(10th Anniversary) One Piece Manga Reaches 140 Million Volumes Sold!

Little bit of news coming out of the 10th Anniversary event @ the USJ Kamakura. The One Piece manga has reached sales of 140 million copies sold spanning across 46 published volumes, and also boasts the fastest manga to reach 100 million volumes sold. Also, Volume 27 selling a record 2.63 million copies in its first printing.

A lot of the audience at the event are women & children. Oda comments, that he's noticed that a lot of women are reading Weekly Jump/One Piece and he is glad that he can cater to that broad audience. Also says that he's plans to draw his manga to the end and is currently right in the middle, but is commited to seeing it to the end. (<–- Take with a grain of salt, my translations/interpretation aren't exactly pin-point accurate)

Its weird: although everyone complains about it, the fastest selling manga in OP history is early in Skypiea! (Vol. 27 = the Satori fight to the beginning of the Survival Game) That's just strange. But hey, its great to see OP as one of the best selling Jump manga ever. (only other one I know of with that many is KochiKame..and that's more due to time. But my worry: Naruto is up to 70mil and I really don't want it to pass 100mil)

One poll I read from a couple years back has DB at 140-160 Million. It could have picked up a few million here or there since but OP may eventually surpass it if it keeps going the way it has. (KochiKame too…but that is the tortoise of Jump)

I should take this time to point out that Slam Dunk outsold Dragonball. The title of best selling book in Japan which OP gained with Volume 27 was previously held by a Slam Dunk graphic novel not a DB one.

If we're talking about internationally, I have no idea how well OP is doing outside of Japan and America. But its nowhere near how well known DB is/was in the U.S. If the charts are about Japan, than I'd say SD is the one to beat/match not DB.

I atleast one point out that there is this other shounen jump series around the same time db was still running that often matched or outsold it in Japan, and eventually in other countries called "Slam Dunk." but since americans usually haven't heard of it, they tend to think of Dragonball as the end all, beat all shounen series in terms of popularity.

Slam Dunk is actually pretty popular over here, and I think that it and Dragon Quest are the current "Big Hitters" of one of the most productive editorials of Mexico. Naruto, Bleach and Yu-Yu-Hakusho just began to be released a couple of months ago, and One Piece was completely forgotten after another editorial screwed up the license.

Dragon Ball was also a great hit for what I've seen in the site, but the sales were not that great due to the ubberly ridiculous popularity of the Anime, wich is still airing in most channels that have an "All-Around" programation. The only real match DB had was Sailor Moon, wich for some reason was as popular with both girls and boys.

I'm glad Dai No Daiboken is that popular, being such a great series, but there's a mistake, the Manga actually has 37 volumes…

A SD graphic novel was the best selling book in Japan during the DB run. It held the record, I saw pics of this big ceremony if I remember correctly. They actually ran out of every single new copy of the book everywhere. You couldn't find a new copy and the factory decided not to print any new ones. OP only recently matched it then beat it, partially because they printed more copies from what I was told. OP got topped after that by a Harry Potter book though.

In terms of international recogniction I have no idea if there is an overall winner, and if there is it'll probably be Db for all time. But SD did outsell DB if it had the record for best selling novel in Japan at one time. Dragonball as a WHOLE probably did alittle better. But I'd bet SD overall still has higher sells as a series than OP, and OP will have to match that before it begins to try and take away any thrones from DB. The two big series in SJ history are still DragonBall and SLam Dunk! One Piece is the distant third. Someone on this very forum, posted the overall sales chart of all the SJ series which proved exactly this point.

If they dump Inuyasha, then they should bring Kinnikuman, with the whole thing of Mexican Wrestlers being crazy like in Kinnikuman, then it would surely be the biggest hit since Dragon Ball. XD
