This is a horrible event that seemed to have happened with absolutely no warning ( a used super Nintendo lasted longer) I went on with my usual daily enjoyment of my favorite game "Gears of war" got tired of playing then turned off my system.

A couple of hours later those 3 red lights appear out of the blue almost like Microsoft planned to screw me over.

What do I do now? (Yes I realize this should probably belong in the help section)

Your going to either have to buy a new one or call Microsoft and send it to get fix.

Just call Microsoft Customer Support and just send it to get it fixed or get a new 360 from them.

                  A supposedly 33% failure rate.

                    Use the "towel trick".

Failing that, see if it's still under warranty. If so, call and send it back to Microsoft.

If for some reason they can't fix it, go buy a new one.

At least they are honest 😆. In my case Nintendo's products has been the only game machines which hasn't decided to suddenly stop working for the heck of it. I'm still pissed at Sony.

Things shouldn't break when you've paid a good amount of money for it. Not the way it did at least.

I don't know what the towel trick is and its still under warranty but what I hear is that it takes a long time to actually get the 360 back.

Google "Xbox 260 Towel Trick" and you'll probably find a tutorial. It involves putting a towel over your xbox, and because you don't actually go inside, it's supposed to resolve the issue without voiding the warranty. I don't know the specifics, so don't just throw a towel on top of your xbox and expect it to work, google it first.

                              To our Xbox Community:

You’ve spoken, and we’ve heard you. Good service and a good customer experience are areas of the business that we care deeply about. And frankly, we’ve not been doing a good enough job.

Some of you have expressed frustration with the customer experiences you have had with Xbox 360; frustration with having to return your console for service after receiving the general hardware error message on the console.

The majority of customers who own Xbox 360 consoles have had a terrific experience from their first day, and continue to, day in and day out. But when anyone questions the reliability of our product, or our commitment to our customers, it’s something I take very seriously.

We have been following this issue closely, and with on-going testing have identified several factors that can cause a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights on the console. To address this issue, and as part of our ongoing work, we have already made certain improvements to the console.

We are also implementing some important policy changes intended to keep you in the game, worry-free.

As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge – including shipping -- for three years from the console’s purchase date. We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. In doing so, Microsoft stands behind its products and takes responsibility to ensure that every Xbox 360 console owner continues to have a fantastic gaming experience.

If we have let any of you down in the experience you have had with your Xbox 360, we sincerely apologize. We are taking responsibility and are making these changes to ensure that every Xbox 360 owner continues to have a great experience.

This will take a few days to roll out globally, and I appreciate your continued patience as we launch this program. I’ve posted an FAQ that should address some additional questions, and we’ll update it over the next few days.

I want to thank you, on behalf of all us at Microsoft, for your loyalty._

You can get it fixed for free now.

I remember some guy got the three rings of death for a total of eleven times. Each of them returning in a couple of weeks. But I also hear others that get it after like one month. So yeah, just cross your fingers.

My suggestion … Hit it. Sometimes you just need to put the fear of man into the pesky things. You let it talk you into getting it a buddy and it be that much closer to taking over.

If that doesn't work try threating it with a hammer.

Violence and Xbox 360s do NOT mix. Trust me. Violence will just make the 360 MORE broken.

The xbox has a large FPS audience. And anything on a computer that can be adapted to the control scheme of a console controller.

The Gamecube IS very tough. Other consoles? not so much.

Just send it in, you'll get it back eventually, and it's not like you can use it now. The more you delay it, the longer you go. If you wait a week, then you may end up having played no Xbox games for over a month, send it in now and you could have it back in about 3 weeks. Not nearly as fast as Sony's PS3 services, but it's better than letting it sit there, staring at you with 3 red rings for a week.

Have you see most of the games for the system?

That's violence being played ON the 360, not violence being dealt TO the system.

Send it to Microsoft, and if they can't do anything, you have a few options.
                                                      A. Buy a Nintendo Wii (one of the three systems that are made by the top three game-selling companies, and it is the newest Nintendo system, and Nintendo obviously is the oldest gaming system)
                                                      B. Buy a Playstation 3, I know there expensive, but there pretty good.
                                                      C. Drop 1-3 Nuclear Bombs on the HQ for Microsoft
                                                      D. Get an older system like a Gamecube or PS2, original XBOX or Nintendo DS. You might already have most of them, but they are pretty fun, D really should be a last plan idea though.
                                                      E. Get a new XBOX 360. If it dies that quickly, I wouldn't but its up teo you.

First off I probably wouldn't enjoy the wii.

And another thing I've tried the towel trick and surprisingly it worked, my 360 has been working completely fine for the last couple of days.
