I've heard people talk crap about the Enies Lobby arc in the anime, at least on this site, and I fail to see where it is so bad, what's wrong with it? Because most people I talk to on forums liked it. It was amazing to me in the anime.
What exactly do people not like about the Enies Lobby arc?
-
-
Most people don't like it because it was really dragged out (since it's so close to the manga) and that the animation was pretty lackluster.
-
Basically what he said, there was SO much filler during it and it wasn't even good filler… Then the animation quality was very uninspiring and sometimes just straight up awful! Which is sad considering how epic this arc is suppose to be but I guess I can't really talk about it since I only watched a few episodes of it...
-
I liked the Enies Lobby arc, I just didn't like how they dragged it along. Still Enies Lobby's got nothing on Alabasta.
-
Huge five-minute recaps and those recap eppehs.
[insanity]
Every single scene with Spandam beating up Robin made me cry out in agony. One left me wondering afterwards why the hell I love that hawt oversized ferret of love. My sweet, schweet panda, beating her up for no reason other than because he can! And looking like a feesh!!
And how Spandee should still be yiffable after he gets beaten up by Robin and Sogeking.
[/insanity]No flaming meh. I'm joking 'bout some of the Spandam stoof.
Oh, and the infamous "NAMISBOOBSNEEDMOREFLAPSZOMGLOL". That's what Thriller Bark is for, pervehs.
-
Yeah. Basically a lot of very repetitive scenes (Buster call blowing stuff, up, Spandam abusing Robin) where one or two would have done and lots of recapping.
Also, the villains weren't especially interesting or convincing. The way that the combined forces of Cp9 and five vice-admirals completely failed to take down nine fairly powerful pirates (Well, eight plus one puny sniper:P) was just…pathetic, I guess.
Also, in this arc I failed to understand how the World government manages to maintain control over the world, with all the murder and genocide it's dispensing all over the place. If all the marines are doubtful enough to question blowing up a ship with a pirate on it, why would they keep supporting a government who can have them shot just for asking? Surely they would all mutiny or desert like Saulo did?But yes, this didn't particularly get in the way of me enjoying it. Good things, let me see....best moments:
*Usopp showing off his true sniping skills
*Jabura taking the piss out of Kaku
*Anything involving Kokoro and Chimney. Best lines: "If that wave catches us, we'll be drowned". "Yay! Drowning!"
*Chopper fighting Kumadori. I love chopper's fights because unlike Luffy and the rest, he's clearly hating every minute of it...
*In fact, anything involving Kumadori.
*Zoro's swords getting busted. I wanted more of the rust guy.
*In fact, the fight against the 200 captains was fairly awesome generally.
And Many more. It was basically a great arc, marred by the anime company giving us so little actual content in each episode.
-
Most of it's been said already. The big thing is that the arc drug on forever and ever. Huge recaps and some iffy animation. Especially near the end.
But really, that doesn't have to much to do with the Enies Lobby arc as much as just the way it was made. The arc itself is really solid.
-
The fights ran way long. The fights in EL took as long as the entire Arlong arc (in the manga) and probably longer in the anime.
Spandam was a bit one-dimensional… in a funny way, but I never could see the world from his view the way I could with some of the other key villians.
The "strongest man is not the major villian" is a turnaround for OP, but I personally liked it.
They left poor Hattori alone at the end. He did nothing! He doesn't deserve what he got.
-
I really don't see any problems with it myself, the recaps are the only downside to me, the animation really wasn't that awful though, at least by my standards
Actually, though, Lucci pretty much seemed like the main villian of that arc, even though Spandam was his boss, Lucci was the most dangerous

Heso!
I really liked the Enies Lobby arc. I thought that they did a good job with it. I personally prefer if there is going to be filler in a long running anime that it happens inside in places in a manga arc. Arabasta had the first ten or so episodes that had Ace travel with the Strawhats which was all filler.
I really like CP9 so I really liked having more time with them. So I did not mind that they stayed with Enies Lobby as long as they did. For me Enies Lobby is sort of a sentimental favorite because the first episode that I saw was 284. I was also very glad as a first time viewer to be able to have the recap episodes which gave me a chance to meet the rest of the Strawhats while I was finding out about Robin. In short I will always like Enies Lobby in it's anime form as much as the manga form. I mean it may seemed like it took a long time but the Strawhats were doing something no one had been able to do before the fact that it took a long time for the outcome to happen I think showed how much effort it took.
Anyway I really liked the Enies Lobby arc and if the animation was not completely strong it is not completely surprising. It is next to impossible for long running anime to always be animated perfectly for every episode. Two reasons that this happens. One there is not the time for that level of animation and two they don't have that kind of money to do that. If one wants high animation then they need to watch a shorter series that the much of the money goes mainly to the animation like a Gunslinger Girl or a Samurai 7.
In short I thought that Enies Lobby was great. It made me laugh and cry which is what it was supposed to do. Now as to Spandam being a week villian I think not he was terrible person who nearly destroyed Franky and Robin's lives. He brought down Enies Lobby and was the reason that the Strawhats have become even more wanted by the government than before. Also the rest of CP9 members are awesome especially Kaku, Kalifa, and Lucci. I truly hope that all of CP9 at least made it somehow. I am not sure about Spandam but more than likely he has the greater chance at making it than the others. I am not sure how they could have made it out alive but anything is possible with One Piece.

