I'm starting this thread cause I don't remember a thread on this specific topic.

anyways, one of my roomates left her pc tower behind. I have been meaning to open it up and see if there are any goodies inside I can use for my computer. you know, an extra hard drive, or ram, etc.

Thing is, I don't know much about the insides of the computer.

First off, I figure I should know what kind/brand of parts I have in my pc. My list I had with my purchase is packed away right now. So, where do I go on my PC to see what kind of parts I have. (i mean without opening it up)

Then, How do I know if the other computer's parts are compadable? I have a digital camera, so I figure, once I open it up, I can always take pictures of the parts, if that will help in assisting me.

well, anyone wanna help me get started? Thanks in advance.

A good useful tool is CPU-Z.

That will tell you processor type and speed, and memory type, size, and speed.

Other stuff, like disc drives, you can often see identified as it boots.
