The farther we get along into Water 7, the more I can see why Oda chose to do that particular arc when he did.
Going from Skypiea directly to Water 7 would have been very emotionally draining, though it's sad to see how close Luffy and Usopp were just a few chapters ago compared to how things are now.

The Groggy ring & the Captain fight were really great. It was a nice change of pace after Skypiea, a lot of humour, great characters & short.
Also… Aokiji's appearance at the end, was just Oda's way of keeping all of us on our toes. After some fairly laid-back events, setting the tone for Water 7.
-
At the time it was dumb, and pointless.
But as you guys said. It served a great purpose for Skypiea to Water7. And showing the crew being really tight knit….
-
Yeah, I remember a while back there was a thread about the Davy Back arc.
We should've seen this coming. From now on I will consider short fun arcs to be ominous. And thinking about the Davy Back arc makes me so sad! Luffy and Usopp…
-
sad, isn't it? they were once soooooooo close…
i also remember how people in other forum (not the old AP) were complaining about the davybackfight serving no purpose and entirely boring. the defense used to be that oda wants to have some fun after the intense skypiea, but apparently there is no such thing as having fun for oda... everything serves its purpose...
-
afro luffy served teh purpose of awesome
-
Davy Back Fight is my number 1 favorite arc!
All the Straw Hats getting to compete - and Afro Luffy - and PORSHE! (Ah, Porshe is so lovely! That's why I made her my avatar! Of course lately the Square Sisters have won my affection away from her a bit…) -
I think the real purpose of the fight was the aftermath, when they met aokiji.
But perhaps was also the fact that Luffy was saying that he will not allow his nakama to be snatched away. This might have some lasting effect on Robin.

I think the real purpose of the fight was the aftermath, when they met aokiji. It served as an excuse why Luffy couldn't do anything at all to Aokiji. He didn't have time to eat recover meat after and before the grand fights. No wonder Ao was disappointed, he should let the guy have a rest first.
-
I think the fight had several purposes:
- crew interaction and the need to fight together
- interest in a shipwright
- different position of the captain: Before that, it seemed to me that Luffy did not make many decisions for others and everybody (except Nami) generally agreed with his decisions. I think, in the Davy Back Fight Luffy had to decide as a Captain for the crew for the first time.
Also, before Zoro was only tough to himself and his opponents and did not seem to mind that Usopp and Chopper were not as tough as himself and they did not need to live up to Zoro's tougher attitude. Only in the Davy Back Fight and later he demanded that the others behaved "like a man".

Generally it's a good idea to actually type words when you post.

I wonder why people complained about the Davy Back Figth Arc for being boring. I see nothing boring about the arc. Because Usopp desgisted as the Soge-King, ever wonder he migth got the costume from the Foxy ship shop? Aokiji needed to be indroduced.
-
I loved the Davy Back Fight long before Water Seven started. But I always liked competitions in mangas (tournaments, games, trials…). I was a bit skeptic at first about seeing Sanji, Zoro and Chopper play football but the way Oda handled it was cool. And Afro Luffy was an instant classic.
This arc is the funniest of all OP arcs. And the anime did it justice (despite filler episodes). The Groggy Ring especially was a great animation moment.
Some might have hated this arc because it once again delayed the story. I don't understand why people want the story to come to an end so soon. It's not like it's going down like Naruto or HxH. As long as Oda delivers arcs as funny as the DBF arc or sad/dramatic as the W7 arc, he may go on for years IMO. I even wouldn't mind another short funny arc after W7 before they cross Red Line.
-
Ohphen, please do not bump the thread unless you actually have something to express. There're minimum 4 words rule per post in this forum. :D
… Davy Back Fight... I think I only read once, and never re-read the chapters. Probably I will, though, for this time round.
-
i dont what the hell is boring in this arc?what?
everything was great as always foxy and his crew, the dbf and for sure the great afro luffy! -
Its boring for those of us who prefer plot and character development.
Though now looking back it was a good choice to include.
-
Well it didn´t have any flashback that showed any character´s indepth but I wouldn´t say there was no character development.
When Chopper became on of Foxy´s crewmates he has gone through a little character development after Zoro´s speech.
And besides the fight between Foxy and Luffy brought in a completely new fighting motif for Luffy. We all know that Luffy is willing to die for his friends. He proved that so often already. But in all the other arc´s he was fighting to stop their suffering.
But this time nobody except him was suffering. He´s just fighting to keep his nakama. He would even die to not let anyone go. That´s a completely new twist of his of his character. And though some may argue that such a behaviour should be expected from a character like him, we didn´t see it in One Piece so far, so you can indeed say that it is new. So IMO you can´t say there was no character development. Now while I do not consider it as boring I´m sure many may think so because this time the Strawhats are not fighting an evil guy who´s trying to take over or to conquer a land but actually just an adversary who challenges Luffy in a sports event. And instead of appreciating welcome and creative changes they probably just wait for the next big guy to fight which in other manga (DBZ for instance) is repetative. Actually if something gets repetative then it´s boring but if you always bring in something new and creative then actually this shouldn´t be the case.
-
I didn't think DBF was boring at all. After Arabasta and Skypiea, and the soon to come Water 7, I think the story really needed just a fun little adventure.

there wasnt much less character development then in skypia!sanji and zoro learned to work together, chopper learned what it means to be a pirate and so on.if you really would cut out everything what hasnt to do with character development, op wouldnt be same anymore and many volumes shorter.is that what you want?
this time the Strawhats are not fighting an evil guy who´s trying to take over or to conquer a land but actually just an adversary who challenges Luffy in a sports event.
thats one of the reasons why its so great, it refreshed op again.

But now, Water7 is proving that we needed light-hearted synergy before dark-toned drama.
Exactly! Especially when you consider what happened on W7 between Luffy and Usopp you see how important the Davey Back Fight was actually in terms of showing how strong their bond really is. I read it as if Oda wanted to give us the ultimate positive side of a friendship first and then the ugly side that friendships can have. And at the end after going through both of them the bond is stronger then ever before. Just my opinion.

Ivotas you are right.
however for me the dbf was more than just a pre w7 arc.
afro luffy and what he said in his fight and the sanji and zoro vs the groogy monsters fight is classic.ps ivotas

afro luffy and what he said in his fight and the sanji and zoro vs the groogy monsters fight is classic.**Well saying that DBF was a pre W7 arc doesn´t mean that it´s inferior. No way! But it definitely is a preparation (and a "breath take") arc that comes between Water 7 and Skypiea. It´s the same as Jaya is the breath take arc between Alabasta and Skypiea. Having the Mega arcs without the preparation arc´s would be to rash IMO. And it completely wouldn´t be Oda´s style of storytelling since he likes to take his time and to do everything in a decent pace.

Really? Muwahahaha!!! Thanks for the info. Can´t wait to get my hands in it. :D
