couldn't get any advice on a base for the Inazuma wig so I just bought a white wig that looks like it'll work x__x; who knows. Never modified a wig in such a way so I assume I'll be using a LOT of glue and a LOT of styrofoam and a LOT of copic marker xD must message Binkx and ask how she made hers even though I KNOW I won't be capable of such amazing magic like her xD
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...

i don't care about the merch. i got anime north the weekend before. This will help stretch my food money for the whole week, and give me some money for other fun stuff. i'm around monday and tuesday after the con. you available for some fun?
oh yes, and if i have room in my luggage, i will bring some all dressed chips, and ketchup chips to try. lol i dun like the ketchup ones, but at least you can say you've tried them.
Oh, fun stuff non con related would be a good reason to save money! Don't worry too much about food, hopefully we can do fun stuff when we are not at the convention
-
i always worry about food, when I am at friends, cause I am Hungrygirl, and I don't wanna eat all your food. (maybe only if you were swimming in money) I'm like this at my friend's place here too. She's the one with the twit fiance that didn't have a job, and she was paying for a house, and car, and paying off student loans. (he has a job now) I always go to the grocery store and buy me some ramen, and snacks and stuff for myself, so I don't eat all their food.
Ya, it costs money to have a high metabolism.
and if you guys can't get away from work, I understand. just send me in the direction of the closest mall. :3
-
got more done today though if you were to just look at it… wouldn't seem like much but if you sew 12 straight lines of bias tape on to the back of a suit top back, which means I sewed down EACH side, so that was running it through my machine 24 times... it takes FOREVER and my wrist is kinda hating me. I still have two sleeves, both front pieces, the inner lapel and the top collar to put stripes on and that's just ONE SUIT. Then... there's Kizaru.... faints good thing I'm starting more than a month before the con xD and I'm off Monday xDD;;
thankfully Akainu will be simple... all the same color x__x; NO STRIPES.
Anyone else having luck with their cosplays that's actually cosplaying? I know nobody that's going to A-Kon is really cosplaying but I know that there's Fanime before A-kon? maybe you guys working hard can inspire us to work hard xD
-
The only newish cosplay I'm bring to A-Kon is my secret cosplay I want to have done for Acen, which I think if I will actually get unlazy and start sewing the coat together… right now >_> it will get done, but I am not that optimistic about Croc at this point TT____TT
-
I still need to finish Kizaru, Akainu, and all 3 admirals pauldrons and buttons. Iceburg, Paulie, Inazuma, Ivankov, probably Mr. 2, and Crocodile. Not even remotely started buying shit for the hook… wish at this point I could spend money to commission it because of time but I can't... must make it n YOSH
erm and also a secret cosplay that wasn't original the secret cosplay xD I think that's all unless I forgot someone x__x; OH and making a Man chest for Kidd for my sis so we can go to a photoshoot in May xD;
-

Actually cosplaying? Not sure I got that, I'll be Shank, a possible Croc… I plan to be in character as best as I can be, no skit or anything lined up...
Though trying to piece together a PG enough verison of the 80's Pirate Movie, "I am the pirate king." (I know it's from the Pirates of Penz just a bit more...Franky like, pervert? A bit not to bad it was the 80's) And get the AM's Gol D Roger and Luffy in on it. You seem to have a full plate, just hope to see all your work before you change into the next costume.
Pondering getting my buddy from Rocky Horror picture show to do Ivan, and splice a odd One piece Sweet transvestite song...but probley wouldn't fly
-
Working on Fanime cosplay starting next week. So, progress won't be mentioned til about 2 weeks. 1 is especially easy since it's going to be closet/plainsclothes cosplay, which I like doing on the last day of a convention. Something comfy that you can have fun in.
Oh, but I did buy a Ben Beckman wig, finally. Should've done it for last year rather than using my real hair. Live an learn.
