I think this will be a fun topic to look at and discuss.

I love many of the drawings in Vegabond and Berserk. I am still pretty ignorant when it comes to other mangas. I only have read around 12 mangas. They include Flame of Recca, Naruto, One Piece, Gantz, Berserk, Monster, 20th century boys, Jo-jo adventure, dragonball, bleach, kenshin and a few others.

Out of the shonen artist, I have looked at and read. I still think Kishie is one of the most talented artist. His earlier spreads and picture books in part 1 had very good artwork. My current avatar is one of my favorite photos.

Well anyway, post to talk about or show some of your favorite manga drawings, spreads or picture books by manga artist.

Hagiwara and Oh Great! are both absolutely fantastic. Oh Great!'s backgrounds are especially amazing. I also really like Murata Yusuke's stuff.

I'm gonna go with Oh! Great for Air Gear (the 2 pager with the Sleeping Forest is one of my FAVORITE manga pages of all time) and Kubo Tite for insane character design, no matter how generic everyone says they are.

Nobohiro Watsuki (Rurouni Kenshin/Buso Renkin) puts alot of work into drawings. Though I liked the art for Buso Renkin better.

One of my recent favorites is the guy who does Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro. The quality of the art isn't always that great (though it's improved lately), but I really like the style and some of the cover pics he does.

I don't think I've ever read a manga where I thought the art was bad.

I personally am big fans of Kentaro Miura who does Berserk and others who manage to draw incredibly accurate people and it not actually looking ugly. Every time I try and draw detailed people like that they look over done and ugly.

Hmmm… Oda's one of the top ones for me, personally. He does a great job with the "cartoony" style.

Kubo Tite's character designs are really enjoyable. It's a shame that he seems to have an obsession with long-winded arcs taking place in all-white, uniform complexes.

Bo-bobo (especially Shinsetsu) had surprisingly awesome art, very expressive and apt at showing the bizarreness of whatever's going on.

Tetsuo Hara (Hokuto no Ken) and Araki (JoJo) both have very manly, amazing art.

I have read far less Gon than I want to, but what little I've seen of it was very, very impressive. Amazing stuff, unless I got a false impression.

The Eyeshield 21 artist is amazing as well. Look for Strange One's recent posts in the ES21 thread if you want good examples.

Anzai's art in the first half of Flame of Recca was a little rough, but by the final arc it was absolutely GORGEOUS. The cover for the final volume speaks for itself:

Only the 3rd one was a fan coloring.

Others appeared in his art book.

others are actual manga pictures he colored for the art book. I mean the kyuubi and lee pics are basic changes of original manga art, and the zabuza pic I believe was a colored page from jump.

as for other artists I'm a fan of:

as trite and cliche as it sounds to say this on a one piece board: Oda is my favorite.

I also like Ayamine Rando's art in Getbackers.

Ima steal Anzai from carter too. Really enjoyed the later stuff. Not so much in the beginning(Domon, like kuwabara, suffered from uglyasssidekick-itis, in the earlier chapters.)

Kishimoto's earlier works I still enjoy.

They're not fan-colorings, at least the first few images are from the official art book (the first character book I believe, which is a databook).

And "effects" like in the Lee picture are present in the manga often enough, at least earlier on.

And that picture is also by Kishimoto, it's present in the first databook. The second databook also contains some colored panels, so that Zabuza one could've been from one of the few character books, though that might be fan colored.

Hagiwara Kazushi. Shits all over the vast majority of manga artists when it comes to accuracy of the trait and the details he puts in his drawings. The fact he uses CG can alienate some but other than that the quality is amazing.

Kentaro Miura. Doesn't look like a manga actually, more like some epic medieval fresco. I actually think it's even superior to Hagiwara's art because the style is so unique while Hagi's art is basically your typical anime/manga style mastered to perfection.

Oda also gets point for the fact One Piece is a weekly manga and he manages to put an incredible amount of detail into his drawings, and as Carter said honorable mention to Gon as well. edit: and early Gunnm. How could I forget about Kishiro. Brilliant cyberpunk scenery.

You know, somehow I have always enjoyed Hikaru no Go's art more than Death Note's. Anyway, there must have been at least two very similar threads to this one but I couldn't find 'em so… I'm unable to act like a butthole.

I second Yoska's choices with great fury.

And I add my love for Jiro Matsumoto's work (especially in Freesia and Uncivilized Planet) and Yukito Kishiro's early stuff (as in Gunnm when it was still cool). Katsuhiro Otomo's work (Akira) is quality too of course.

There's plenty of others (of course I lurv Oda) but those pop into my head pretty much immediately.

Those two, along with Yusuke Murata and the guy who does Yakitate!! Japan. Plus Oda is a given.

Obata probably wins in the category of detail and realism for just beautiful use of tones and poses, his art is consistently amazing.

Urasawa I am totally in love with for his writing in Monster, not to mention his serious art that while not the best, is great for how quickly he had to produce it… certain poses and expressions are so sweet or eerie, apart from batshit Light/Raito I don't think other artists can match the expressions he puts into characters like Johan or Lunge.

Murata has the style I wish I could reach for- amazing perspective use, line use, great character designs and expressions, he manages to pull of semi-realism with unrealistic character designs beautifully. Plus his color work is geeeeorgeous. I prefer his art to Obata's.

I can't remember the Yakitate guy, but his inking is beautiful and his characters are clean and consistent. He's also developed the ability to draw bread realistically xD

Oda's inking isn't beautiful or consistent but I love his character design, he just gets so insane with people and locales and poses that it makes up for the fact that he's not Obata xD

Obata's details are great, but a lot of his protagonists tend to look heavily rehashed (compare adult Hikaru and Akira to Light and L to that kid from Blue Dragon). I still like his art, just not as fanatically as I used to.

I love the way that Yusuke Murata shows movement; I'd definitely go as far as saying that his smoke and blur effects do a better job depicting motion than the (horrible) Eyeshield anime does. I also adore his color stuff.

Speaking of colored material, Hirohiko Araki tops just about everyone. A lot of his volume covers and posters look like they got sent through a kaleidoscope a couple times. The progression of his art style is amazing, going from crude and ungainly muscular to stylishly masculine to adrogynous and badass at the same time.

I'm sure I could rant for hours over my favorite artists, but those two come to mind the fastest. Oh, even though he's not a mangaka, I love Yoshitaka Amano's illustrations. They look so smooth and fantastical.

Somehow I never really got into a lot of the "superrealistic artists who seem like they are making their life's work when its just a comic". Personally my favorite artists are those that seem to blend in the perfect combination of cartoony-ness and realism. Ones like Takeshi Okano (Hell Teacher Nube), Makoto Raiku (Konjiki no Gash!), Yoshio Sawai (Bo-bobo)…and of course Oda.

Probably my only real exception is Murata...sure ES21 kicks so much butt, but his art just makes it so much more amazing.

BTW: Neuro = Matsui, a former Sawai assistant. (one who did a really creepy pic of Beauty in an early volume)

Guess that came out wrong. Essentially, when I see something with superrealistic art like it came out of a manga version of "Rex Morgan M.D." or Heavy Metal, it just doesn't appeal to me. Yes its beautiful but it doesn't grab me like a just as powerful manga told in a more cartoony style.

There was this one panel he drawed, a chain mail and a sword.. nothing more.. but seeing every detail of it.. i stoped drawing myself a whole week.. i just couldnt believe someone so good is living on this planet… million miles ahead of my skills... his last panels are just pure classic art... he draw this panel of an aristocratic ball... in the left is a picture of an ship.. you can see every detail of it.. and if you look deeper into the room you can see details of every fresco on the ceiling