Agreed 100%
I think I saw the arc around the time it was being completed episode-wise, that's probably why I don't think it took forever, if I had seen it as the episodes were being made, it probably would've been a different story for me -
It was the longest and most boring arch ever. I won't ever rewatch it, except for the final episode fights of Zoro, Sanji, and Luffy. The rest was just too freaking boring. One small thing happens an episode. Then you just see the rest of them dance around monolouging and Spandam yelling "baka".
Enis Lobby as a whole was worse then the worst Naruto filler.
But yea, there were some good moments…
-
I personally didn't mind the filler as it was the first arc I've watched cover to cover all the way through, and I thought it was good overall. I admit it did drag out in some parts, but it had good fights. Although the one fight that I liked most was Luffy vs. Lucci.
-
The main reason I didn't like the anime version? Well, when I first got into One Piece, I started watching the episodes and everything, and caught up to the anime in maybe 2 months. I was kind of annoyed that I had to wait a week for the next episode, but that wasn't too bad. What was bad is that the exact episode I caught onto, the four recap fillers started. My god, did this piss me off. After they finally ended, and the Straw Hats finally got their slow asses over to the other side, the arc suddenly became four minutes of openings and endings + 15 minute recap + 5 minutes of something interesting.
I just said "fuck it" and read the manga.
-

The new intro + the Gold Roger clip actually takes up the same amount of time that the openings and endings did combined before. I don't see why people think that they slow the episode down. I can agree with the recaps being WAY too long though, even though they seem to be speeding it up in the latest episodes.
-
Heso!
Last year I watched Bleach a lot and then it went into fillers which lasted an entire year almost. Although I did not watch them I know that Naruto has more filler episodes than manga episodes. I am very happy to have slightly longer OP, Gold Roger intro, recaps, and filler bits inside of the manga material. It keeps the anime closer in spirit to the manga. It also keeps One Piece from suffering from long fillers which can really mess up the strength of an anime. So I like I said I am glad that Enies Lobby used some filler items so that the manga could be extended kind of like how they extended Davy Back and Loguetown. Now I wish that they would animate some of the short side stories that Oda comes up with in the manga like the Coby and Helmeppo and the Little Buggy ones. They could have the Strawhats doing some filler stuff dring the mini arcs. I think that if they chose the right one it would be neat. It might help limit the fillers ang give the fans a chance to catch up with past characters.
-
I loved the Enies Lobby arc but Oda really should've made it into a movie instead of Arabasta arc. That's one reason why I disliked this arc. If any arc was going to be made into a movie, this one should've been it. :(
and the recaps…they were necessary but really just boring.
I can't believe I'm saying this about OP. It's a sign of the apocalypse.
-

Wha…Why?
-
The only major problem I have with it is the pacing. (But in the end, there's probably not much they could have done, so.. I hope they have enough filler to not be annoying, but enough so Thriller Bark and everything after can have decent pacing.
-
Toei. characters
-
From what I remember, most people hated Enies Lobby, because they believe Usopp was misused or that, unlike the others, he never evolved or developed some new super attack. Yeah, that's what I want to see, Usopp developing some superhuman ability to own his enemies (sarcasm detector explodes). Don't they get the idea that Usopp is NOT supposed to be a powerhouse character, like Zoro or Sanji?! Sure, he didn't get to take out a CP9 agent, but he got to show everyone just how great his sniping ability really is!
-
-
I just find quite pointless the "Filler Recaps" that took like four episodes, the rest is kinda decent, and far better than having more fillers later on.
PS: Crocodile15, your Avatar is the best of the site. :O
-
I'm back.
As for the animated version, the recaps were annoyingly long and I just skipped the flashback episodes that occurred after Robin's past was revealed.