-
Real hair never works for me, ever, even if the character does have similar hair/style to my own =___=
-
I used my real hair for Yasopp.. when it was shoulder length. At the convention I wore the costume Sunday, after I'd had my hair in a wig cap for Kumadori and Buggy all weekend… my hair looked HORRID. I didn't even comb it at all on Sunday... and it looked so nasty it was perfect... xD not that I was a perfect younger Yasopp .. the hair was just nasty enough xDD that is the only one it really worked for... xDDD
I would LOVE to see another Iva or Roger even u EEEEEEEEEEEEEE
-
I am going to use my real hair for Akainu, I mean, what's left of it by the time Akon rolls around xD My hair grows soo soo fast I'm gonna have to have it shaved like.. Wednesday so it has NO CHANCE TO GROW before that coming Saturday =_=; I mean, it can try, but it won't have much of a chance >:) WAHAHAHHAHAHAHH
Right now I've had my hair cut for less than a month, and it looks NORMAL again, and in another month, it'll be unruly. I can see it now.
-
i usually use my own hair for cosplay. doin it for my maggey cosplay
-
I think I used my own hair once, but I actually like wearing wigs, especially if it means I don't have to dye my hair and destroy it everytime I dress up like a character with orange or green hair lol
-
Using real hair is definitely better than using a wig…if you naturally have that character's hair have light hair that takes spray dye easily.
I have short, black, straight, hair. So while I can cosplay Luffy kind of easily, anyone else that isn't wearing a hat is tough. Thank god Akainu wears a hat. Makes my life easier for Anime Expo. Gonna wear wigs the rest of the convention.
I think I can call myself a master of disguise, because no one really recognizes it's me when I cosplay right away. Even hanshi didn't recognize me as Amazon Lily Luffy when I wore it at ALA. AND SHE'S IN MY COSPLAY GROUP! XD
-
Some people started forgetting what I looked like IRL because they've seen me in America too much, saying I don't look right without the wig and glasses on ^^;;;; (and blonde hair) XDDD Some people don't beleive my hair really isn't blonde XD
My hair is just hard to style, it screws up in the humidity, and it just won't stay, it's too thin/fine XP Hard to get volume in it either, so even Ema Skye, who has really simple hair, took forever for me to fix and having to stop SO MANY TIMES during the convention to keep my hair in place, and there is nothing out of the ordinary about her hair style, but my hair simply refuses to do what I want it to do =____=
-
So if you're lazy and have a lot of money, you can buy Luffy Cosplay:
!
I don't know what the materials are made out of, but at least it looks correct. 3-buttons, check. White shorts trim, check. Strawhat, check…maybe? Don't know if they'll throw that in, and also, just because you can wear Medium in clothes doesn't mean that your head fits a Medium as well. And this is most likely in Japanese sizes, so it runs smaller.
Of course, you can make a Luffy cosplay for way less than $100 if you know where to look.
-
fail that not a straw hat
-
wow… I probably made my Luffy cosplay for like $30 ......
it's the accessories that make it expensive... like the shoes xD I ordered comfy japanese like shoes off ebay cause sandals SUCK Dx my feet HATE THEM
wow... I just... WHO would pay for that???????
-
See first sentence. "If you're lazy and have a lot of money…"
Still, it looks better than some Luffy cosplay I've seen.
-
yeah it looks better than a lot I've seen
though some of us are kinda of… anal about cosplay I've still never spent $100 on my Luffy cosplay... even my SW Luffy which looks NOTHING like that Luffy, wasn't that much xDD I think almost anyone can make a closet Luffy cosplay but some of us will still make it more complicated than it is probably xDDD
still
that's so MUCH!
-
I use wigs all I can Dx I'm still not happy with my sisters Iceburg wig stares at it wasn't ever cut very good =_= and it needs the curl… NMAAA Dx must fix it somehow...
-
Send me a picture and when we talk about Inazuma maybe I can help you with some Iceburg stuff too.
-
u tonight.. is a good night! SURE! I gotta get my lazy ass to bed before I don't get up in time to work out with my sis in the morning
I hope though I got a good enough wig for Inazuma xD heh damn it. hunted forever to get something without a skin top that wasn't a pos Dx come wig… COME TO ME!! Hurry up you ebay bastards...
