First I should state that I utterly despise Dragon Ball and its other incarnations. So thus I kind of hated Toriyama. I also read Dr. Slump and Sandland and thought they were stupid. Then I picked up Kajika and I thought it was pretty decent. But then I saw the character designs for Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest VIII and I started to really like the way he draws. Finally, a few days ago, it was unvieled that he was doing the art for a new RPG called Blue Dragon which can be viewed Here Now I'm completely in love with his art style and I can't wait to play DQ8 and BD. Though, I still don't like how he draws feet, but anyway how come he's never tried drawing a cool mideavil type manga like DQ? I think it would be really cool. So does anybody else like his art?

I like Akira's art style, but what's wrong with the way he draws feet?
-
I love it, don't mind the pointy feet.
-
I like toriyama's art… Some parts aren't very good, the muscles aren't that great, the pointy chins and feet are kinda wierd but the only thing I hate about it is the way he draws eyes... But for some reason I've always though his art was good..
-
I love his goofy art.
-
He has great art.
And you don't need to "warn" us that you hate Dragonball. Its not taboo…..

I…..
-
like the style of Dr. Slump. Very cute and cartoony.
-
have mixed feelings about early DB. His style was the same, but he didn't do action scenes and details all that well.
-
thought later DB (Z) was pretty cool, but the huge foreheads really started getting annoying around then.
-
love the style of the one shots. And I'm really digging his current style. Dragon Quest VIII…...I haven't been this excited about an RPG since FFVII.

Toriyama's art style doesn't bother me that much, except when he draws really, REALLY bulky characters. Then again, the only real exposure to him I've had is DBZ, and looking at his video game character designs (I greatly prefer his video game characters; the artwork for Blue Dragon is what piqued my curiousity to the game, in fact.) I need to read the original Dragonball, sometime. I've heard it's MUCH Better than DBZ. In that it has a plot.

Is that why you hate how he draws feet? Cause they're pointy?…
-
Yeah. They look like daggers.
-
I love Toriyama's work for the most part.
There were a few things about his style that bothered me towards the end of Dragon Ball and the various other things he was working on at that time. His female characters usually just looked… off, I guess is how you'd put it. Bulma especially looked odd.
On the other hand, I agree with... I think it was Animerica, anyway, I agree with the statement that nobody draws children better than Toriyama. He captures childish innocence in a way that nobody else can.
-
This will get to the point that I haven't read much of DB, only the very few first tanks, or even Dr. Slump (I liked the latter more, art and story wise). It's okey, I can't say I love it but I don't hate it neither.
-
i like it but i'm bored of his style… the characters all end up looking the same. btw, DQ8 was boring. the first DQ i haven't been able to finish.

…....I officially give up on RPGs. :P
-
Oda's art in Wanted reminds me of early Toriyama style.
-
I love his art when it comes to box art of some video games (mostly rpg). It's really neat because he puts detail into it and his art is just unique compared to other anime/manga (besides one piece). I seem to like the stature of his characters and the eyes.
I think hes more into the rpg game art stuff.
-
I liked the art in Dragonball, but excluding the villain designs and Vegeta, I think they all looked their best 'round halfway through. From Namek and onwards, everyone became too…square, especially Piccolo, who was coolest in vol. 16. Also, I felt that his designs began to become standardized, where the faces of characters began to look alike.
I was also dissapointed to see all the animal-characters dissapear, but then again, nearly all of the DB world was normalized, so... -
I liked dbz art better than sandland muuuuuch cooler
-
'normalized' like the word :D I especially love the way Toriyama draws his creatures and monsters and for some reason it reminds me of Oda (since he enjoys putting animals into his color spreads). I also had a flip through my Manga Artist guide and saw some of Toriyama's drawings, I thought sand land's pages were terrific.
-
I think that in the end, Toriyamas art was more fitting for Sandland than Dragonball. And Sandlands style is actually kind of OP-ish, so maybe it's that…
Speaking of Sandland, isn't that Fat Franky-family meber with the bow tie and round body somewhat similar to the big fat guy of those Swimming bandits? -
I've never read sand land, all I know is that probably the main character is the one that has spikey hair, pink overall, and sort of chibi-ish.
-
That would be beelzebub, prince of demons. Yup, he's the main character, and he's kind of cool.
-
I liked Sandland, but at the end it became a little too DBZ-ish, but I guess it wasn't intentional. Still a cool comic, it's a shame that Toriyama really hated writing it.
-
It's… Meh. It can be cute, but I don't think it worked when what is known as DBZ came along. Too little detail, and the visual effects need work.
-
I got Dr. Slump yesterday, and I have to say that I feel his art worked much better there.
-
I have to agree.
-
I like his art style but I think it fits much better with his humor manga titles and not many action manga. Though he did do a great job on DB he still kinda made the villains look sort of cutesy in the early volumes (Piccolo Daimao, Tanburin, Synbaru, Red Ribbon Army) and then made them look more like the goodguys in later volumes (Freeza, Cel, Super Buu) He has gotten better though but I also think hes trying to break out of the manga buisness, he's doing les art oriented projects now like his children's book Tochhio the Angel and the only manga he's recently done are the few Neko Majin one shots we've seen in japan's monthly jump.
