the only music i think is better in the dub is that music when Goku went SSJ3 that was hard
Dragonball: Evolution (Live-Action Movie)
-
-
That shit sucked ass Funi fucked up the majority of the music having to do with Transformations with their Techno/Rock (whatever) bullshit.
-
True but it sounds extreamly dated for obvious reasons (the show is pretty old). If it was same tune, modern technology it would be better to me
Who cares if it's 'dated'. It's still awesome.
Anywho, i can understand not liking certain aspects, for example, I don't like how many of the adult male characters (Goku & sons) have small/feminin voices for the japanese version.
-
me cares. Dont like the VAs either, thats why i like the uncut dub better. The diffrence in watching them is me enjoying vs me with earplugs and subs
-
Yeah, DB is twenty plus years old, it uses old music, listen to it and you'll get use to it.
-
I don't have any problem with the music

Epic, best music ever.

head cha la, I hate that song, and it makes no sense. >_>
Hey, don't you go dissin' good old Head Cha-La with me around! :P
The song's supposed to convey this really free, airheaded, adventurous feeling. Pretty much Goku's theme song.
but their voices are so high pitched it's grating. None of the men sound like men (well, the ones I care about), and that bothers me…. a lot.

The point of the voices being like that is that they kept the same voice actress doing Goku's voice all the way back since DragonBall when he was little. They kept the voice to convey how Goku never really grew up, and still retained that same childlike, carefree innocence. They did it for Gohan and Goten for pretty much the same reason. Then the voice was used for Bardock and Tullece (though with a more serious, badass tone to it) mostly just because the former was Goku's dad and the latter was pretty much Goku's "evil twin."
And it's still leagues better than Freeza being voiced by an old woman.
EDIT:
Just to clarify, I like a lot of the voices in both versions. I really prefer Babidi's English voice, for example (Japanese one just grates on my ears… ugh), while I think Linda Young's chain-smoking, sex-offender old-woman Freeza voice brought shame upon the character when compared to the calculating, sadistic, chilling, and masculine voice by Ryusei Nakao. Same with the music. As much as I know how amazingly superior Shunsuke Kikuchi's orchestrated score and the various amazing theme and insert songs by Kageyama Hironobu are compared to anything synthesized up and chucked into the dub, I still like "Rock the Dragon" and Faulconer's aforementioned "SSj3 Powerup Theme."
The only real problem I've really developed with the dub isn't so much the voices themselves, but the crappy script. Aside from a few exceptions, FUNi has reworked most of the dialogue to turn it into a more typical Saturday-morning kids' action cartoon, and as a result, a lot of the more intricate little details that added extra layers to the story and atmosphere have been completely lost.
One big example would be the terms they use for ki. In the dub, everyone just calls it "energy" or "power level" or whatever. But in the original, the only people who called it that were Freeza and his troops. This really helped make a contrast between those brainless, brawny space thugs who only knew how to charge and blow stuff up with their "energy," and Earth's more skilled martial artists who actually had a more concrete and mastered understanding of their "ki" and how to use it effectively even against opponents who had more going for them in terms of raw strength. This, and a host of other equally subtle but cool and contributing factors, were mostly completely ignored or botched in the dub. Not to mention all the times where inspiring or important dialogue was changed to something completely different and/or stupid. Take this (paraphrased) example from the Cell saga:
Japanese
Kuririn: "Hey Goku, we're facing someone even stronger than Freeza now. Does that make you scared, or excited?"
Son Goku: "…Both."Dub
Krillin: "Hey Goku, I have faith in you! You can beat him, dude!"
Goku: "You bet, Krillin!"See what I mean?
So the big problem with the dub isn't AS much the voices or music, but with how the story has been mangled. It's like a whole different show in a lot of cases. A vastly inferior one, at that. I honestly have to say that if anyone decides not to watch the original Japanese, simply because of a silly little reason like not liking a voice or two… then you're truly missing out on a LOT of good stuff.

