*deep breath*TMOHS SEASON TWO HAS BEEN CONFIRMED
-
-
I thought this was old news….oh well, excited nonetheless.
-
I thought it was a typo of Thomas.
I never cared about this series, but it's good news for its 5358358029523472957934 fans on THE INTERNET.
-
Okay, just wtf was that 25 or so min video I just tried to watch? To think I watched 6 mins to that only to skip a head and it clearly being nothing.
I'm all for it, I was going to read the novels but I'm lazy, this may be another excuse.
And if it does follow the novels, then it wont be called "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya". But rather "The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya". And that as a title…I dunno.

Yeah, the scene from that wasn't from the Sigh. That scene was Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, you know when Kyon goes back in time during the Tanabata Festival, and he witnesses the events prior to 3 years of the series. This in a sick irony causes Haruhi to get these weird notions, and ironically causes her to go to North High School, which makes him the creator of the SOS-Dan. It'll prolly be called the Vanishment rather than the Sigh, considering that the Sigh was already covered (The Summer Festival). The Vanishment however has not been covered
The scene that was shown was when Kyon goes back and is coerced by Haruhi to draw symbols all over the school. If you watched the video, you would see young Haruhi ordering Kyon to draw all those weird symbols in hopes to contact aliens.

Wa wa wa wasuremono.
-
Acronyms in thread titles suck!
-
Can someone explain the appeal of this series?
Keep hearing people go nuts over it, but never bothered to find out what was so good about it. Looked kinda boring to me.

It's a mixture of all anime genres. There is usually some aspect of the anime that is likable. Boring? With the exception of episode 14 Someday in the Rain, which really was intended to be boring, this anime isn't boring
honestly does this look boring?
or this
Let me put it this way, if you like NGE you would definately like this anime. If you liked Fumoffu then you would like this anime. If you like to laugh you would like this anime. If you like mystery you would like this anime. If you like Shojo or Shonen or both then you would like this anime.
-

Now I'll be sure to never watch it, ever.
-
Well I did enjoy the first season and will probably look forward to the second one as well.
I just wish they would announce these 2nd season continuations (Haruhi, Higurashi, etc.) sooner so I wouldn't go off and read the light novels and manga, thus knowing what's going to happen. So used to anime series ending abruptly leaving things totally unresolved. shrug
Though it was pretty cool noticing all the little references they made to the novels themselves in the first season. But Haruhi IS much more of a bitch in the books, they toned her down in the anime.
-
@Cap'n:
Now I'll be sure to never watch it, ever.
Don't worry, he's wrong. I boycott NGE with every essence of me, yet I enjoyed this show. I don't see how it is anything like NGE…
-
Never watching it, ever.
-
Don't. It's one of the most overrated, unfunny things I've ever seen in my life. I watched it to review it for ANimeTV, and good lord, not since Evangelion and FLCL has my view that the anime fandom has shit for taste been so reaffirmed. I'd get into specifics, but that would make this post into a rant, so I'll just say "go find my review", and end it here.
-
Wait… you hated FLCL?
I'll take your word for it though since it coincided with what I already decided on.
-
FLCL remains to be the only time I actually got irrated to the point of anger during a television show. Comedy shows aren't supposed to do that, from what I understand.
-
NGE= **Neon Genesis Evangelion?
how is it alike?**

I love FLCL, but I can see how that's possible.
-
Screw the dissenters. This show is awesome. A main character like Kyon was a breath of fresh air from all the clichéd idiots and wusses.
If you like something new that doesn't take itself too seriously (yet has many godly moments) and is also beautifully animated, watch this.
-
clichéd idiots and wusses.
You mean like the "moe" girl?!
By the way, anyone else wanna do harm to people now over that damn (loan)word, now? "moe"? Not the lovable stooge, mind you, but "moh-ay". Also known as the "Spirit of Rapist" to the Native Americans…
-
Having sat through a few episodes of this, I can safely say that I have absolutely no idea why people are eating this show up. I see nothing groundbreaking, funny, or great at all in it, a lot of that having to do with the fact that all the characters are either annoying or cliche and the "humor" is all just the usual perverted 'schoolgirl anime" fare, which I have never enjoyed. Usually I just overlook these kinds of "moe" (GOD I hate that word) shows, but the excessive popularity of this one annoyed me so much that I had to check it out, and I was thoroughly disappointed at such an overrated series. {end rant}
The animation was pretty good though.

