Well, the MPAA has just adjusted its rating system to give any movie with a character smoking an automatic minimum of an 'R' rating. Considering Disney films are primarily aimed at family audiences and children in general, it would seem to be in their best interest for them to institute this policy.
I'm just wondering when they're gonna make you have to be 21 in order to see a movie with alcohol consumption. Scary!!!

All I can find is that the MPAA announced that depiction of smoking would be a factor in a film's rating.
In fact, from this release statement:
“Some have called for a ‘mandatory R’ rating on all films that contain any smoking. We do not believe such a step would further the specific goal of providing information to parents on this issue…”
So yeah, they're not that nuts. Still, this is hilarious, considering how society has already antagonized smoking to the point of even banning public smoking in some cities. So it seems less necessary than ever.

I know smoking is bad but we have to live in the real world: there are people who do it, there are people who will do it, and I don't think kids are that influenced if someone on celluloid does it. They're more influenced to smoke if their friends or family does it than some cartoon character or a guy in a movie.
You'd think people would be more concerned with the depiction of marijuana in films and media.

By they you mean kids, right? Dunno. If you, for example, teach for a kid that smoking bad and then you would still smoke yourself it will give the kid a message which would be very very contradictive. And that's pretty much the worst thing you could do. It will make the kid confused. Kids need clear messages.
Especially as we are just apes - our primary learning method is to imitate others. We take others' thoughts and actions and we make them ours. That's how our head works. And so words aren't as powerful as examples. Doesn't really matter if "others" are fictional or not, by the way. Kids aren't that good at knowing a difference of those anyway.
I grew up with my dad as a smoker, and he always told me to never, ever smoke. I understood that he was doing it mainly out of addiction.

Disney has done this on a couple of their video releases, particularly airbrushing the cigarette out of Goofy's mouth in in the film Saludos Amigos. Though this is pretty much an exception.
I doubt removing large amount of scenes depicting this in films like Pinnochio, Dumbo, 101 Dalmations, and Oliver & Company would really go over that well with the general public and I'm sure Disney has a bit more common sense than that.
You know if they ban smoking in Disney films, that is a problem particularly with Alice and Wonderland, with that whole Caterpillar scene (But the whole movie is an acid trip anyway.) Plus Captain Hook and Cruella are to be edited.
I'm fairly sure that this has nothing to do with going in and editting the old films. I'm sure it just means for future releases.

The thing I hate about the anti-smoking movement is how much they seem to focus on the social ramifications of smoking (pretty much an altered form of peer pressure, another things PSAs tend to warn kids about), rather than the health risks.
