Guys, I stopped reading One Piece like 4 years ago. D: But, I'm finally crawling back into the fandom, and I'm wondering, does anyone know where to find the raw manga, starting from chapter 1? I've started taking Japanese since I stopped reading it, and I'd like to both get back into reading it while trying to further my language skills at the same time.
Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread

His punches should be a lot stronger if he didn't stretch because stretching actually reduces the power. Then again, it's a world where flintlocks take little time to reload, there are guys made of fire, ice, light, sand and lava and there's this guy that went to the moon on an ark with wood propellers.
You've got to think of it like this, when you stretch a rubber band and let it go, that snap is powerful. More powerful than any other way you could attack with the rubber band. That is how Luffy uses many of his attacks. And that is just the physics of snapping rubber, If somewhat stretched like luffy in real life, it is going to be powerful hit regardless of users natural strength.
Then there are the attacks that have no wind up and he just launches them out from a stationary position. I could see how those should be weaker, but he is so strong and his limbs obviously pick speed over those long distances, so they would still be stronger than if he didn't stretch.
-
Yep, I agree Romance. The momentum gained from stretching and snapping back adds a lot of power to Luffy's punches.

I remember months ago in that first colourspread post timeskip, Zoro's scar was on the wrong eye, but has (seemingly) been corrected at some point. Was this ever explained somehow, or did Oda ever address it? I only just remembered a while ago. It's really out of character for Oda to mess that up, and the colourspread definitely wasn't scanned backwards as I recall.
-
I'm pretty sure he addressed it in his little "comment column" (or whatever the thing is called where he can throw in a small comment in connection with the chapter in Shonen Jump) in chapter 599 where Zoro makes his first post-timeskip appearance. But how he did manage to make such a mistake, is a bit strange. And I wonder why he didn't just choose to stand by his mistake and make Zoro's right eye the blind one instead - unless it will later have some importance to the plot that it is the left and not the right eye he lost.
-
Well I'm sure he had already mentally committed to drawing the Straw Hats a certain way at that point. But yeah, it's probably the only time I can name that such a mistake was made. I actually remember being a little prejudiced towards their new designs for awhile after I got that impression that Oda himself wasn't 100% sure of it. Of course I love them now though, but yeah, it was weird.

Guess I should've been clearer. It's already been explained but I was talking about how he stretches it then snaps it back (Gomu Gomu no Bazooka, Bullet).

Yeah it was a huge mistake but not the only one… Don't forget for example Jozu's arm regrowing which was corrected as well later on.
Same for the post TS berries where he made a mistake with Zoro's as well...

There are a lot of comparisons to luffy and Roger and how they are more or less the same but if this is the case alot of the people luffy has fought would either be dead or there crew would(Roger apparently killing Squard's crew and even the old dude who trained luffy as a kid) so do you guys want Luffy at some point to more or less act as Roger?
-
I don't think he's as much like Roger as we may think. He shares some characteristics but so does Ace, who's quite different from Luffy.

The way Ganfal, Crocus, and Kokoro compared Roger to Luffy I'd say they are much more alike then you think. Even the trait that Ace and Roger shared about never running from an opponent or else their loved ones would be harmed, Luffy demonstrated that very attitude with Lucci. Ace and Roger are very different but judging by Garp's description, Luffy and Roger share the same personalities.
@ Kevo, if you mean that old man from the anime, he doesn't exist here.

Quick one: I believe there are some members here who edit the OP wiki. In case others need something changed on the site, could someone mention who they are?

Luffy knows when to run away and when not to fight, and can do so. And Luffy seems to make more friends than Roger, although this might just be a distorted view of Roger because we don't know much about him.
They both share characteristics that are attributed to all Will of D characters, and they share the same vitality and free spirit, but it would be boring if Luffy just became Roger. As far as I'm concerned, he's better than Roger.
-
As has been mentioned on this site several times, Luffy needs to surpass Roger. The old Pirate King wasn't able to change the ruling structure of the world before he died; all he could do was set in motion the era that would hopefully achieve his goal in the long run.
-
Luffy is more like Shanks, and I think Garp said that Ace is more like Roger than Luffy, although I might have just read that on the wiki, not sure.
^And the way to surpass Roger is to make friends (or have a good reputation with a lot of people, I think that's what this FI arc is all about really), be able to concede and to use all the resources you have. Something Roger never could.
-

