i would consider this contest very successful, considering we had 19 entries (i originally projected 10), and we managed to get some people who have never shown their fanart before to come out of the closet and draw something.

THAT'S RIGHT. WE ARE HOLDING A ONE PIECE FANART CONTEST. for the first time ever (and probably last, depending on the turnout).

first of all, THE PRIZE:

ONE PIECE 2008 CALENDAR.

this calendar, which will be released at the end of october, has 6 colorspreads in 18x24 size (HUGE). each colorspread covers the span of 2 months. two of which have been released for promotion by the shueisha's website.

mouth-watering, isn't it? it's all yours, for free, if you win the contest. now for the rules.

SUBMISSION PERIOD

contest begins today: OCTOBER 1st.
contest ends on e1n's birthday: NOVEMBER 7th, 11.59PM PST.

THEME

NO HOLIDAY THEMES ARE ALLOWED. they're overdone, and boring. in other words, the following MUST not be incorporated into the submission:
1. halloween
2. christmas
3. winter
4. fall/autumn
5. new year celebration
etc, etc.

SO HERE'S HOW WE'RE GONNA DO IT. instead of deciding on ONE THEME and make you all draw with the same theme, we will give you freedom to choose between the following themes. PICK ONE OF THE FOLLOWING FOR YOUR SUBMISSION.
1. dancing (any kinds: hiphop, swing, disco, etc)
2. hunting season
3. fishing
4. making mochi
5. paper airplane
6. water polo
7. mountain climbing
8. construction site (a building)
9. coal mining
10. go-kart racing
11. in the library
12. making a movie
13. sightseeing in the city.
14. courtroom
15. selling/making pizza

why so random, you ask? you'll understand when you read the SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

0. **NO AMV OR FANFIC SUBMISSION
we'll think about that if we're having another contest, but not now.

1. participants can pick ANY ONE of the themes listed above.
ONLY ONE. no combining two themes, because fishing and coal mining will certainly not work well.

2. **participants may submit ONE AND ONLY ONE entry.
if you feel you have not done your best, DON'T submit it.

3. **your entry can be colored or black and white, may be digital or traditional

4. **pin-up entries will ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, UNEQUIVOCALLY NOT be accepted.
pin-ups are the kind of picture that just features one or more character(s) posing to look cool for the sake of looking cool. for a good example of this, take a look at any bleach colorspread.

5. **your entry must feature AT LEAST FOUR out of the 8 mugiwaras.
you can add in extra characters from, say, skypiea or arabasta or enies lobby, but it MUST have at least 4 mugiwaras. you get to pick who.

6. **the characters in your entry MUST have some sort of interaction (this is also a judging criteria).
if they are just standing or sitting there, then that is a pin-up, which is not acceptable (read #4)

7. **entry must be PG-13.
this means no explicit nudity, sexual/erotic scenes/implications, and no unnecessary gore. DEFINITELY NO HENTAI SUBMISSION (this one's a direct message to a certain egg)

HOW TO SUBMIT

1. submission must be sent via email to e57124575@gmail.com as an attachment. SUBJECT MUST FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:
"apforums OP fanart contest submission: [user] [theme picked]"
so if i were to pick coal mining as my theme, i'd write on the subject:
"apforums OP fanart contest submission: e1n coal mining"

2. submission must be either in JPG or PNG format. don't submit GIF or BMP. those things can be unnecessarily huge.

3. submission can have a horizontal or vertical layout, just make sure that the LONGER SIDE does not exceed 1500 pixels. yes, PIXELS. not POINTS.

JUDGING CRITERIA

each criterion gets awarded 1-10 points by EACH judge:

1. ANATOMY
we are not going to be very technical on this. having diproportionally skinny waist like oda's women does NOT constitute point deduction. we judge anatomy to make sure your characters don't look like the ones drawn by luffy. for help on anatomy, here's a free ebook for reference: http://e1n.kefi.org/MANGA/Anatomy.pdf

2. COMPOSITION
essentially, how you position and lay out your characters and make them work with the theme and the background. be as creative as possible.

3. INTERACTION
making the characters interact is NOT easy. but you have to try. interaction is the reason why oda's colorspreads are really fun to look at. one piece is all about the fun and not about the fights (in case you forgot already), so think fun and make your characters interact.

4. LEVEL OF DETAILS
since both colored and b/w entries will be accepted, they will be judged based on the level of details. a simple colored drawing will get less points than a highly detailed b/w entry on this criterion.

5. EFFORT
the old saying goes "you get E for effort." not anymore. we are also giving points based on how much effort we think you spend on the picture.

it doesn't matter. you can draw the setting on a winter island, for all i care, as long as it incorporates one of the following into the drawing:

so for example, gokart racing (#10) in a winter island with christmas trees and pumpkins is perfectly fine, but the main point is the GOKART RACING.

@ participating members: i understand that these restrictions make a rather difficult prompt for the contest, but please think of it as a challenge to REALLY use your creativity in producing something that will blow everyone's mind. otherwise, people are just gonna draw the one thing they've been drawing over and over and over, and that usually means either waist or bust shots (or even mugshots). this IS the creativity forum, where you show off how creative you can be, and drawing something you've been drawing / practicing for a long time can hardly constitute "being creative."

my suggestion: play with angles. practice that perspective. try using a 2pt perspective, or even a 3pt. try colors you've never used before. play with the lighting, create effects you've never tried before. try a new medium. really learn your anatomy.