-
Dude, my Inazuma wig is a total POS. It was the crappiest Geisha wig ever and I just TLC-ed it and then imbued it with Iva hormones until it became awesome. It was a mighty struggle of wills.
-
mines going to be a straight wig I have to somehow wrap around styrofoam I haven't … bought.. or shaped yet... xD; I'm afraid I will fail this mission... damn me and wanting to do creamsicycle Inazuma xD
btw... I still think your Inazuma wig is my favorite... it just has that perfect shape u ... I forsee mine wont...xD
-
Chimin' in here to say that 90% of cosplays are going to be better with a wig. But if the character's hair is really really REALLY short, you're better off manning up and cutting your hair.
-
Agree that short hair is best with real hair. I hope that no one is misunderstanding me about my stance on wigs. I like them, and they're pretty much de facto if you want to get into cosplaying. I do like using my natural hair a lot more though, which is why I'd like to cosplay people with short, black hair (aka Luffy). Still, majority of the time in cosplay, it's leagues easier to just find a right wig to use.
Now, if only I could find wigs I need much easier. Still looking for a Niizuma Eiji wig for Bakuman cosplay.
-

Totally agree. Also, dying/cutting hair to try matching it up to "anime hair" could get expensive (and could prevent you from getting a job XD)
But yeah, with short hair, its not so bad. Otherwise, trying to cosplay characters that have massive hair, its impossible to match that in real life most of the time, so wigs are good.
Speaking of wigs, this is something I may wear to this A-kon, just for the hell of it. A wig that I styled myself =3
! Did a photoshoot with my lovely awesome boyfriend who happened to love this wig on me. It was fitting, for a punk rock album cover (school project lol) I can't wait till he uploads the actual photos =3
! -
I'm hopefully gonna get some hands on experience to see if I can block out giant hairy eyebrows this weekend and see if I can put makeup over the glue. Got my fingers crossed xD
Also..yes to the short hair statement. I think it would almost be VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE to do Akainu without already having short hair. Getting a wig for hair that short..would look just..awful… xD
-
I really am tempted to shave my head for Shiryuu, I dunno why, but it's probably better to have the least amount of hair as possible on my melon head XD
Also I'm HOPING it shall be soon (though it's been that for a week now) that the awesome pictures of my Ponyo cosplay I had taken in November will be up soon >< I saw him FINALLY getting to our cosplay group-shoot event… and just posts one photo from that... then never posted anymore >< So I'm hoping they'll be up within the next... month .___.
As much as I like the guy, the near 6 month wait is really not cool =/
-
Wait, you did a Ponyo cosplay? Aw, those pics better hurry up lol.

Those are the only real decent pictures I have it, the ones from the photoshoot I think will be SUPER ADORABLE <333
-
Worst case scenerio time >_>
Since I really couldn't be assured Croc's coat would be done in time for ACen…. guuuuulp
So... Here I go to kill myself getting 2 cosplays done in 2 1/2 weeks.... Shiiiiiiiiiiiit
Hopefully, I will be fortunate enough to get Croc's coat done next weekend, and get most of the secret's coat done next week as well. I HAVE to get them done next week, to give me a week to do Croc's hook done, then spend the rest of the time with accessories.
Fuck my life DX
-
Like I said on AIM, if nothing else bring what you don't finish of croc and will finish it late thursday night.
-
All-night sew-a-thon? Ew. I hope it doesn't come to that. So many things can go wrong when you're trying to do something while exhausted mentally and physically.
-

I know this well, I swore to not do this again.
It really won't be a, finish this the day before the con thing, but I will probably stay at my friend's house until we get this done (but we have the freedom to allot ourselves decent rest time XD), because she lives pretty far I only have the chance to come to her house that weekend and use her non-shitty sewing machine.
-
I'm assuming Charli is the one helping with the Croc coat? It would only take me a day to get that done… honestly if I didn't procrastinate... probably just a few hours ... xD but that's just me and I have a simple pattern that has no sleeve seams. I can't imagine you guys can't get it done
but the other coat, I know nothing about so I don't know if it's going to be hand sewed, or if you can do it on a machine? If it's a machine, I see no problem at all. If it's handsewing... then FUCK.
