My father found a baby robin laying in the driveway yeserday morning, on his way to work. It fell out of the walnut tree in our back yard (right by our driveway).

So then, I began feeding it bugs in from our yard like crickets and small black flies. We let it stay overnight since a storm was heading our direction. We thought about putting it back in its nest, but the nest it fell out of is sagging and wet from the rain. Plus, the mother robin stopped calling for it. She was calling for it yesterday and now stopped.

The problem is that we had a drought and can't find very many earthworms in the ground. Pretty much pieces of balona have been the substitute for worms for the robin to eat. Any tips on what else to have it eat? Will night crawlers be safe for it?

Oh, I tought you wanted tips to draw a Baby version of Robin, but anyways..

Don't you happen to know if there's any shop selling live bait for fishing where you live? There must be plenty of worms there.

        OR:
American Robin diet generally consists of around 40 percent invertebrates, such as beetle grubs, caterpillars, and grasshoppers, and 60 percent fruits and berries.[2] It feeds on a mixture of both wild and cultivated fruits and berries. It forages primarily on the ground for soft-bodied invertebrates, and finds worms by sight, pouncing on them and then pulling them up.[3]

Just give it those things smashed, and that would do the trick, and I bet the same could work with Nightcrawlers….

taking dry puppy kibble and putting a bit of water on it helps as a substitute for regurgitated food. my friend has had this kind of encounter twice so i learned a bit about taking care of baby robins. IMPORTANT: do not give the bird water. I don't know why but it'll die if it is given water. moisture in the puppy food is fine.

BTW: don't try to put the baby bird back in it's nest. the mothers normally throw the babies out because they're runts and they won't want them back.

Why not just kill it? It'll save you the trouble.

Or tell her to Give it to a Cat and Let the circle of life to keep rolling.

…....No, seriously, why do you think that Baby ended where you found it? It may be cruel, but it's fate was pretty much to die.

It rained hard the night before we found it. So, the wind must have blown it out of its nest.

                            Okay, seriously.

The best thing to do is to just give it to your local humane society or someone experienced with such things. That's what I did when this situation befell me about two years ago.

And then some cat, snake or falcon will eat it later, but at least you know you did the right thing at helping some animals to get their food.

I am so not gonna jump on this bandwagon by saying "Drop it off a building, if it is strong enough to survive, it'll fly. If not, splat and you're done."

You likely need to kill it.

I saw a pigeon at UCD that was missing its wing and contemplated calling the humane society, but the operator said they deal with dogs and cats, not rodents or birds. Pretty hypocritical if one asks me.

If the mother robin stopped caring for the bird, and it fell out of the tree, it likely has some physical damage. It'll die anyway - my family cared for a fallen crow like that named Sunny when I was younger and it eventually died, with ants crawling in its eye sockets and everything. Whose idea was it to feed the bird a banana, I wonder…?_?

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I woke up to find it dead.

IMO, it was probably too young for someone to take a good look at it, anyways.

At least you were able to help it.

Several years ago, there was a baby robin stuck in a gap between the wiring of the family's fence. Eventually pushed it out [since the mother bird was trying her damndest to get the bird out], but good ol' mother bird took that as a sign of attack and starting acting like a little shit, dive-bombing and pecking. Had to knock the bitch out of the sky.

Sometimes, it's hard to help animals, since they don't understand what's goin' on.

Birds are too delicate, so if you find another like that, just leave it alone in your backyard with some food. That's what I do with injured birds or babies, and in some days they leave. Of course, it does depend in the kind of backyard you have, mine is like enterely closed, so no cat nor dog could get to them.

If they are too small, yeah, they die, but most of the time the ones that just began to fly can do it. In this case it was probably too small to even fly, so it was just unlucky that it happened to rain.
