them ^_^
Still haven't beaten Dual Strike. Dang Ooziums.
What level are you stuck on and the difficulty?
Can't remember difficulty, but it's a two-front battle, and there are two armies in the bottom front and they're divided by a small strip of mountains.
Ah screw it I can beat this. It's the dang fog that gets me every time. Slow and easy…
I think I know the battle you're talking about, Mission 19 "Into the Woods"
Best I can do is this
@BSulpher:
Mission Name: Into The Woods
Suggested CO: Max & Grimm (OS) / Jess & Javier (BM)
Enemy CO : Kindle & Lash
Difficulty : 5/10Day One to Day Four for Orange Star will have an objective of moving right at
the forest ahead, having the APC drop an Infantry right into the trees, which
will spot the charging Oozium 238, allowing the Megatank/Neotanks/Md Tanks to team up and wham the Oozium 238 in one round (it must be defeated in one round or it will eat a valuable unit on the next turn).Blue moon will make use of their indirects to pound on the initial enemy troops, using the Tanks and APCs as protective barriers to keep the hard hitters healthy. The second wave of attack will come in the form of B-Copters, so ready the Anti-Airs and Missile units to bring them down from the skies. The final piece of advice is to almost fill the enemy Power Meters, but end your turn before completely fill them up, as the enemy will just attack instead of using the powers, allowing for an extra turn of poundings on them, leaving them with too few units to mount an effective Tag Power offensive.
Day Five onwards will continue the push to the east, with both units taking
a Com Tower to improve their firepower. Another Oozium 238 lies in wait in
the forests near the main road and the mountains, so once it draws near whack it with the powerful tanks to get rid of the threat. The final surprise the enemy has in store are a pair of Neotanks hiding in the trees near their
Headquarters, so make use of the Missile Silos to bombard the area (even if you can not see the enemy in Fog of War, the Missiles will still do their damage), followed by rushing into mop up the weakened units. Keep plowing along, routing all the foes for the easy victory.
I'd give you my own walkthorugh except I don't remember all of my tactics for the level which are kind dangerous to use though I can still give useful tips.
Heh, actually, I beat it without knowing you made that last post. What's really eerie is that I sorta used the same strategy.
Since I played the mission a lot, I was basically aware of any surprises. My main focus was to get to the east side as soon as possible with Orange Star and capture the airport. Well, dick. They captured it, but on the next turn I took out the infantry with a tank and had the APC stand on the airport ( I can't help but grin a little when you place a unit on a factory/airport/harbor so they can't get out). Then I had the Blue Moon infantry get on the mountains to see ahead in the fog so I knew what was there or not.
Then the rest was in the bag.
-New info on Days in Ruin-
(This is from an issue of Nintendo Power I got a month ago)
-Bike Infantry unit; moves faster than other infantries, but doesn't have as much attack power.
-New air unit that can attack any land and air unit
-You will now have to choose a unit for your CO to ride in, and as long as the CO is in that unit it will have a little "zone" in which any unit(s) around it will get an additional boost from the CO's Power, just by being around the CO unit.
-When the unit with the CO is destroyed, the CO will just head back to base, where you can still use a CO Power.
-When a unit defeats an enemy unit, the unit goes up one rank. When a unit goes up a rank, it will be stronger. To represent the unit's rank, a Roman Numeral will appear (Which answers your question, Yoska). Each unit can only max out to a rank of 3.
Game comes out next week in the US
I'm probably going to get it as soon as I can. I've needed something for my DS for a while.
.. Next week? I've only been like half aware of this since it was announced only a month or two ago so I thought it was a long time off. Well, damn.

! All CO names:
! Will
Brenner
Lin
Isabella
Tasha
Gage
Forsythe
Waylon
Greyfield
Penny
Tabitha
Caulder
! I was really hoping Beast would be playable. :(
Least we finally got his art though.
Maybe THE BEAST will be unlockable?
Maybe.
I could see that working out if Caulder isn't the mad scientist. Otherwise it would seem kinda odd that they list (what seems to be) the main villain in the ToC but not early game barbarian grunt boss.
Definitely need to pick this up next week and dust off my DS.
I saw a commercial for the game last night, it was odd seeing a DS commercial for something that's not Pokemon or Phantom Hourglass.
