I have Windows XP on my laptop, but my Dad says we can't port it onto my desk top computer for some reason and have to buy another copy.
Excuse me? Why won't XP configure on multiple computers? Is there a way for me to get it to work on my desk-top?

Basically, it fails in 30 days if you don't let it dial home and say 'I'm licence number 1234567, running on "(summary of system)", does this sound right?' and get the correct answer back.

Windows XP is registered to a CD Key. There's a million hacks for this, but I'm not going to post them here. Basically, no CD Key will work twice.
There are corporate CD licenses, but they're expensive unfortunately. And if you attempt to clone the CD Key on multiple computers, they'll find out.
It's not really a big deal, though. You just can't get any XP updates and can't run IE 7. Also, you may get a stupid pop-up that asks you to get a valid copy of Windows XP if you download the Windows Genuine Validation Tool (Don't download this!).

When on my illegal XP [oops] I used 3-4 programs, deleted some DLL and everything became a real authentic copy. If I try I can probably find it again [anyone can really, a little eMule search] but on the board..