I would say the same thing for family guy…i dont see anything funny about it...yet people (like urself) find it funny...
TMOHS is not going to be funny for everyone, since everyone has different taste...but i will just say that the majority of the viewers enjoyed it...
-
Majority ain't always right. Look at Britney Spears' record sales, and the Boy Band craze…
-

well…this isnt music? there has to be a reason for high rates...(the factor in britney spears' record sales, and the boy band craze is probably look/sex appeal? ) ...wait...what do Britney Spears' record sales have anything to do with this
im just talking about majority of the viewers that watched TMOHS on the net...
if u dont enjoy it...u are probably in the minority...it doesnt mean u have bad taste or anything...
(e.g. lets just say the majority is the 75% and 25% is the minority...if u watch it, the probability of u liking TMOHS is 3/4)
there is no right/wrong in opinion based views -
Yay?
Seriously, Haruhi has got to be the most overrated series since Evangelion. Probably even more.
-
This show is all depending on people's opinions.
-
NGE= **Neon Genesis Evangelion?
how is it alike?**
Not in terms of emoness, or the total darkness of it. I'm talking about any scene with Nagato, especially the scene where she's explaining to Kyon that she's an alien and her purpose on earth. It's very remencient of, well Rei Ayanami, and the soliloquies in the last episodes of NGE. The animation anyway seemed like it as well as the mood.
Well the things you gotta remember about TMOHS is that the scenes with Haruhi are the ones intended for comedy, with the exceptions of 2, the one that tells why she acts like she does, and that one scene from Live Alive. Most of the anime seems pretty serious, but then again Gainax is famous for playing the drama card.
I don't see what was wrong with FLCL, unless your one of the people out there where either you thought it was so stupid it seemed as if your brain cells were dying or if you were one of those people out there he really didn't understand what was going on.
As for the cliches you gotta keep in mind that they were intended to be cliches. Again take Nagato for example. She right there is an obvious parody of Rei Ayanami. Ayanami and Nagato are both Japanese Warships and Rei meaning cold while Yuki means snow. Haruhi pretty much explained the whole "moe" concept and you see that's why Asahina was created. As for Koizumi, he's kind of the please ignore me and go about your business kind of guy. As for Kyon, he was sorta new for me, as the guy who somehow ended up as one of the main character even though he didn't want to be a character at all.
As for the comedy half of it is your standard, perverted comedy, yes that's true. The other half is the whole "oh crap" moments and wtf moments.
-
Don't know why people are complaining about use of the word "moe"… it's not like using terms like "loli" is so much better.
I would say the same thing for family guy…i dont see anything funny about it...yet people (like urself) find it funny...
Oooh, sloppy move there.
-
I liked some of the wit in the writing of the first season, but I think that's about all so I can't say I'm overjoyed to hear it's getting milked even more.
90% of it just seemed like shameless pandering to hardcore anime fans, so I'm sure they'll get their kicks out of this but I think I'd rather spend my time going out, talking to people and having sex.
-
honestly does this look boring?
or this
Yes. Wasn't too interesting.
and the fact that that failed to shed any light on what the series was about. Otherwise it was just cliche schoolgirl humor and a "fight scene"(?).
but yea, this might make the list along with FMA and evangelian as one of the most overrated animes. Havent watched so I can't say if it is as bad as those two tho.
but yea, vids definatelt didn't convince me to watch it. I'll continue trudging through the Giant Robo OVA's during my free time instead.
-
Never really liked this show. The "amazingly intelligent plot twist" was more like: "… Uh, okay."
-
And I have yet to hear legitimate justification for the fact that the episodes are grossly out of order, for no reason whatsoever. Seriously… Out of order. Episode 1 isn't epsiode 1. Episode 2 is. And episode 3? Why, that's episode 6!
-

Why did you edit your post?