Those were about the only downside to me too, I skipped the filler flashbacks too
-
The animations sucked in the anime version and the fights were almost ALL pretty disapointing to me. I dun like any of the new powers aside from Luffy's rly..well i guess Nami and Chopper's are okay too. Ashura, Diable Jambe, and Kabuto were pretty bad IMHO.
Storywise it was fine, except for Usopp not having anything close to a battle victory.
-
The Luffy/Lucci finale was done well, but the episodes prior had absolutely terrible pacing. From the time they entered the Tower of Justice each episode consisted of 3 minutes of opening 2 minutes of Roger crap, and then an additional 10 of recap.
-
I don't know about Asura, but Diable Jamble was pretty cool in my opinion
-
The fights ran way long. The fights in EL took as long as the entire Arlong arc (in the manga) and probably longer in the anime.
Actually, the EL and Alabasta showdown were nearly excactly the same lenght. I jsut think people felt EL "dragged", because, unlike Alabasta, they had to wait for the chapters.
I absolutely loved the manga version, and the Anime was good - but there was definetely room for improvement. The thing that irked me the most was how the Captain fight was handled…No drama at all.
-

What do you mean by the captain fight? Luffy's fight?
-
Nah, I mean the rest of the crew vs. the Marine captains. In the manga, they were surrounded, and attacked violently and relentlessly from all sides at the same time. The Anime changed it to comic relief and One on One fights…and made the captains total jobbers.
-
In the manga, I think Enies Lobby was my favorite arc, tied with Arabasta (which I only saw in the anime, I started reading the manga a while back because I'd caught up with the anime).
In the anime, however, I was really, really disappointed in it. The animation was the worst it's ever been (I totally would prefer the animators from the very first episodes, even) and there was probably about 10 minutes of new content in every 24-minute episode, and then those horrible recap episodes… The pacing wasn't very good, either, and uuugh.
Not to say it was entirely terrible, the fights were animated well and interesting to watch, but god damn, they really could have done a better job with the rest of the arc. Seriously.
I really did enjoy seeing CP9 animated, though. :)
-
I can tell Enies Lobby is just a little sample of what's going to happen later (World Government's little secret that Ohara was destroyed for…), so of course it isn't going to be the greatest... This arc had to show what exactly the World Government is doing behind everyone's back, so we will continue reading, wondering what is going on, and when the final oart of the World Government comes, it will be a lot more clear.
-
5-minute recaps are a SERIOUS problem in shonen manga adaptations these days.
-
My friends say they don't like Enies Lobby Arc because it reminds them too much of DBZ and it makes them feel as if Oda lost his creativity.

How so? The only thing I can think of is that CP9 can all fly, kind of…and the fact that it's essentially violence from start to finish (Which I can readily forgive, as it acts as a sort of finale to the Water 7 arc beforehand, featuring the same villains).
Also, rewatching a few episodes, I now realise how perfect it would have been if Spandam and Usopp had faced off properly at some point-- not to say that Spandam getting his ass exploded was not very satisfying– but a battle between two pathetic weaklings who are also tactical geniuses, both with cool weapons, would be an interesting change from this arc that focuses so much on raw power. Also, we'd get to see more Funkfreed, which couldn't be bad. An elephant sword is my favourite of Oda's many bizarre inventions, after the Impact Dial...
-
I could understand why someone would think that the Zoro and Luffy fights are going the way of DBZ. But it's just the nature of the beast considering how far they've gotten at this point. That's why I wish Oda is at least somewhat close to wrapping up the story. He's getting to that dangerous ground now were the characters are getting too powerful.
But seriously, you can't tell me Oda's losing his originality when he's still coming up with wonderfully bizarre and charismatic characters like Kaku. And the way that he's going with something completely different in current arc tells me that he knows what he's doing. He's still putting a lot of heart into his work.