@Sandai:
Fixed
Eh, I've never been one to worry much over silly things like "canon." Detracts a lot of enjoyment from the show when you're worried about whether something "fits" or not.
Besides, Toriyama designed a lot of the movie characters himself, anyway. XD
-
hey heres the Goku going ssj3 in 9 languages its starts at about 40 secs. Spain lmfao, Poland wtf? i like americas the best cause of the music, but germanys sounded iite too. Portugals was awkward, Brazil idk why its just funny to me. Id put Japans 3rd, behind germany but thats just me
TuB6k3DYHOs

He also had virtually no involvement with the story…....

With all dude respect, sir, I too dislike the JP dub and prefer the English one (preferably newer one) a lot more.
I mean come on, Goku's in his early/mid 20s and his JP voice still sounds like he hasn't gotten past 3rd grade…and all that yelling from his JP voice gives me a headache.
BTW is Bardock voiced by the same seiyuu? It seems that way from the new DBZ fighter. -
Hey we all disagree sometimes besides I can't say anything bad about the english dub that wasn't already said in the subbed versus dubbed thread.
-
Sean Schemmel as Goku IS one of my favorite English DBZ voice actors. He's gotten a lot better since the awkward Freeza-era parts of the story when he first took over doing the voice. In contrast to that jambled mess, check out
THAT is what the man is truly capable of as Son Goku (he even actually uses the family name "Son" in that video; first time that's ever done in anything English DBZ, I believe), and all it took was an accurate script and some good voice direction (both thanks to Mr. Chris Sabat, I believe. Most of the stuff he directs the dub for is pretty well-done). Plus, the guy can freakin' scream. His SSj3 powerup sequence in
is amazing. -
Yeah i own movie 12 that movie is good
Is Burst Limit worth getting? I heard it was short, it looked good tho in that clip
edit: i always wanted to know if the music in movie 12 in that scene was the real audio. because its badass

Did you have to Burst Limit as an example I just could not listen to the horrible VA in that game despite all the time I put up with that in the anime dub and the original version of Budokai 3.

@Ty- I'ma let this vid decide it for you-

used that song in an amv about a month ago, one of the few songs i have know idea wat there saying and its still hard. The game looks good but idk if its worth the 60 bucks i need to drop on COD4 and Saints Row 2

Why not just hold off on Saints Row 2?
-
Heh, funny how every version uses the awesome original music, except the american one with some pathetic, generic techno crap..the brazillian dub was pretty bad except for a few voices (Vegeta, Kaioh), but at least the bgms were there.
No offense, but judging by some videos i watched, i really, REALLY can't see how someone could stand the english version for 400+ episodes and still like it, it seems just unbearable. Well, to each one his own.

probably could since my bday is in 3 weeks just get it preordered (hopefully) my rents hate games

Really, I am. It's awesome. -

Well, Gohan's voice was always sorry, as were the minor characters. But Goku's was decent in it's own way, as well as chibi trunk's.
I dunno, despite the lame lines that don't match up with the original, the dub just beats the japanese version because I don't have 16 little kids screaming in my ear. (a huge exaggeration, but you get the point.)
:/
And Ty, you should get COD 4, it's rather beastly.
-
I find it funny thinking about it now how everyone takes potshots a the J-dub
because certain character(s) don't sound manly enough which is strange if you were to take Stephanie Nadolny's Gohan or Linda Young's Frieza in the Funi dub into account. -
Manly has nothing to do with it. Just grown men usually don't talk through a screeching cat in their throat.
Also, could someone please get a mod in here? I think it's bout time we changed the topic title.
-

Same can be said about an alien not sounding like an Old woman but I'm not tossing and turning in my sleep over it.
-
And you think I am? I don't care, but I would not choose the Japanese version over the English any day of the week. I found the FUNi dub better than the Japanese even in edited form.
-
And you think I am? .
I meant people who always the feel need to always criticize the original dub over that one issue not you particular.
-
Then at least turn the subtitles for the Japanese version on while you're watching, so you can know what they're supposed to be saying.
-
in the uncut dub wouldnt they be saying the exact same thing as in the original?
-
in the uncut dub wouldnt they be saying the exact same thing as in the original?
Far from it. I own the first season and they take a lot of liberties with it.
-