Well if it's boring to you just accept it, because anytime someone described Roger it was basically describing Luffy at the same time.
I know Luffy can run when he needs to, but according to all the hints, Luffy is much more like Roger than Ace ever was. Ace would not run from an enemy just like Roger, Luffy has demonstrated the same thing before but knows when he is completely out classed. It appears Luffy has made more friends because we know all that Luffy has gone through and how people in his immediate path view him. The people who talk bad about Roger are just the people who read the papers or were enemy pirates. Even his enemies who really knew him respected him and seemed to enjoy his company. The people who hear about Luffy only in the news fear him and in all likelihood outright hate him simply because he is a pirate as seen in Saboady. By the end of the series Luffy will have amassed probably half the world to battle the WG, the other half will be against him.
http://read.mangashare.com/One-Piece/chapter-588/page014.html
http://read.mangashare.com/One-Piece/chapter-552/page011.htmlGanfal described Roger and his crew as a "fun" group of people. Garp's description of Roger to Dandan was Luffy down to the tee. When reflecting on Luffy's actions, Kokoro regarded Luffy as an idiot just like Roger. White Beard acknowledged that Ace was nothing like Roger personality wise. Luffy saying the exact same things as Roger according to Shanks? Luffy has inherited all that was Roger. Only now Luffy will be able to go above and beyond what Roger was probably trying to accomplish.
-
They share characteristics, but that's not exclusive to Luffy. Yes, there is a key similarity between Luffy and Roger that they are both driven, reckless and bring people to him (yes, this slightly contradicts what I said before, but my point was that Luffy, by the end of the journey, will have to make his public image good in order to succeed. There's also Squardo, and the fact that Luffy saved a country while Roger ruined a country's military.)
But Ace also shares a unique characteristic (never running away) which was a fundamental part of his character. WB was trying to make Ace feel better. Plus Luffy, Ace, Roger, Saul etc all share the Will of D which seems to be part of their character. They are always at the center of world changing events, and they love to have fun. This isn't exclusive.
I still think you are overplaying the Roger-Luffy connection and underplaying the Roger-Ace connection. I believe both exist, but I believe they are closer to equal than you give Ace credit for.
-
The Roger Pirates were also attacking a rival pirate or civilian ship in Buggy's flashback. All the hearsay knowledge of Roger makes him sound like Luffy. Stories of his actual exploits make him sound like a bit of a dick…..like another particular D we know. Seems Roger was a lot less adventurer and more a traditional pirate than Luffy ever will be.

