So does anyone know why Chopper couldn't smell that Sogeking and Usopp were the same. His nose is supposed to be mad sensitive, he was able to tell when Walpo was climbing up the mountain and the perfume Nami had in Alabasta was hurting him and he could still follow scents after it so why couldn't he smell that Sogeking was Usopp?
Chopper's Nose

Shall I do the facepalm pictures or should someone else?
-
oh come on…its a legitimate question, so dont feel like you gotta be a jerk to everyone buu...
-
Interesting question, but I don't see why this needs a seperate thread?
-
This should go under therios that dont deserve there own treads. But I think Chopper is just Niave and just does int try to sniff him out.
-
I bet it's because Sogeking claimed that Usopp and he are good friends. So even though their scents are the same, he may think that it's because of their close contact. Also, he may not know what a hero is supposed to smell like .
-
Or Chopper was caught up in the moment and Did not think of Smelling him.
-
Chopper has never really show the ability to distinguish people based on smell alone. That's why. It'd be different if he was like..smelling Luffy's hat and tracking him down in a crowd based on the scent, but that's not how it works. His nose is sensitive, that doesn't make it a homing tool. Besides, all the strawhats probably smell similar since they live together.
-
its been asked before and the best (imo) answer we could come up with is that chopper cant smell usopps smell even reguarlyy because he handles so many chemicals when fidgeting with his ammunition and inventions.
so chopper is smelling the gunpowder on both of them but doesnt make any connection because he would smell gunpowder on any rifel/gunman. -
Yeah outlawz is hear looking at Gorloms sig.
Gorlom your Idea sounds good I should have used that one.
-
Didn't Sogeking say he rescued Usopp and that he was Usopp's friend? Even if they smell alike, Chopper'd probably just assume it was because they rubbed against each other at some point or whatever.
-
would that be enough to completly cover a persons original smell? just haveing someone else rubb against you? heheh =P
-
All this talk of Ussop and Sogeking rubbing against each other….there's probably a fanfic like that ><
On a more on topic note, I wonder if Oda will ever let chopper know about Sogeking's identity.
I'm certain Luffy already knows but pretended not to to give Ussop some confidence and peace of mind, but Chopper is genuinely out of the loop. -
well yeah Oda said what each straw hat smelled like and said Usopp smells like gun powder so pretty much all the snipers in the series would prolly have the same smell but Chopper was able to distinguish what Walpo smelled like so he could tell the Dr. Kureha of his return, guess it's something not to over analyze just something that bugged me
-
It was the perfume…. and groin fluids that rubbed off on him from the square heads when he had sex with them in between scenes. Chopper could sense this wasn't Usopp because Usopp never gets any, but the enigmatic stranger obviously did.
That sort of stuff wigs out the senses of deer anyway. You ever put that special girlie deer urine scent on you when hunting stag?? Come on. It's mother nature's way of covering up Oda's mistakes.

Are you? (0_0) Maybe I missed something. I always had the feeling that if someone is completely out of the loop about it, it's Luffy. I don't think he will ever realize it, either. That aside, in a recent chapter (#465, I think?) Chopper was shocked to see that Usopp had Sogeking's weapon, wasn't he? I still don't think he realized, it though. Just too naive, I guess.

I mantain firm in my belief thatLuffy is in fact several times smarted than evryone thinks he is.
I'm fairly certain I remember a manga quote of someone saying that Luffy enjoys, "Acting dumb"
He has shown odd levels of intleligence at times (Gears 2 and 3?) and i'm certain that he is relaxed and idiotic because it helps lighten the spirits of his nakama, and that is his greatest treasure. -
Well I thought Sanji explained to Luffy that Usopp was Sogeking cuz he said he heard everything and that Usopp not showing up was his answer Also Usopp admits to being Sogeking when he tries to rejoin I thought they all pretty much heard that even though they pretended not to

I don't quite remember all of that.
Especially him explaining it in his appology, that didn't happen b/c Chopper was confused when he saw Kabuto. -

I absolutely agree. I think this has been proven several times already. Or perhaps he really just has this really strong instinct for things, when they really matter. That hasn't much to do with intelligence, though. It's something that's on a different, higher level, I think.
However–I still think that he hasn't realized Sogeking and Usopp are the same person.

No, there are other times where he has shown genuine intelegence, I think he knows b/c Luffy seems to be 100% in tune with all of his Nakama.