We're just talking about the show because there's no more movie news…. or at least, that's what I'M doing. :O
-

that sucks…Ah well (watches anyway)
-
The liberties they take aren't enough to keep me from watching the dub. Just wish they'd keep some of Goku's quotes like Movie 13's "If I don't do it, who will?!!" or something close to that.
-
You can mostly blame Eric Vale (Future and teen/Adult Trunks) for the movie two and three scripts. Using the wrong Kaiô-Ken attacks and what have you.
-
There have been times where they've altered events in the series with the "uncut" dub, like radditz telling Goku and Piccolo about Vegeta much earlier on in the original, but the dialogue was replaced with "you don't stand a chance against me."…..
the funniest thing is, Funi's fully aware of what they're doing, since it's in their own fricken' subs.
-
in the uncut dub wouldnt they be saying the exact same thing as in the original?
No. Not… at all, really. In my long post a page or two back, I mentioned how there's so many script changes in the dub, it might as well be a different show.
Like I suggested, next time you're watching it, watch the dub, but have the Japanese version's subtitles on so you can compare the dialogue. They're a LOT different most of the time.
-
Yeah, Gen Fukunaga formed FUNimation when he got his uncle to get him the rights to DB and Z but also wanted TOEI to give them translated scripts but the scripts they got were so poorly translated (Engrish) and also with their Americanization that after nigh fourteen years it'd cost too much to start all over again with a faithful dub.
-
@Yuugi's:
it'd cost too much to start all over again with a faithful dub.
It'll happen someday, I think. Maybe it'll take decades, and it probably won't be by FUNimation, but… It will.
-
So when we're too ******* old to leave our house and buy a dvd? >_>
At least this movie is gonna be a great adaptation, otherwise I'd me mad as hell.
Oh, and I totally called Shuu being Mai's dog, watch and freakin' see.
And how does she end up serving piccolo, is she gonna be in some freak cult that resurrects him and he's gonna kill everyone but her. How does that work? He hates people. O_o
-
So when we're too ******* old to leave our house and buy a dvd? >_>
More like so old we won't want to do anything BUT order DVDs (or BluRays or Holograms or whatever's the standard by then) and watch them.
Oh, and I totally called Shuu being Mai's dog, watch and freakin' see.
That would be awesome. I'll make a prediction that Goku's riding a Nimbus-brand bicycle.
And how does she end up serving piccolo, is she gonna be in some freak cult that resurrects him and he's gonna kill everyone but her. How does that work? He hates people. O_o
Presumably someone IS trying to resurrect/release Piccolo, but we don't know the details. Just about EVERYTHING having to do with Piccolo is being kept vague.
-
We're just talking about the show because there's no more movie news…. or at least, that's what I'M doing. :O
facepalm No, not what I was referring to. This movie isn't "being film(ed) in Canada".
-
New interview with Chatwin, in which it seems he's really studied up and gotten into his character (read through the entire manga for it… that's no small feat). Also talks about some of the fights, and the types of martial arts styles the characters use.
-
This post is deleted!
-
Aside from trying not to look at Chatwins mug, while picturing Goku. What he said sounded good…(trying not to blaze Chat until i actually see footage, but its hard to do...and ive done it a hell of a lot already)
Goku + Capoeira eh. Goku seems to use a little of that in the tenkaichi games. This can be good, but i hope its not to "Sanji" -ish and maybe more like this
0uTY1W9xGOk
I just PRAY that this movie aint PG…please PG13
-
We original heard PG-13… but last we heard it was PG. Which is really surprising if true...
-
PG movies can get away with a lot these days. And it seems like an appropriate rating for DragonBall. There's gonna be violence, but it's stylized martial-arts violence and some guns. It's not anything brutal or over-the-top gruesome.
The Incredibles had stuff like constant machine guns being fired, hand-to-hand superpowered fistfights, explosions, and a surprisingly high body count. But that barely still merited a PG rating.
-
Capoeira eh? I guess that's what goku should've had to make him more monkey-ish. But in most fights, he'd kind of mix a lot of style's to get the job done. Mybe we'll see rock paper scissors, that had to be my favorite attack in the entire series.
Honestly, who's bad ass enough to gamble his life with a game? Goku, that's who. Shame he stopped using it in Z, he'd probably beat the shit of Vegeta with it.