You make it sound like Luffy is going to have the entire world vs the government/marines at the end. It will probably be split closer down the middle. My point being that Luffy will have just as much enemies as he will have friends by the end of it. The enemies will be the countries Luffy will have never have visited and will only go by what they read in papers. You bring up Squardo as if Luffy and Co had not already destroyed their enemies with no grudges left. Those enemies may not be dead, but you think Krieg, Arlong and Eneru are going have a standing any different than that of Squardo's to Roger? It is clear to me that Roger befriended just as many people as Luffy once had. They are traveling the same route as Roger, meeting the same people Roger once met who had a good opinion of him.
It's no different than the legend of Zoro, the blood thirsty demon running around in east blue. They fear him as a monster, but after people like Kobe met him in person they understand he is not an evil monster. Roger's reputation was no doubt the same in parts of the world that had yet to experience him first hand. Just like people at Fishman Island thought and some probably still think Luffy took down Arlong simply because he was Fishman.
Then you bring up the fact that Luffy saved a country while Roger ruined a country's military. Did you even read what Garp said? Roger destroyed a country's military force because someone simply spoke ill of one of his crew mates. Why did Luffy completely destroy Arlong Park again? Oh yeah simply because Arlong made Nami cry. Luffy destroyed Enies Lobby, in the eyes of the good and righteous in the world how is that any different from what Roger did? Garp even explained it himself, Roger's actions were as straight forward as child, the similarity to Luffy is uncanny.
Get of the wiki, and go read the translations by Stephen or VIZ.
But Ace also shares a unique characteristic (never running away) which was a fundamental part of his character. WB was trying to make Ace feel better. White Beard out right said Ace's personality is unlike Roger's. Yes they share a few things as mentioned by Garp to Dandan. But it is painfully obvious that Luffy inherited so much more than just the will of D from Roger.
-
Whitebeard told Ace he is nothing like Roger when he knows he holds resentment towards Roger and fear that WB wouldn't accept him if he was like Roger.
First of all, that Ace is nothing like Roger is complete bs, and we know this. So either WB didn't know Ace well enough, or he was just trying to make Ace forget who his father was.
What were WB's last words?
"Even though the bloodline has been extinguished, their falme has yet to disappear… an now have also come to carry the will of the late Ace.. those who will carry the will of Roger..."
He clearly never saw a connection between the two.
What do we know about Roger?
He was reckless, he never ran from a fight and he would never let anyone hurt or insult someone he loved -> all characteristics Ace had.
Yes Luffy is like Roger. I've never denied that. Rayleigh sees the same spirit and recklessness and drive that Roger had in Luffy. A lot of that has to do with the Will of D., and I'm sure if Rayleigh met Ace he would see that he was Roger's son.
Also Garp, who probably knows Roger really well, said Ace is like Roger.
Roger had the respect from people he met and yes probably his 'evil' is overplayed by those who didn't know him well, but if Luffy is to change this world he has to do what Roger could not. To overthrow the World Government, as many see as the final goal of One Piece, Luffy will need support from just about everyone.
He has made enemies: no name pirates like Don Krieg and Kuro, but most of his important enemies have in some way helped him: Crocodile, Buggy, Smoker. The ones who don't are unlikely to ever return, and I can see an arc in the New World where Luffy helps out Moriah.
He has the support of many townsfolk, including Alabasta and Amazon Lily.
This arc is about being a hero, something Luffy cares very little about, but I feel will become a big part of the second half of the series. Luffy thinks Pirate King is the man with the most freedom, but he's probably wrong, it's the one with the most respect. And that respect is born from the responsibility that will eventually be entrusted to him (as a King). That's something he is going to have to overcome.
And I hope at the end of this arc that 1) he does save FI. 2) that he does become a hero [with a bronze statue to boot] 3) FI will be be 'under the protection' of the SH flag, which would be an interesting new development.
Whitebeard is the perfect example: the strongest pirate alive, but he had a responsibility to protect his territory. He had the freedom to roam pretty much as he pleased but he took care of people.
Roger couldn't do that but he did manage to inspire a generation that probably could. That's Luffy. He is like Roger, but really he has to be so much more and come to think of it probably more like WB.
This sort of went somewhere I didn't really anticipate, and I hope it's still coherent.

Where does Sanji get all the cigarettes from? Are they handmade?

He gets them from "The Smokers" from Waterworld.
Also News-coo is a secret dealer. -

Zoro appeared the very next week's issue of the manga so Oda likely already started the sketches when that color spead appeared, he made a comment the next week it was a mistake. But if he already started the next week, therefore couldn't change it.

The one thing about the OP Wiki is that anyone can make an edit …as long as the page in question not locked. It's rare for the admins to lock a page though. I can think of only a few times it's happened and the reason why is several people had an "edit war", one kept adding speculations that wer not yet shown and another kept deleting it. One case was just after timeskip. After the color spread came out, two people kept trying to edit Zoro's page saying he lost an arm, and an admin kept having to delete it. She even put up a notice saying it was speculation, not fact. This went on for 4 days with having to delete over 25 times, so they ended up locking that page until the next issue came out provign Zoro did not loose an arm.
I remember that, since I follow it and, yes,I've made some edits there. You can make some edits without signing up, up its easy to sign up.

Thanks. I didn't mean that I had something to edit at the time, only if there were certain members/admins who go there regularly. In any case, I figure I could sign up there and ask directly.

so if hody popped the bubble on Noah then VDD is immobilized because of the water ? but he can breathe just cant move or what?
-
@Mark:
so if hody popped the bubble on Noah then VDD is immobilized because of the water ? but he can breathe just cant move or what?
Well if he doesn't die from the stab wounds then that would make sense. He should be able to breath just not be able to move well.

