I don't think it looks worse. Nice screens, that attack in the first one is quite creative.
I just gotta play more of the first, I got to Mid-Boss second fight and his level 18 ass owned me. This game requires so much fricken leveling…
It looks like graphics that they should have used for the PS2. But still its just preview pics so I'm assuming they'll look slightly better by the time it comes out.

OK, bumping because there's actually some good details on this game now. Like… a main character.
Mao: an Honor Student at a Private (and Wicked!) Netherworld School. He is the elite of the elite, he skips class, doesn't do homework, and is an overall bad boy. His design is reminiscent of "Mad Scientist". When he sees something that can be a potential experimental subject, his glasses fog up and he goes in to "Glasses Mode". He gets excited easily. His goal is to study Heroes so he can beat his father, an Overlord, and take his title. Don't assume he loves humans or heroes, though. It's quite the opposite, he only cares about learning to beat his old man.
He learned about Heroes beating Overlords from studying countless hours Video Games.
Mao has a red crescent moon scar on his forehead. For what reasons, we do not know. Also noting, his name is probably a play off 魔王 (maou) the Japanese word for Overlord.
I really like this design. It's an interesting approach, and looks much more interesting than Adelle's design from the last game (though personality-wise I kind of liked him). And there's the mad scientist angle that has never been used enough for protagonists.
Game's setting is the school.

Seems like young shounen + mad scientist + darker looks. Mao looks more original than any other protagonist I've seen in most games. Though I like Adell, Mao practically beats him in the originality category, both in character background and desgin.
Well, Disgaea 3 will definitely and probably be one of the games for the PS3 category in my most wanted "To buy."
Screenshots look pretty good as well, school is an interesting and "original" concept for a setting within the Disgaea series. Though one question however Carter~

I can assume the Jiiya you speak of is the old count, from looking at official art and screencaps in that page…as well as studying your taste for characters a little.

Almaz : "Self Proclaimed Hero" He goes to the Netherworld in order to beat up an Overlord because that's just what heroes do. He wants to be a hero in order to impress the human princess he has a crush on. Instead, he runs into Mao, Mao STEALS his Hero title and Almaz is forced to be his vassal. As his vassal, Almaz tutors Mao privately on how to be a proper and good hero. By becoming Mao's vassal, Mao saves him from turning into a demon, apparently. (Unclear on this matter.)
Almaz is teased and has pranks pulled on him by Mao a lot, probably because Mao doesn't particularly like humans or heroes. Almaz is also considered a "Hero Otaku" because he really, really loves heroes. Finally, "Almaz" means "Diamond" in Russian.

I read somewhere that they don't intend on ever making her 'the star'. However, whatever I read could be entirely false. ..I WISH she was a main character in a game..
There was an ad in this months Shonen Jump about another Disgaea game for the PSP. Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness. The ad had tons of screenshots from what looked like the first Disgaea with a street sign of Laharl from his pose on 
HoD cover silhouetted, mirroring eachother.
Afternoon of Darkness is just a port of the first one with some extra stuff peppered in.

Urg… I loved the first Disgaea game to death, but I couldn't get into the second one. Probably because I had just started my second semester of college when it came out and the workload became too much - those N1 games are enormous timesinks.
But yes, as soon as I get time on my hands, D2 and D3 will be on my short lists of things to play. That trailer looked very promising.
I agree about them being timesinks. I'm still basically at the beginning of the first game. Second time you fight Mid Boss (Lv. 18). This game really makes you level.
NIS always did have the coolest attack animations in gaming. 
I'm borrowing my friend's copy of Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness for the PSP and it's awesome. It makes me really want to go back to my old PS2 file and finally beat the last couple of extra battles.

Well, I have two pieces of news for Disgaea fans. First, the DS is getting its own port of D1. Second, the United States is getting D3 this August. And last, from the Heroticism blog mentioned earlier, here are some scans that show all the human classes in the game:

For the most part, the male and female versions of the same class have different passive abilities and identical stats, except that females tend to have higher RES and males tend to have higher SPD. Also, the Masked Hero isn't a very good combat class, but they're AMAZING for running through the Item World - they're strong in Fists, they have abilities that increase their movement by huge amounts, and they can fly over enemy units. Never go specialist-hunting without one.
I'm pretty stoked.

They're releasing downloadable content every month for the rest of 2008, now. A few weeks ago they released nine special characters (nine of the ten student council members of the Makai Academy called "The Ten Gentlemen) on PSN, which became unlocked once you unlocked one of the other hidden characters. Right now they're letting fans vote on the next release:

Those are eight minor characters from past NIS games (I only recognize three of them…). The top two vote-getters will be the next downloadables. Because those eight aren't major guys, I'm assuming that major characters that aren't already in Disgaea 3 will be part of future downloads. There's still hope for Adell and Rozalin!

OK, I was a little bit incorrect on the last post. The Ten Gentlemen thing is correct, but that fan-vote thing actually applies to the July release, not the next release. The next release is actually this: http://asia.playstation.com/eng_hk/index.php?q=node/1618 .
For 100 yen, you can make the characters of Adell and Rozalin join your party (they're teachers in the Makai Academy) as well as make the Nekomata (catgirl) class available. That vote I linked to earlier is actually ends July 11th, and the winning character will be available in the download pack near the end of July. Oops.
But yeah, if these aren't somehow available in the English version… then I will be seriously PO'd. SERIOUSLY.
