I have some old games for MS DOS from 1990 I'd like to play, but they don't work under anything above Windows 98. Is there a way to get them to work, and when they work, not having them go lightning speed?
Emulators…for MS DOS?

Possibilities:
-DOSBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net)
-Virtual PC with DOS installed.
-Old PC from garage sale.
Emulation usually eats a lot of CPU horsepower; you may be able to adjust the emulation speed if it's still too fast.

I had to deal with this when trying to play my collection of Space Quest and other old Adventure games, so let's see how much I remember. There was a video somewhere that explained how to get Dos Box, an MS DOS emulator, and another program to work together to make playing old DOS games easier. Let me see if I can still find it.

isn't it possible to run a computer in DOS mode?
Or do they not do that anymore?
-
Not anymore. Windows kept trying to move away from DOS so the only thing like using DOS mode on XP and onwards is the Command Prompt thing.
-
Hmm. I grew up on Windows 95. Sucks that the only DOS left is the command prompt. Some of the most classic games are DOS based.
Well, my best suggestion is to buy a crapbox of a computer that can handle Win95 or Win98 and run them in DOS mode if necessary. You can probably get a cheap computer that can run Win95 for cheap, probably less than $100 and I wouldn't be surprised if the OS Win95 was Freeware by now. Even if it's not, there's bound to be a way to download it somewhere. It's over a decade obsolete, so there should be no problem installing a bootleg OS.
Emulators will eat CPU usage like mad. There are only a few emulators out there who can emulate the NES with precision in speed. Not sure how DOS would work, but it's still an emulator and games won't run quite the same. I recommend just buying a cheap rig and getting the OS free.

could you please tell us which games you wanty to play? dosbox is teh shit but it's annoying as hell to configure it the right way.
if what you want to play are lucas art games, there is another great software for them. but i don't remember the name ^^ so i'll search for it only if it's useful for you.

I think he's talking about SCUMMVM. http://www.scummvm.org/
It is very useful for old Lucasarts games. They have a lost of games it is compatible with somewhere on the site.

I could use some help in getting a dos game to work too. I've been trying to make Fatal Racing work on XP for ages( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_Racing ), I tried Dos Box(keys didn't work there), and a hell lot of other configuration but it just won't work…..

Ignoring the rest of this guy's blog, the post under "saturday" talks about him getting Fatal Racing to work. Never heard of the game before so I'm not sure if that method really works, though. Good luck with that.