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaahh, see, whenever I hear something like that about anything, it basically screams "this is incredibly overrated," since something that appeals to EVERYBODY across EVERY genre is pretty much impossible. Those clips looked nice production-value-wise, but the first one wasn't funny at all and the second seemed to repeat itself over and over
Plus, I can't look at the girls' character designs without getting a mental image of a morbidly obese 40-year-old living in his parents' dimly lit basement, chuckling in perverted glee. I find myself having similar reactions to most current anime, actually.
(that isn't a good thing)

Dear folks, you seem to be bashing your heads together and aren't making much sense. Let me try to alleviate your pain.
…
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is popular for the following reasons:
1. Japanese wotaku pop-culture references.
2. Massive fanservice.
3. Pseudo-scientific/pulp philosophy.
4. Good animation/art quality.Basically EVERYTHING that made Eva popular in Japan. That's why it's frequently compared with it.
In terms of story, Haruhi is actually above average thanks to Kyon, but I'm caught up with the novels and it's rather cheesy right now, like in OP with the over-emphasis on "NAKAMAAAA!!".
-
In One Piece's defense, it's the fans who shout "nakama" every waking second that make it intolerable. I'm a staunch supporter of speaking English in English conversations, myself.
Since Haruhi's a pretty short series, I guess I'll watch the first season, just so I'll know what everyone's talking about. The first episode was okay with the whole home movie thing, but it wasn't mind-blowing or anything. And the character designs still make me want to vomit.
-
Evangelion had shitty art quality, but that's because it barely had a budget. People sure as fuck didn't watch Evangelion for the visuals.
-
people nowadays are picky?

'tis not what I meant, I'm referring to the "comeraderie" of OP taking center stage as a permanent under-theme of all the fighting. OP was originally an epic, about one man who stands above all others - now it's "one man and his posse of friends he met yesterday".
@Cyringohn:

When did you see Eva? For it's time the animation quality + art quality were outrageous. Seriously. Gurren-Lagann has bad visuals but incredible animation quality, Eva had the best of both worlds. Until the budget ran dry.
-
Honestly, the comrade theme has a place in OP. When you're on a ship and your life is, mutually, in the hands of others, well… that's how comrades are formed.
It got slightly ridiculous in the last arc, but that's to be expected every once in a while.@Malintex_Terek:

The quality has always been shit. Go back and look at the first box set of DVD's for Evangelion, and you can easily tell how shitty it looks. Cyringohn saw Evangelion a year or two after it first came out, and even then, it looked pretty bad. The animation itself is fluid, but the picture looks extremely grainy.
Evangelion never had much of a "budget", to begin with; Gainax was very uncertain of how well the show would do. It's not like the first 24 episodes were the quality of a Berserk volume, then the final two episodes were a bunch of stick figures wiping their butts with pixels.

Understandable, but still excessive.

Not to my satisfaction.

It doesn't look much different from other shows of that period like Bebop or Triggy. Eva's artwork isn't even "bad" by old tyme standards - how much QUALITY have you seen in recent anime? I need not last ten minutes into any one current episode of OP to find a prime example of it.

Yeah, I can agree the show lacked direction and scope. But the budget was only really taken away when Eva shifted into the dark zone and the sponsors bailed.
It's popularity is more of an accident if anything.
-
@Cyringohn:
Why the fuck does it matter?
It doesn't. Just wanted to know if there was a reason you changed your opinion.
No need to get all defensive over it tho.

Wow, I'll never really understand why people who hate something feel the need to gravitate toward discussion of that which they hate…

because its on a forum that isn't designated for that thing. Thus, you get a variety of opinions.

It's annoying. Anyone who browses Yotsuba knows of Haruhi's endless viral marketing spams, but personally Lucky Star is far, far worse.
Trolling something usually gets the fan's attention…or it makes them even more hardcore.
Case study: Eva.

It's not like discussions are reserved for only positive comments.