What do you think, who this guy is…
http://s3.imgimg.de/uploads/guydab5f564png.png
Is he just a unimportant worker at the WG or is he higher than we think. A bit strange that Oda has hidden his face if he is unimportant… And in the anime, I know not canon, he seems more like a boss

He look's like a pimp. But in all seriousness I'm not sure. He seems like an unimportant character to me.
-
This post is deleted!
-
Iam sure we will see him again, but he isn
t a leader. He is an intermediary who works for the higher ups, like DoFla was calling them and by that at least so important that he has direct contact with them. I don
t have the feeling that he is a skilled fighter, but in frot of DoFla most strong people look a bit weaker. -
Oh come on, an unimportant worker?! Face hidden and talking with Doflamingo about orders to assassinate a another War Lord, plus it is implied he has knowledge of Devil Fruit powers? I can't believe what I read in these forums some times.
-
Well if he doesn't die from the stab wounds then that would make sense. He should be able to breath just not be able to move well.
Ah, but the question is would the sea drain him of the strength to breathe?
If no, he'll be able to breathe and possibly still die of his trident-wound.
If yes, well then we'd all just be F'ed. -
I hope he dies, it would be nice to see a villain die for once. In this manga we see way more nice people die than assholes.
-
Oda mentioned that villains won
t die, because Luffy shouldn
t be a murder and because being defeated means like the end of their dreams..something may worse than dying.
In VDD case(which isnt related to my previous sentence, though) it would be a kind of pointless death and that wouldn
t be rly OP like, where a death means something and adds a lot to the story.(at least those were it is obviously shown that the chara died)
VDD being right now dead or unconscious brings the same impact to the story and so isnt necessary/won
t be the case. -
Well in VDD's case Luffy wouldn't be a murderer, Hodi would, he's already been shown to be a cold blooded killer, but in any case VDD probably won't die - I just wish he would.
-
Luffy deson't have to kill him for him to die. He could have a heart attack from all the E.S.
-

This is probably the fate of octopus as well. You can't just mix booze and pills without any negative effects.

Do you guys think Akainu is able to create a blade made from his element like his fellow Admirals?
-
Do you guys think Akainu is able to create a blade made from his element like his fellow Admirals?
If crocodile can do it with sand I don't see how he couldn't do it with magma. I would think most any Logia could, since they create and control their substance.
-
Do you guys think Akainu is able to create a blade made from his element like his fellow Admirals?
Sure, it's solid enough. I also wonder if he can also create Obsidian glass, too. Can't see much of a use for it, though.
-
@S.C.:

exactly, why create a sword when you can just shove your fist through your opponents chest? With the other admirals it makes sense, especially for higher lvl opponents, but Akainu is even more deadly with his fists than with a sword.
-

VDD being right now dead or unconscious brings the same impact to the story and so isnt necessary/won

They were lucky enough to survive, and if they died because of the battle, Luffy wouldn't care. Just because Oda said that doesn't mean that Blackbeard or Akainu won't die after being defeated by Luffy, for example.
-
Well, i made the theory a few years ago, that with the NW the whole series will get more darker and serious.
Seeing the topics used right now(racism, slavery,Goa kingdom and their view on people) i would normally see it likely that we will also get more deaths in the NW.
But afterall a death has to mean something important for the story(like when Ace died) and iam convinced that Luffy(or any SH) will never kill someone during his adventures and also that deaths in general will be rly rarely used by Oda…
Even fighting such evil man like BB and Akainu i cant see our hero actually killing them or else he wouldn
t be better than them. -
Anyone think there is a chance Hody's crew will undergo a transformation like his? (they take just as many pills has him right?)
-
Anyone think there is a chance Hody's crew will undergo a transformation like his? (they take just as many pills has him right?)
Perhaps, but it takes a while to transform and rolling around on the ground in pain is part of it, and I doubt they'll not be attacked by a Straw Hat then.
-
Anyone think there is a chance Hody's crew will undergo a transformation like his? (they take just as many pills has him right?)
Hyouzou already underwent a transformation. If you look at his hair it's white now while it was black before.
-
I would think a transformation from all of them expectable, the opponents of the Monster Trio anticipatable before the match-ups were set, and the likelihood of any more kinda low.
-

Can't wait to see Smoker's Smoke Sword attack then.
-
Can't wait to see Smoker's Smoke Sword attack, then.
Him doing it would be the least likely, but I wouldn't write it off completely.
I figure if Ace can make a flame lance smoke or magma weapon shouldn't be far off.
