I always assumed the characters in OP went by the Japanese standard where surnames are used first and personal names second. Even though they always get left the way they're written in Japan, I always kinda assumed "Monkey" was Luffy's family name, while "Luffy" was his first name. The other day I realized something..Gold Roger. Because of where the D comes in, in this name there's no way the Gold part could be his surname. So is it safe to say Oda-sensei realizes the difference in order of western names and took this into account when he named the characters? Meaning their names are already written by western standards which is WHY official translations never reverse the order?

you guys are assuming that Oda-sensei in all his knowledge of foreign languages doesnt realize that western the surnames come last. And considering most of the OP characters have western names, I was wondering if anyone thought their names were meant to be written as they are and not reversed in the west. Obviously the translators all thought so. -
Um, what? I think Oda said in an SBS that the names are in the Japanese style, not western.