Okay, okay. (^-^) Please give me an example, then. Because of all the times I can think of, I would call that "instinct." But then again I read like 25 volumes in the space of four days so it isn't unlikely that I missed something.
Still, when I think of the moment when Luffy couldn't get up and Usopp appeared–I remember reading that scene over and over, trying to make up my mind if Luffy had realized it or not, and it seemed to me like he hadn't.
-
Well here he admits but they coulda been busy fighting to hear the admission but it's all ambiguous
Also this one sorta shows the power of Chopper's nose
-
I just realized that's the picture where Usopp loses his sashimono.
-
noses dont work on superheroes

There's quite a few times. The most noteworthy is the time when Luffy explained point-by-point to Bleuno how Soru works. Another was when Luffy used ricochet to hit Enel, knowing that his mantra couldn't predict random moves. Another was using the Law of Inertia to stop the ship from hitting Laboon. Although the whole concept of shooting Laboon itself was stupid, the knowledge of the cannon's recoil stopping the ship was not.
There's also other instances where's been practical, such as when he flat-out told Sanji it was retarded to be fighting for a ship if it could cost him his life.
-

Wtf are you talking about?
As for on topic….
It's a joke, you don't need to look that much into it. -

Even so, I still think that if only for comedic purposes Luffy won't realize this for a while. You can't deny that he is very simple-minded most of the time, this has been stated by Oda himself. (Oda once said on the SBS that Luffy was always so calm because he's so stupid.) So there you go…
By the way, I was re-reading some of those chapters and before giving in and apologizing, Usopp yells that he was Sogeking all along. I don't know if Luffy heard him. I think he should have, but who knows...

I don't think Luffy plays dumb, I think Luffy knows fighting. He's a fighting genius, and just not so smart at everything else.
-

I think Luffy's simplecity is what makes him smarter than, let's say, a truly smart person. Here's a dumb example: Luffy just destroyed in mere minutes what Kuro, the second smartest person of East Blue, had planned for years. And yeah, he even solved a problem that Nami, third smartest, couldn't during most part of her life. But yeah, if Luffy was not strong, then he would have died a long time ago.
Anyways, who knows, maybe Luffy's intelligence was opressed since the days that Garp began to train him, so it may be probable that due to traumas, Luffy's mind finds "better" to be a carefree person.

Yeah, that's it; my point exactly! Couldn't have said it better myself.

beeing offtopic?
discussing Luffys brain when the topic clearly is about choppers nose.

Well, at the least the baby was cute. Choper's cute too, maybe that's the connection.

=PI was under the impression that the topic wasn't solely about Chopper's nose (even if that was the thread's title) but that it was also about the whole Usopp-Sogeking thing. We were talking about whether Chopper and Luffy have/will ever realize that he is the same person. At least that was my point when talking about "Luffy's brain."
I don't usually post in forums so perhaps I don't know how to discuss properly? I'm sorry. I guess next time I'll open a new thread. Although I already said everything I had to say on the subject… (-.-;)/
-
i got no problem with where the discussion is headed… i was just speculateing on the "baby facepalm". i dont even know if im right.
-
WARNING!! This is a very silly post.
Chopper's nose is blue. Blue is the color associated with truth and integrity, meaning that Chopper's nose will always sniff out the truth!
Chopper's nose would shout out "Sogeking is Usopp!" from the mountaintops, if only Chopper's Heart would let it. Chopper could not accept that Usopp had returned incognito, because that is not something Brave Captain Usopp would do. Brave Captain Usopp would have charged right in, yelling "I'm here to help save Robin! You got a problem with that?!" and commenting on how brave he is.
Chopper's nose tells him the truth, but for his heart's sake, Chopper doesn't listen.
END OF SILLY POST!!

oh, sorry, it was mainly meant for the overall topic of the forum. but i did happen to think that the luffy not being smart makes him smart comment was ridicules too. (the meaning itself, not the off topicness) maybe i just dont understand.
and i was thinking baby and chopper both = cute.
btw, marina, that yotsuba is sooo cute! i didnt know they were making a doll! im so excited now.

I too thought it was a silly topic, though it got more interesting than I expected. And about that, I guess it could be rephrased as how Luffy, being simple-minded, has an advantage over more intelligent, calculating people (who may think their actions over more before doing them.) And that, IMHO, can be called instinct, as I was trying to say earlier.
That was a cute baby, I just didn't know why it was there! (^ ^;)
(I think Yotsuba is adorable too, I'm definitely pre-ordering her. I just wish she was bigger! And you, you visited my blog!! Thank youuu~! (^o^) Sometimes I fear nobody ever does…)