I can't even tell you how many nights I spent hand sewing Kidd's fur coat, which is the only coat I've had to hand sew. That, and Doc Q but Doc's coat isn't complicated...
I wish you luck!
somehow I THRIVE on all nighters n YESSSSS dunno why but somehow I get so much done when I have to.. xD
-
Charli was going to make it for me, but she's not really sure she'll have it done for Acen, so I've decided to pull someone else to help me get it done. She's going to come over and try to help me knock it out. I've never sewn a coat before. But I'm more worried about the collar, and modding the pattern so there isn't a normal collar, but no collar.
-
And adding lining. Feeling fur on your arms (regardless of longsleeves) can't be comfortable.
-
i've come to realize that charli helps a lot of people with costumes around here. how much notice do most people give her before cons, or is she just too nice to say no? she always seems swamped. and last year, i sure remember her last minute dash to the finish all night sewing.
that's what you get for being so darn talented charli.
i'm guilty of pestering her too.
-
I asked her back a couple of months ago to help me with this, but then she said she couldn't do it til April, and then she's like I'm not sure now @_@
And adding lining. Feeling fur on your arms (regardless of longsleeves) can't be comfortable.
Croc's Impel Down coat isn't fur except for the collar XDDD
-
Croc's Impel Down coat isn't fur except for the collar XDDD
Ooooooooo… Well, if it isn't lined still to save time, hopefully it won't irritate still. Uncomfy cosplay isn't fun the whole day.
-
T____T buu you know some of us other people can sew too…
When I make the Croc coat for my friend it's going to have fur for the collar, but it won't be lined or made of fur, the actual coat. It doesn't look like it's made of fur at all like his other coat. I know Kaizoku-Syns was, and it was SLICK AS ALL HELL UNF but if I did make this out of all fur, it would cost a fortune and it would take FAR LONGER but I know I can probably get a regular coat done in a day if I don't get side tracked.
Also, by regular I mean a coat with lining, some form of collar, and cuffs. If it has 20 buttons, or 10 buttons and 10 button holes, designs on the collar, gold trim, pauldrons, that NO I couldn't do all in a day x__x; but Crocs coat looks simple and SLICK so I think I could get it done quick. That was my plan anyways T_T until the fur peeps said they wouldn't get the grey in for 3 weeks CRIES but I went with a differnet color that will hopefully look nice too crosses fingers
-

Croc's Impel Down coat isn't fur except for the collar XDDD
i have a feeling she's just too darn nice for her own good.
-
I'm not lining the coat, but the cotton sateen is soft, so it's not an issue (besides, Croc doesn't put his arms in the sleeves anyway, so it really won't be up against my bare skin).
I'm not lining the coat for my secret either… which is probably a bad idea, but the backside of the fur is amazingly smooth and soft, so I don't think it will bother me XD
I should learn to line shit, it probably wouldn't hurt to do that for Shiryuu and Coby... I must take a few proper sewing classes this summer >_>
-
T____T buu you know some of us other people can sew too…
^^ I thought about asking you, but you sound like you have plenty to do with Admirals and other cosplays XDDD
It's good that I do this myself though, learning experiences are always a good thing.
-
lining is AMAZING I don't think I ever want to make something without lining it EVER AGAIN if I can help it. Atleast coat wise. My sisters Bellamy coat I made would look SO MUCH NICER lined T___T it's probably not a problem for anyone else but when I sew a hem, it would look AWFUL. Not now though xD but back then it was horrid u__u and if I'd had lining, it would've been covered up.
however, something with lining always has twice the material xD so for me it's 3 yards for the base, 3 yards for the lining… I know 6 yards of any fabric can add up fast x.x;
@arei it's ok! It's better than it's someone in person to help you! I wouldn't know what would be fair to charge people anyways x.x heh so best not to worry about it xDD I just hope they can help you
-
As long as you weren't charging anywhere near $300, it would be reasonable XDDDDDDDDDDD
Yeah i couldn't afford anymore material then absolutely necessary, but i will go all out for Shiryuu… cuz it will be shit if I don't XD
