@Thousand:
You know I'd be more sympathetic about Togashi's plight if he didn't bring it upon himself.
How do you know for sure the hiatuses are something he brings on himself? Don't say that he should hire assistants if he's that bad; I'll get to that in a moment, but how would he be bringing on, if the rumors are true, an illness that forces him into this schedule himself?
First off, drawing manga is hard. In my opinion, feeling sorry for him is just pointless because it's something that ALL the mangaka in Jump go through. He's done one-shots and worked on Yu Yu long enough to know that he can't expect a walk in the park. And I'm sorry but I think it's pretty immature of him to blame Jump's system.
What's he blaming the Jump system for w/ HxH? For all we know it's something outside his control that causes this schedule and if it's something that should have caused HxH to go to a monthly release, Jump would have done so. Clearly there's more going on if Jump themselves are allowing him to have an adjusted version of their schedule.
That's how it was before his time and that's how it will remain. He wants his life to be easy but that's unfair to all the other mangaka who work their asses off. Togashi is no one special. But of course I'm not expecting Oda level of dedication either. Not saying he could get his 6 hours a day but he could get a reasonable amount of work time per week. Enough for him to eat, sleep, spend time with his wife and be all around comfortable.
Again, how do you know it's a matter of him wanting things to be easy? If it was an illness, let's make an extreme comparison to the situation and say that you wouldn't complain about someone in a wheelchair not using the stairs like everyone else. Same idea, if it's not his fault, you can't blame him for the schedule.
He just needs to hire assistants! He needs to fuck his pride. Jump isn't so easy that he can have it both ways. It's either one or the other. Expecting just everything to work out for him without making any sacrifices is just, I'm sorry to say, selfish of him imo.
This is too stupid to seriously reply to, but fuck it, I'm going to anyway. Having assistants or not is imo a choice of the mangaka. He shouldn't have to do shit just to please impatient fans. Perhaps YOU should fuck your impatience and get a life that doesn't include bitching about hiatuses of a freaking MANGA. Just sayin.
But let's look at the present. Somehow Jump has compromised to give it to him both ways. Be the cause of the hiatuses be illness, familial problems or just plain over-working like Yu Yu, he's found a system that's managing to allow him to dish out a chapter a week with decent art. So it's all fine right? And those hiatuses aren't a big deal except for impatient fans who are whining fags so fuck them anyway, right?
Right. Glad you could admit it.
Well, it looks like its those whinging fags that matter. Unless it was a fluke last week or it needs time to get back into the top spots, the hiatuses HAVE hurt Hunter's ratings to bottom tier.
It could be a number of things and not just hiatuses. And do we happen to know about the chapters in this chunk aside from last week? If they're all low, then there's a chance it's the hiatus system, there's also a chance it's not. But if it's just last week there're any number of possibilities.
And in a way, it's inevitable. No matter how good your story, you can't expect that alone to float your boat.
Actually you can, unless you're story's only attracting impatient and whiny fans.
In the end, as cool as it sounds, Togashi placing his artistic values over his fans is selfish (as he stated himself) and its costing him big time.
I won't even explain why this is hypocritical since you probably wouldn't understand. I bolded a hint for you though.
Now if those hiatuses of his were because of familial stuff or other things outside his control, he should be fine but if it was due to over-working then it stands to reason that there's going to be another hiatus and the next one could be the death knell. If that is what will happen then, as much of a shame it is, Togashi was just in the wrong line of work.
There could be more hiatuses even if it's been something outside his control…
All that said, if Hunter x Hunter gets booted from Jump for whtever reason, I almost think Togashi could finish and publish the rest on his own money or at least whatever arc he's on... He has YYH and Hunter x Hunter's earnings amongst his other works. And they could do like Shaman King and have him finish it IF there's enough fan demand afterward (bad example since vol 32 isn't out to my knowledge, but they've made the offer before...). That said, I doubt Hunter x Hunter will get thrown out by Jump any time soon.
