I have a question, I have been studying it for a few months now. I just memorized all katakana and hiragana. Ive been using index cards to do that. Now on to words. I just wanted to know how you do it. Give me some advice. Please.

P.S. No college students i don't want advice from people that have learned through teaching. Just people that have done it my way

      Thank You

by the way i meant United States not america

I have Japanese for Dummies. It helps if you want to sound like you're reading from a book. Besides studying in college, however, I really don't know what you can do except… make Japanese friends.

What? Failing is hard work, too.

          Sit down and write them.

I do about 30-50 new characters a day.

No matter where you go, there you are.

I guess I don't count because I'm taking college courses, but I'm curious, what do you mean by "how do you write words?"
I recommend going to the bookstore and picking up some books in the language reference sections.

It taught me about 90% of all the Japanese I know. It explains everything clearly too. They have sentence structure, counting, common words etc. everything you find in a book. Very few given sentences though like a dictionary would give.

You can learn to count from 1 to 9999 or 10,000 in about 5-15 minutes from there. Atleast, thats how long I took to learn counting.

Read OP in English over and over until you memorize more or less what they say in every bubble [not hard].
                          Start reading it in Japanese.

I learned English like that and I'm planning to do that with Japanese too. After a while you got the hang of vague sentences try your luck translating random stuff and checking their real translation.

I don't like this idea, for various reasons. Mainly the entire "no translation is perfect" thing. But wow, you learning English that way is outstanding. I had no idea English wasn't your first language.

But yeah, it might not fit that many people. I know I'm EXTREMELY bad with languages, so the only choice is trying to push that with force. But I guess if my only purpose is reading manga like Major that have no scanlations, it's fine isn't it?

                                What?

In some places if you say America, you can mean North America or South America, so he was just specifying the country he meant.

If all my talents and powers were taken away from me by some inscrutable Providence, and I had my choice of keeping but one, I would unhesitatingly ask to be allowed to keep the Power of Speaking, for through it, I would quickly recover all the rest.

When you first joined AP, your English was kind of rough. You'd use incorrect verb tense, etc. But in the year that you've been here (it's been that long? O_o), your English has improved A LOT! You write in better English than some people who live IN the US. Hell, there are some people on this forum who have worse grammar.

ON TOPIC: What's this nonsense about not knowing how to write Japanese words? If you've memorized kana & gana, you should have no problem, right? I mean, it's purely phonetic.

                                              @Greg:

I do about 30-50 new characters a day.

30-50 a day? Darn, you are a fast learner. Now I will drag my unamerican butt away from this thread.

Phonetics is the study of human speech, basically. That also includes sound and lip movements. Who needs a dictionary when you have me? Speaking of Websters, the one to which you are referring is Noah Webster, who was an American lexicographer (which is someone who writes and edits dictionaries).

I've also been thinking of learning Japanese. The methods that have been described in this thread seem pretty effective.

I recommend going to the bookstore and picking up some books in the language reference sections.

                                                      What?

Well all i wanted to know if you use index cards or learned them in your head.
I already know all the Katakana and Hiragana. I just wanted to know words (which im doing right now) I dont need to know kanji because, The manga that i read has Furigana.(One piece of course) I just wanted advice to see how you learned them. Besides im only 15 so I can't just go off to college

You can learn to count from 1 to 9999 or 10,000 in about 5-15 minutes from there. Atleast, thats how long I took to learn counting.

When you first joined AP, your English was kind of rough. You'd use incorrect verb tense, etc. But in the year that you've been here (it's been that long? O_o), your English has improved A LOT! You write in better English than some people who live IN the US. Hell, there are some people on this forum who have worse grammar.

Ah, I see I see. Without even knowing. I always thought I stayed in the same level.. I shall thank you people.

Are you sure? Learning words one by one?
I mean, sure, I couldn't answer a grammer question on ANY language I know for my life, but the long way could be much easier for lazy justice.
Over the 2-3 years I've been watching anime like a retard I learned to translate an OP ep roughly enough for a medium fansub group. It comes naturally as you get a sentence in both languages together.

But whatever anyone wants to say about how that is true. HOWEVER! It surely isn't the way to learn words one by one, right?

30-50 a day? Darn, you are a fast learner. I also did Hiragana in a day and Katakana in two so I just kinda hit it off from the start but it's something that DOES get easier once you learn more. After you learn a good 1/4 of the Jouyou Kanji (about 500) you'll have seen almost every kind of radical they can throw at you. After that it's just a matter of putting things in the right place. Starting REALLY IS the hardest part.

                                                                ! > Dear Buuhan,
You asked where babies came from, so here's your answer.

                                                                –-------------------------------------------------
The human process of procreation is truly magnificent; I shall now explain to you what happens during the entire period of pregnancy, from conception to birth. But first, a little supplemental information:

Once a month, a female is at her most fertile. So, basically, during that time period, she is more likely to get pregnant if she engages in sexual intercourse. This period of time is known as a woman's menstruation cycle, when the lining of the uterus is shed. Basically, a woman's period tells her that she's not pregnant. During this cycle, a woman bleeds out because of the uteran wall's absence (which is why women use things like tampons).

Now for the process. When a man and a woman have sexual intercourse (I'm sure you know how that works), their respective sperm and ovum cells may combine and form a zygote (in other words, fertilization occurs).

The zygote then undergoes a process called mitosis, in which its cells divide and form an embryo in a process known as embryogenesis. All of this happens in about the first two months of pregnancy.

After that, the embryo develops in the uterus, supplied with nutrients by the placenta. An embryo has forty-six chromosomes, twenty-three each from the father and mother. Chromosomes contain genes, things that determine a baby's physical characteristics (hair and eye color, for example).

At about the eight-month mark, the embryo becomes a fetus; during that time it is legally defined as a person and is capable of motion.

Then, comes the birth (you know, with the contractions, and the hospitals, doctors, epidurals, and all that fancy stuff). Basically, the baby travels through the birth canal and out of the vagina, the umbilical cord is cut, and you've got a brand-spanking new human life in your hands.
                                                                –-------------------------------------------------

                                                                Hope that's an adequate answer!

                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                  @Greg:

I remember the exact kanji I was studying when this concept of putting radicals together seriously hit me. 授.
Before it felt like I was just memorizing arbitrary shapes even though I KNEW they weren't arbitrary shapes. And then it just kind of hit me – like, "OMG this is 手+ノ+ツ+冖+ヌ OMG I GET IT" and yeah. I've learned about 200 kanji on my own this summer (compared to the 600 or so I knew already) and it's been much easier since, now that I remember them in terms of radicals.

                                                                  . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Credo quia absurdum non credere. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

                                                                    spiral

Yeah, Japanese people tend not to think about how the characters come together to make sense ie. origin. (At least not normal people, Japanese teachers etc. are a different issue)

But as far as putting them together and the basic ideas, there is a point where it just clicks in and becomes like clockwork. It no longer becomes an issue of writing them because you just can, it's just making sure everything is in the right order.

No matter where you go, there you are.
