      Hello…

I don't post often, but I've been One Piece-less for far too long, so here I go.

I just moved in to college a few weeks ago. I go to a big university that has some strict policies about downloading files over the internet. Apparently, if you use any sharing software (i.e. BitTorrent) they can track your IP address and sue you.

I found this hard to believe, when one of the girls in my dorm told me that she used LimeWire to download a song, only to have one of the guys in IT come up to her later that night and say "you downloaded one song with LimeWire today, didn't you?"

      FREAKY.

So I was wondering...is MIRC safe in that aspect? Can I use MIRC here without getting my broke-as-it-is-ass sued off the face of the planet?

There was already a thread on this kind of thing: http://apforums.net/showthread.php?t=14101&highlight=downloading+college

If it were me, I would go with the External HD thing.; and keep it hidden.

uhm… would that work? i thought universities often had their own servers and could track any data...

if the university dont like peer to peer programs i would avoid them completly.

Have you considered using something(like a proxy) to hide the IP? Then they couldn't track it, assuming it goes by IP only.

If the school has realized this possibility, which they probably have, you have few options. As for IRC, it's technically a chat program, and I doubt they can track it the way they can track P2P networking.