I personally loved the arc. It was my favorite but from my friends views, they said a lot of things were taken from DBZ like:
Luffy going Gear 2 which supposedly copies Kaoken Goku
The fast punching and the flying along with Lucci's Tobu Shigan -
Every shonen anime rips off the kaio-ken. Naruto did it, YYH did it… You'd think the editors would notice by now that it makes the characters look like they're taking a dump. What kind of message is that to send to the kids?
-
For me this is how I like Enies Lobby.
Everything from when they arrive up through the Strawhats facing off CP9 on the tower was handled well (previous to the five flashbacks).
They really, really, reallllllllly dragged out everything post-the time slot change and it made a lot of the fights and scenarios that were key in the manga seem dumbed down or it just did not have the same impact. I will have to admit though I experienced the same issues in Alabasta and Skypeia but on a much smaller scale.
As far as animation goes I have to agree that while the art is better, stylistically the animation kinda lost "something" since it's upgrade in the G8 arc and it wasn't too noticeble until they did this arc. Mostly it was off-model and cutting corner issues.
I really was thinking the One Piece anime was losing it's touch until around the Kokoro/mermaid part where each episode gradually improved and by the time the Going Merry farewell episode happened I realized the anime managed to get back on track.
But to be truthful this is nothing new from Toei. If you're a DBZ fan just compare the Namek/Freiza arc anime to the manga and you run across the exact same problems: inconsistent animation, dragged out plot points and fights, some things losing impact compared to the manga, middle part of the arc really dragged on forever.
Usually for every dragged out arc they do the next one is usually an improvement.
O-chan

I guess I wouldn't notice any similarities to other Shounen because One Piece is the only Shounen that I don't find utterly intolerable…
-
Hey! I did like this except the animation… This IS One Piece, ya know :p It is fun :D And the charachters are.. hmm.. too genuin not to be adored XD Like the cirkus/zoo thing with CP9 XD Or the door fruitXD
-
Nothing against the recaps and the opening with almost 3min. The anime is almost catching the manga, so is just normal things like this happens.
But I'm not a big fan of Enies Lobby arc even in manga. Is just too much centered in fights. Too "shonen" 'know?
And the CP9, at first, made me think Oda was loosing his touch for bizarre. Everyone so serious and beautiful (well, Blueno was not beautiful).
THen, Wanze appeared. Then Kumadori and Fukurou… Kaku and Kalifa gained humor, the boring Blueno was quickly taken away. I was relieved :)
But still, just too centered in fights (and all 1x1. Not to mention how ALL Mugiwara won. That was just too much!). And Thriller Bark seems to be doing the same now with everyone (at least Skypiea had those 1x1 fights but with a different feeling that I liked) :(Not as bad as Skypiea's arc (to me, 100000 points for introducing Enel, -9999999 for Conis and the other guys - except Wiper), but not as good as Alabasta (at least it started pretty good with the Long Island... man, I LOVE Tonjit).
-
I'm not worried about the strawhats being too powerful. The world is vast and they have a lot of pirates and marines who are of equal level and much stronger too. Don't forget the Yonkou and Blackbeard. They're insanely strong and could have probably taken care of Lucci in 5 seconds flat. Besides, fights aren't what One Piece is all about. No matter how strong they get, their personalities wills till essentially be the same so we get the same humor^^
-
I personally have never cared about animation style when it comes to OP. We can all agree it is not the best, but it's not the worst either.
Now, I love this arc and it's still currently my favorite, but here's my one complaint:
This arc borrows more ideas from DBZ than any other arc. This Rokushiki is a mixture of various DBZ elements and the whole power level thing was kinda pointless and also reminded me of DBZ.
"What does Fukurou's senses say about Lucci's power level?"
"It's over 9000!"
-
Well, Oda does like DBZ after all… In fact, there was this one special with Goku and Luffy VS Enel...
Anyway, hopefully this DBZ thing was a once in the series kinda thing... It would suck if One Piece became Naruto and Bleach (DBZ v.2)
-
That was just there to show how the Enies Lobby CP9 compared to the Water 7 CP9, physical-strength-wise.
I didn't like how half the time the animation was just a slideshow of crudely copied manga panels.
-
I never cared for the animation, I pay more attention to the story and voices (There was one episode that caught my attention… I think it was before Merry's death, where the Animation was just AWFUL with capitals... But that's it...), so I didn't pay attention to that in the Anime... I must admit, Enies Lobby was pretty weird at times, but it had it's good moments... Like the scene they burned the flag, Luffy VS Lucci, the finishing attacks, the out of character Zoro scene, and the other funny scenes.
-
Anyway, hopefully this DBZ thing was a once in the series kinda thing
Considering how the current arc is playing out, that seems to be the case
Another thing in Enies Lobby that may have been inspired by Dragonball is that Chopper's "Monster Point" could be a nod to Kid Goku and Gohan's involuntary ape transformations.
I honestly didn't mind any of the Dragonball-esque elements in Enies Lobby. As long as they keep DB's "ki energy" outside One Piece, and keep fights at a reasonable length (which hasn't been a problem thus far).
-
I didn't like how half the time the animation was just a slideshow of crudely copied manga panels.
ummm, aren't they supposed to copy panels from the manga?
